Hello. My question is when do warships decide to ping.
I've downloaded GWX 2.0 and very impressed.
Decided to take a shortcut through the Straights of Dover From Keil. Its Jan 1940 and am in a VIIB.
Sea's are calm and it is dark.A large merchant came sailing by so decided to sink it.To make the story short I ended up with 3 ships behind me trying to find me and I was heading for another 2 that were coming towards me.Hopefully to discuise my sound with there's.I know 1 was an ASW Trawler because I tried to sink it.Another 2 dropped depth charges around my original position so I assume the were destroyers. The thing is I wasn't pinged once.I was at periscope depth at 2 kts because there's meant to mine's through the straight. So do they ping only when they get a hydrophone contact or what.

They do ping. Chances are, they were pinging away from you, so you didn't hear those sound waves bounce off your hull. Trust me, if they know where you are, you <will> get pinged.

It sounds like ping... ping.... ping-ping-PING-PING-PING....... sound of propellers, some splashes, then you are dead. In shallow water that is

Hello Jack, welcome to the Forum.

I am not sure of the answer, but it may be just if they suspect something is down there, or you give away your position(Such as leaving your periscope up, or not going less than 3 knots).

But I must say, you have got some balls to go through the Channel my friend. I'm not sure how long you've been playing SH3, but you will learn fast that going through the English Channel is suicide, unless you have become a skilled Kaleun. I've been playing for 1 1/2 yrs, and I won't go near the place. Scapa Flow and Lock Ewe is like Disneyland compared to the Channel.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay here at Silent Hunter Forums. If you dare to venture the Channel again, please post some screenies and maybe enter the Monthly Screenshot Comp http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Perhaps you should read....The story about Ping! (http://www.amazon.com/Story-About-Ping-Marjorie-Flack/dp/0140502416)

(They just start pinging whenever you are detected by their hydrophones or through sight ) :P

I have the ping from the SH3 data / sound files as my 'message received' ringtone on my mobile - you get some odd looks when it goes off in your pocket when you in a shop! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You're not the only one RJ http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I had to remove it in the end as I was always worrying when the DC's would explode http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Now it's the Spitfire flyby you posted a while ago - and that does get odd looks http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

If they suspect you are there, they will ping. If they don't know you are there, they'll just keep going.
In stormy, rough weather, or going at full tilt, they can't ping.
If they are heading at you then slow down, you will hear the pings, and as mentioned, you will know if they get a bead on you.
If, however, there are three or more - they will work as a team. One will remain stationary, whilst the others bound about in figure eights over you, belting the stuffings out of you.

It's not a matter of if they will get you, it is when........

RJ and Goose, you guys got me wondering. I'll try that too. I decided a while ago that it would look dumb, but it doesn't hurt to try. Just remind me to turn it to silent during a lecture http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
