Woot found one in a Convoy leaving gibraltar its December 41, The rest of the convoy is all C2s and T3/2s and troop transports, less small and costal merchents than per usual... And all the ships are Brits.... and the weather?
FOG NONE, CLOUDS NONE, PRECIPITATIONS NONE. 0m WINDS!!! oh and I have not used up any ammo or torps at all yet!

The bad new is it has six, yes SIX escorts, either DD or Corvette http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Looks like im gonna have tput up a fight or go seriously steathly to get my tonnage....

Im in an IXB so I got plenty of fish, what do recon I should do go for the escorts first, or avoid them?

Im at my G/fs house now, about to have a romantic dinner and wine http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif and all i can think about is sinking this Liner and convoy when I go home on monday Im such a sad b@stard....heheh
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif but I am what I am....

Ooh! I'm playing in Novemberish '41... guess I'm going to Gibraltar for the hols. Personally, I'd take a shot at the escorts then lay low/reload and catch up later in a leisurely manner... I mean, where's that big-*** Liner gonna' hide?

Tip: If you want your romantic dinner to be a huge success just wait until the wine has been opened and then take the time to tell her all about Liners, Escorts, u-boat strategies, torpedo firing solutions, etc etc etc... she will be so fascinated that she will want to come back to your house and cheer you on to victory - right after desert!

I got one back in '40, alas it was an American Neutral liner. Still hit her where it hurt and down she went with one torpedo.

lets see, sank that and various other ships( 8 total) got back to port with a negative of 150 points renown for that patrol LMAO!! Still its a great feeling getting that big ol liner!!!!!

Nice to see you have a passenger liner ready to depart this world!!

This is what I normally do when going for a convoy like this and it works 99% of the time!! I like to get into the convoy - nice and close!
I will note your target priorities depend on the convoy dispostion - i.e. where the ships are in relation to each other.

Normally my target priority is as follows

1. Liners (if present)
2. Tankers (both types)
3. Troop Transports
4. C3 & C2 Cargo
5. Anything else worth going for

If you can ignore the escorts if possible, and only if you have a favourable attack position on the merchant shipping. At this point you will need to manuover on slow speads and rigged for silent running whilst on the approach to target - at this stage you do not want to spook the escorts!!

2. If the Liner is at the front go for it first with 2 torps on magnetic pistol approx .5m below draft height or 1m in rough weather (the idea is to make the torpedo explosion force the ship out of the water - which breaks things inside the ship when it lands) and a narrow spread aimed at the centre of mass.

It appears that the ship does not sink straight away - I guess a ship that size needs alot of water to sink it. But be prepared to pump another torp into it as and when required.

3. If and postion dictates go for the T/2 & T/3 tankers second (if not do these first whilst waiting for the liner to come to you!) - again the same principle as before - magnetc pistol set for 0.5m below the ship, aim for the centre of mass and shoot 1 torp at each ship.

I normally prioritise for larger & heavier ships first, again the convoy layout dictates, so I guess if you have any torps left go for the troop transport - you may need 2 for this.

Then if all goes well and all available torps are expended - crash dive ASAP!! I have managed to dive the IXB to 207 meters then I started to get hull damage!! So I decided to go up a little.

The Allied counter attack really depends on how stealthy you are at all times and how aggressive they are - I had all my Liner sinkings in 1940 in the AM51 and AM52 areas only on one occasion did I get DC'ed but was a token effort by His Majesty's Navy but enough to get me sweating and tense!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif if only briefly!!

I hope this helps if any - please let us know how you tackled this target!

Good luck and happy hunting! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Avoid the escorts and try to sink the Liner by slamming 1 or 2 torpedoes in its fuel bunker or engine room.
The go for the Tankers.
By now I bet the escorts are pinging the hell out of the ocean say if you have a good shot at 1 take it.
Let them know that they too can die. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

The first liner I came across was a neutral liner. I sank it anyway. I figured if you need an armed escort on your pleasure cruise, you shouldn't be where you are and deserve whatever happens to you.

Set-up your attack well. All four forward torpedoes should be assigned to the liner. Ignore escorts. Go in silent, at creep speed, at night, submerged.

Either fire a spread of 4 at the from ~90 AOB, or, fire a spread of two, then two single shots, each one aimed beneath a funnel. If your running 100% realism, get the data exact. Make sure it is correct. Send a sighting message to BdU, then check the message you sent, that will give you convoy course and speed i.e Liner course and speed. Best to attack at night, daylight can make it easier to see your scope. If you have a big boat, then I suggest you attack once, fire 4 torps and then dive deep and creep away. If the liner isn't sunk, it may be stopped dead. If not, end around and try again..

I fired a spread of 4 fish at a liner in a convoy 1941. I got three hits at 4m and one dud. It was a quick shot at close range in a rain squall and I had no time to adjust the depth. The liner didn't sink and I was forced to evade DDs for the next 30 minutes. I tried to chase the wounded beast down later with no luck. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

One torp, right behind the aft smokestack at 10m will kill it.

Then use the other 3 on the troop transports, those have next highest renown after passenger liners.

Well... I sunk the whole lot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif But i gotta tell ya I loaded up twice and my realism setting are only on about forty something percent.
Im bumping realsim up as I play more...

There turned out to be a total of 8 escorts (1 Tribal, 2 Black swan and the rest were flowers.)

I didnt have much trouble sinking them, I attacked at night so they had trouble spotting my periscope and torpeedo wakes.
It was a chain-reaction case of, once i attacked one escort, the one nearest to it came to look for me, but ..er.. in a straight line, none of them zigzaged at all, make them pretty easy kills. I guess they were all novice.

After the escorts were sunk, I did my usual, plotting a course to move away to 5000m from convoy then surface and ahead flank to over take them, while recharging batteries and reloading externals.
Im glad I upgraded my IXBs engine, I can now burn out at 22 knots while surfaced. crash dives are much faster too http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I snuck back in to the convoy at dawn and hit both troop transports and the liner all within 1000m, after that I surfaced and sunk a T3, T2 and some coastal merchents with the deck gun at very close quaters, Finally I used up my remaining torps on the C2s and C3s that remained. I even had 2 torps left after I was done.

I took a couple of hits from the Troop transports ealier and got attacked by hurricanes
which i crash dived to avoid, Returnd to st nazaire with 2 torps left 93%hull integrity and a whopping 12k of tonnage. I wanted to use up my last 2 torps, but fuel was running low.

Easily my best patrol so far.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

and by 12k i hope you mean 120k, for a passenger liner is 24k.

Sounds good, making me envious, i wanna go play now but i had to start my campaign over, and its really slow getting a good crew all over again.
