It's a 109 E with a cut down fuselage and an air cooled engine?!!

What is it?

cheers,

Looks almost like a FW190 with 109 undercarrage and new cockpit and motor...

Testbed of some kind maybe?

109 V-21
For an experiment and to get the first basically datas about installing a twin radial engine in the "Bf 109", the RLM instructed the Messerschmitt construction team, to fit the american Pratt&Whitney "Twin Wasp" twin radial engine to a "Bf 109 E". This engine was chosen, because there was still no german twin radial engine. The plane with the serial number 1770 was called "V-21" and got the marking "D-IFKQ". Later, after transfered to DSF, it got the military marking KB + II. It was only used for test and measure flights.

You are right, it is the V21

But the big engine disturbed the airflow over the wing, and handling was bad. Pity there are no performancecharts, or at least I never heard about this.
I think stabilty was also reduced because of the different canopy hood.

X-0 (1940)
The second radial engined 109 was a modified F-1 airframe, fitted with a fuselage similar to the V-21 with the BMW 139 engine. The Me-109X used the BMW 801 however. The aircraft flew in September 1940 and was tested by the RLM. The RLM decided however that the FW-190 was performing well and that there was no need for a similar powered fighter. Therefore the program was ended in 1941.

I think the 109X looks better, definatly needed a bigger rudder

That is one ugly 109.

Looks a bit like the Ki-100 or Ki-84. Probably because of the big radial, small fuselage, and cut down canopy. Similar requirements produce similar designs http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Never knew there was a radial engined 109...interesting!

There was also a jet power Bf109 called the Bf109TL
