Hi everyone,

Over the past year and a half we are aware that many of you have made great friends with other members of the community. We have also read, from time to time, lots of stories about how the community have helped each other. We would like to get as many of those stories as possible into this thread.

We would like to hear any community stories you have about:

- How members of the IL-2 community have helped you offline.

- Meeting other IL-2 pilots offline in the real world.

- How members of the IL-2 community have helped you online (for IL-2 or anything else)

- Any other interesting stories that have occured as a direct result of your participation in the community.

Of course, please don't post any personal information in the forums (use pseudos only when referencing people)

Back when off-topic discussions were allowed, D4FS4 (seen him lately?) suggested that we go grab a scale model of our favorite plane(s) and paint them like our online paintscheme, then stick them on top of our monitor. Over a year later, I've become an avid scale modeler (never did one before D4FS4's suggestion) and have a nice growing collection including a Spitfire, BF109, FW190, IL2, JU88, P40, P47, Nieuport, and upcoming Typhoon, another Spit, another BF109, and an Albatros.

I also made friends with a group that eventually conned me into their ranks promising women and free booze - The BlitzPigs. While I recently left the Pigs since the women and booze weren't there at all, I made friends with a great group of ladies and gents (most of them ladies pretending to be gents), and have spent a lot of online hours hanging out and flying with them.

And then there was the phase I went through where I impersonated people on this forum, leading to eventual [multiple] bannings. Such characters included "Schtormin", Antanus, and of course my long and enjoyable reign as KnockKnocker, which I utilized PCAnywhere client terminals and got friends all over North America to post for me so as to ensure I'd never get caught through IP tracing the mods (VEN? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif ) were scratching their heads doing.... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

And then there was the FREE STREAK campaign, the PAOE forum invasion, reading Corpse Tea's "Stop the Turkey Holocaust" anti-Thanksgiving visions, and so many other things...

When all is said and done, it's the community here that kept me interested in IL2 and FB. The game is great but it's the people that make it so worthwhile. Too bad we can't talk about other things in here any more since it's now very sterile IMO compared to the rich environment it used to be...

In the beginning there was The Game
And the forum.
Errors were few,
And moderation was light.

And the people came.
They discussed The Game.
And they found out that they had The Game in common.
And the light was on the forum,
As The Game smiled upon it.

And then came the discussions.
And the arguments.
And the topics of the forum diverged from The Game.
"An Off-Topic forum you shall have", spoke the leader.
And and off-topic forum the leader granted.
And so existed The Game and its forums.

But then, the ignorance came.
The politics and the dislike
From half-cocked philosophers
And the leader left, leaving only his disciples behind.
But the disciples were powerless against the ignorance,
Bound by rules that made no sense.
And one by one, the people left.
And the off-topic forum was reclaimed by the earth.

And all that was left was a hollow shell,
A place where only asinine discussions
Of drag coefficients
And manifold pressure
And flight models was allowed.
But only when the errors allowed it.
And the community left.
Diverged to find new homes.
And new games.
And The Game was sad.

S!,

When I first got IL2, I was (and remain) a computer Dunce. Michapma spent alot of time off the forum helping me get the patches installed (told u I was dumb). After a fair few ever more detailed emails, we got it sorted.

We flew several DFs together as he then spent time helping me with my flying.

Then, by chance, we both applied for and were accepted into the same squadron within days of each other.

Thanks Mike. for all the help. Love flying with ya....

Last winter I was three months into a headache that wouldn't go away. FInally went in and got scans and the like done. All negative, they suspected something called COWS (don't ask). The Doc said to avoid all stresses and to remain still and quiet for a long time. The state of the forum at the time was upsetting so I removed myself from the community and said farewell and why, and turned off the computer. Some time went by and the Doc said everything was inconclusive, so I got back online and some one pm'd me and directed me to a lengthy thread from the folks in the community, asshats and everyone, wishing me well. It was burried in the past by the time I came back, but I was directed to it and it was swell

One time I told everyone to use their trim on a slider. It really is a great feeling to have total control of the airplane. But some forum members were too lazy to use it and freaked out and barraged Oleg with PM's. So when Forgotten Battles came out trim was ruined for everyone. The only thing left to do was duct tape it so instant "bat turns" (as some forum members refer to it...I just call it the hardest turn possible) are still possible. Strangely, nobody seems to care anymore. I consider this the oddest turn of events in the history of flight sims.

I never visited forums before FB...well except the dating kinds but that lasted one try and it was quits for me/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

You see I was supposed to meet this chick in front of Macy's in NYC.Well when she finally shows up she is about 150 pounds bigger than what she had told me/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ...go figure...it was horrible...here I am standing with a brown leather jacket and blue carpenter pants with a newspaper held all the way up in front of my face. She comes up to me and asks if I was "Da Wolf" and I said nope you got the wrong guy and she just looks at me knowing I was who she was looking for...It was horrible and I never did that again.

Until this forum that is...some chick PM's me that she lives near me and wants to meet.I think "holy cow a chick into FB"/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif then my better judgement hits me across the face like a 2by4 and I realize that RBJ in drag could well show up/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I first let him borrow MSCFS2 then after he like that I got him hooked on IL2. After that we both got FB the week it came out.

We've been friends now for a couple of years and we hook up to fly DF's or I build campaigns for us to fly as an online coop.

The PL was one of the things that attacted me to these forums. I was a diehard CFS man till I got IL2. These forums helped me to get more into the sim and find out just how great it is/was. My first time online I went into a server that was FR and of course i just flew around for about 15 minutes..couldnt find anybody..nobody found me. Then I went to another servewr where I met Redwulf_1. He turned me on to the La5 since I could barely get off the ground in my Yak9 and when I did I would stall out and crash at the onset of any type of EM. He helped me to get through that initial online adjustment period because there is a definite difference between the online & offline FM. Over the past few months I have come to see a lot of folks come and go..seen a lot of jerks and met some really interesting characters. My buddy Jug Jock who used to fly in CFS with me was the only person who came over here with me from CFS. I met Painter on email.... I saw a post of his and I had noticed there were no Redtail paint schemes.. so I emailed him and asked him if he would be able to make s few for me and he hooked me up with La & 39 skins in all four 332nd FG squadrons in OD & silver. What a guy!!!! I was impressed and those two initial positive experiences kept me coming back. Now I couldnt stay away too long if I wanted to. Although I do miss the interesting discussions in the PL, it wasnt all flames and bulging egoes. There were actually some very good discussions there. It's funny too... although some of the old PL trolls are still here a lot of them arent.
I liked the fact that any question you had could be brought here and you would have an answer in about an hour 9 times out of 10. I met loco-s ...... he sent me an book about the Tuskeegee Airmen that he got at a garage sale and some other neat stuff!! Lots of relly great folks here. People from all walks, all faiths, all ages, all nations, all perspectives. Even though it has gotten a little boring for lack ofg a better term since the PL has been shut down it is still worth the time and effort to come here.

Welcome to the forums newbie! Your statement is "off-base" (incorrect and based on a wrong assumption to boot).

Everybody freaked out over fast trim (once they realized what they had been missing for the last 4 years in combat flight sims). Anybody could just assign it to their slider though. Then, when they slowed it down and ruined the responsiveness for everyone and made it so only the REAL exploiters could still do the feared "bat turns at will", all the sudden it's a non-issue. Threads about it in Oleg's ready room mysteriously get locked.

UFO's do not exist, says the military. And any pilot who leaks information about them will be punished.

I remember my first lock. It was in Olegs RR. Dunno the post but I PM:d all the other mods for an hour to see if it was OK.
Then I did it, I clicked lock. And ever since then I'm desperately looking to get my 5 locks a day that I need. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I also remember the weekend when PL exploded. I was on 24/7 watch in there. Talk about OD. I've must have had 5 browsers up and 3 notepad (for copying text and account info) and the PM, alt+tabing back and forth.
Friday started out somewhat cool but one could sense the underlaying heat. Saturday at US-logon time it all exploded.
Each time I refreshed I had a new PM telling me how I sucked for locking this and deleting that or to direct me to a new inflamed post.

On a lighter note, I've actually met with two squadmates - one in Paris/France and the other Ottawa/Canada.

How COOL it is to be a moderator /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

anyways, This is the first forum I'm hooked to. I joined right after the release of Il-2 (not FB) and still visiting these boards! (PL rarely)

We had fun (the latest pic from Oleg from E3) and we had sadness, like the 'renegade' member from our squad who gave some ppl hate-mail because luthier gave the Fokker D.XXI project to R_Mutt.

anyways, Il-2 made me even join a squad! and I've met some of the members.

Ear's Brief History of the Forums:

I went thru a long period of lurking before I started posting here, and the first thing I can remember from this period was the time when Arklight kept insisting the HD wasn't really in the Navy, didn't know anything about aircraft, and so on...

Then, around the time I started posting, I remember some huge feud between several long-standing members of the sim community - I think it was Chimp, Taz, Liliya23, johnny_c and a few others - and this feud took place not only here, but on most other sim ofrums as well. This, I believe, was all due to the whole CFS3 vs. Il-2 thing. Lovely how that turned out, isn't it? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Before there were the Pigs, there were the Post-wh0res. I remember when that started. It all began when Sparky2001
started a thread called "Completely Worthless, Pointless Thread". I think the original post involved him simply complaining about the weather. It grew to thousands of pages, and established a lot of traditions that were carried over into the Lounge - the chief of which being the "cherry picking" game.

Then came the Lounge, the Pigs, the Trolls, and the War. The history of this is too complicated for me to go into right now. I'll just say one thing: in my opinion, the Lounge failed because people took it too seriously and actually got angry over things that were said there. If everyone, right or left, simply realized that you aren't going to convince the other side of anything, no matter what you say then it probably wouldn't have gone down in flames.

I've only ever met one forum-geek in real life, and that was oZFo. It was in Amsterdam, we drank, we smoked, we drank, we smoked, and then we wandered all over the goddam city center looking for a place to p1ss.

Now the Lounge is gone, The Pig forum is down, and I don't know why. There's still some sense of community on the Ubi boreds, but it has a very oppressed feeling. There's a sense that Ubi doesn't care, and doesn't like us. Which is ok, because I don't really like Ubi either, to be perfectly honest (nothing really to do with you, Cartrix, I simply feel that Ubi puts out more bad games than good ones, and isn't so hot in the customer service area). I guess its sort of a sad ending, but I'm content to keep posting here every once in while regardless.

Be seeing you.

S!

Interesting Topic for disscussion, nice for a change, Well here's my lil contribution.

I'd been a part of The Wedge Tailed Eagles for a couple of years and part of another online group before that which many of the original WTE member were from.

We all pretty much knew each other from years og gaming in various forms and genre's. WTE was like many groups looking for a flight or space sim that would enable us to form a squadron.

We had some catching up to do and myself and my housemate were in the habit of purchasing between us any and every flight/space sim we could get our hands on.

Myself I flew off and on on the Warbirds servers and at the time (it being pay to play) I longed for a WWII Flight sim that was at least as good as WB but could be flown free on prsonal servers. For a couple of months we flew CFS2 which some didn't mind but myself having flown in what at the time i considered the best FM known to man (warbirds) I found CFS2 quite lacking. But it was a start for 2nd Talon Squadron the WTE Flight Sim group.

(we also have fps,rts and rpg units you see..)

Unbenounst to me I had a copy of the First IL2 Demo on a CD i had aquired from a gaming magazine. I checked out the IL2 Demo in a cursery fashion and never got past the front end, I guess i was conditioned by big bill and cfs2 but i never looked at it after loading it once.

Then my XO of the day begged me to have a proper look at it so I did, and as soon as I got into the cockpit i was converted. So i looked deeper and that xmas my housemate Nighthawk (CO of WTE) bought me IL2 Sturmovik for christmas. Santa-hawk's gift was perfect timing as by now i was hooked on the Demo.

Over the next few months there were about 8 or so of us who were playing cfs2 and we all went and got IL2. We were thrilled by the game and the Squadron settled into IL2 and tackled the tuff learning curve. Some fell by the wayside but most of us made it through. We found Hyperlobby early and had even started to grow.

Around Febuary that next year we had WTE Conference, a seven day LAN that runs 24/7 which we hold here in Canberra (capitol of Australia.) people come from across the country to attend and we all have a blast. IL2 featured well at conference and we havent looked back since.

The patches, the support the community input and quality control of this game was unheard of in a world where half made games getting released by corperate entities then gamers being used as testers and 1 patch later the company dumps the game had become the norm.

Maddox and Co. were the opposite. A breath of fresh air into the community. Right then I figured IL2 was going to ressurect what for all appearances seemed to be a dead genre of gaming.

We have grown since, and many of us have met. voice comms gives us a closness as a unit we never knew before a comradere of sorts. We have had dealings and contact with a few other Aussie Squads and overall they seem a good bunch of fella's.

For me gaving founded a squadron thats grown to a wing is most rewarding and it's always good to know ive a bunch of mates i can always fly with.

it's also rewarding to see many of our members learn and grow to love the game, and learn new skills both in game and out.

For me FB and gaming in general is about more than just competing, it's the fullfillment of achieving goals as a team that feeds my spirit. Good gaming fulfills dreams that might otherwise be left unfulfilled.

Ohh and cause we kick @$$ /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

hello Earwicker, nice to see you're still around!

like you, i really got into the forum with the appearance of the dear old Completely Pointless Worthless Thread. (sigh)

a lot of long term contacts were formed in that seemingly pointless monster, and a lot Il2/FB support originated there. the community FAQ wouldn't exist if not for the CPWT. neither would the BlitzPigs (albeit some might consider that a blessing)

i remember posting, a long time ago and in a drunken stupor, after i had broken up with my last girlfriend, a thread with the title 'you can all go to hell and this forum sucks cuz i just got dumped' (or something to that extent)
once i was in shape again to check the forum i couldn't believe how many people actually responded - and in a supportive way at that! that's when i realized that forums are not just about flaming and trolling - duh!

cartrix, this thread is confusing to me - it's obviously off topic and you of all people started it? what is this about?

Most of the 'Community Stories' were spawned in the late Pilots Lounge. You get a better feel for other people over the intarweb when your conversation isn't reduced to discussing climb rates for the bf109K4 or the ROF of a ShVak cannon.

I've met 3 people from the Lounge and expect and hope to meet them again, I've also been in email contact with a few people, hosting pics and things like that.

Last weekend I was with Mr & Mrs falcons_jooster in Brussels. We were discussing buying a property which would become the Eurotroll HQ /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
Jooster and I have traipsed around some of the old WW1 Western Front battlefields over the last year or so, I'd like to post the pics here, but it would be 'off-topic' and then locked - which is pathetic.

I've met nicolas10 once, and I hope to see him again when I'm working in Paris in a couple of weeks. We'll be discussing how to finish global capitalism once and for all /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I've met oFZo twice, and seeing as I can fly to Eindhoven for about 25 return, I expect to be going to the Netherlands again in the future - no visit to that country is complete without a smoke & a drink with him.

There's other people I'd like to meet from here (I won't mention them because they might not want to meet me /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif ) but the point is, I personally dont feel any sense of 'community' here since the end of the PL. It just seems like it became just too much effort for UBI and they've washed their hands of a lot of people here. That's their choice and they've made it abundantly clear that it won't change, but this thread only serves to draw attention to this fact.

Being a german, I always felt more like a "visitor" or a "guest" on these boards, what of course is nonsense, but has its reasons in the fact that we germans have our "home base" on the german Ubi-boards.

Only very few of us are trolling around here. Language-barrier might be the main reason, but then again its more likely to find us arguing in the ORR (due to the fact that the ORR still has the reputation of being more "serious" than the GD) or even fighting in the online-skies.

For me personally it was always (and still is) a challenge to visit these forums, just because I found it amazing to meet all these WW2-fighter enthusiasts from all parts of the world, including those who were the "ancient enemies".
I never experienced that before. It opened my mind very much.

I was never a strong part of the PL-history. I lurked und read there, but refused in posting, just because I found my language-skills not good enough to go through the dephts of a serious discussion, and in a lot of jokes I was always afraid to miss the point. But even in the darkest days of the PL I had a profit in trying to understand the "other side`s point of view". That didn`t change my opinions, but helped a lot in being more tolerant.

A very good example for what I am talking about are the Blitz-Pigs. My first experiences with them were more like a car crash. They seemed to represent everything of what I understood under "the ugly american": loud, arrogant, ignorant, over-patriotic and obviously not willing to accept another opinion than theirselves. And I was banned by one of them. But then again this couldn`t be the whole story. One of the nicest persons I had (and have) contact to from this forum is a BP (Hi Harryw). This lead to a "BP-Thread" in the german forums about a year ago (what had never happened before), where some of them jumped in. It lead to a nice discussion, ending in harmony. Unbelieveable. After some further "issues" I took all my courage together and visited the sty. Allthough known there as a "troublemaker" they helped me with my account and welcomed me. It wasn`t necessary to change any of my opinions, the only thing I had to understand was the deeper sense of the word "asshat".

Take this only as a small example in whitch way I had a "profit" from these boards. There are further more.

That all would never had happened on a board were only topics like "engine management" were allowed.

I have a wider view than I had before. Thanks to everybody who helped or took part.

Here's mine:

Some weeks ago I posted some pics of the BF 109 my grandfather flew in WW2. I had absolutely no idea where the pics were taken, apart from a few hints. No solid lead though.

I posted them over in the german forum first, left a link in GD so you guys could have the chance to see them as well, if you are interested.
Now here is the cool part: Within a day I had 3 offers to do the skin for me (R-Mutt, Dusty61 and Malolo) a link to the
JG 52 Heritage site and contact to the chairman. The Messer was identified as a F4 model and I found out that my Grandpa did indeed fly for the III/JG 52 at one point. Since his logbook burned when he was shot down, I had no solid way of tracing his way through the war. Now I have about 5 or six ways to find out more..../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Oh, and thanks to dusty61:

Well here's my story.

The Il2 community and forum is the first online forum I've been really into. After lurking around for a month or two I joined up and made my first post somewhere around april 2002. Immediately I got flamed because I mistakenly called Tjeckoslovakia in 1945 The Chech republic.

Didn't visit the lounge at all in the start just read the threads in ORR. When I finally discovered the mother load in the old heydays of the PL i was hooked. Didn't post that much but laughed my @ss of reading the various posts from HD and others.
Remember the AOE (i think) forum invasion and the occational visits to that body building forum (does anyone remember that) with names like "The Iron Lord" and stuff /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Then came 2003 and the Iraq war...... closure of the lounge, talk about the new lounge and finally this.

Sad indeed but it's been a fun ride. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

S! everyone !!!

I saw where things were going when they deleted the history of the pilots' lounge in a George-Orwell-"1984"-moment.

Said goodbye to the UbiForum and that was OK. I have been more productive in RL since then... :-)

There were some fun discussions in here. It's always good to meet people with the same passion for aviation, history and flight sims.

Pace Earwicker: yes I remember HeavyDelta's arrival with that daft discussion about the definition of 'tandem' in navy planes.

As for me, sadly I have never managed to meet any forum members in real life. I still therefore remain an international man of mystery.

Mind you, that pensioner who mugged me a few weeks back on Princes Street, I think it was GoOse8 forced into a desperate act when his social security hadn't come through.

In addition, it occasionally occurs to me that I might bump into SmokeJaguar browsing the merchandise in HMV or GAME (or possibly even the lingerie department in Harvey Nicks) here in Edinburgh. But this has never happened...

Finally, a big thanks to big_lads and Icarus999 for introducing me to the delights of Mudchute and Cockfosters, Ah Mornington Crescent!

The PL is dead! Long live the PL!

Oh boy those were good times...

I can't remember exactly when I joined, all I know it was a long time ago, there was already a Pilot's Lounge but at first I used to post alot in the GD.

Then I decided to join the PL to see what was going on. Man it was a blast! There wasn't a single day when I wouldn't laugh my tush off! I found it hard to post in the GD again, and used to do so only when helping people or having some questions of my own.

I remember laughing my arse so much when seeing the incredible DocLiv's pictures, Taz nearly almost posted jokes and good ones, everyone else was just having fun.

There were of course a few flames, but usually there was good fun all around.

I had some surprises as well, some guys on the forum spoke portuguese! Fala Icarus, Resev, Lee, vocªs esto vivos? Hehehehe

I made a good deal of friends... Veverka being one of the most supportive, this frenchie is cool! I also call most of the EuroTrolls and BlitzPigs today friends.

The EuroTrolls vs BlitzPigs ever ongoing war was a blast! Loads of fun. It generated so many funny threads one couldn't possibl count them.

I miss those days

Can't say I've ever actually met anyone from the forums (although considering all the Minnesotans I've seen on these boards, I may have without knowing it! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ).

Before Il2 came out, trying to get the Beta testers to leak anything!!!

The old "Brown" il2 forum /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The 'unauthorized' demo that came out days before the real one

Killjoy's mosquito (and the time he threatened me with an email attack or something /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif )

Sparky getting banned, and DOMOKUN!!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Of course HD and the whole 'tandem' argument

If it doesn't matter to you, why have you spent so many hours trolling in threads like this?

Off to battle we will go,

RBJ's Supergreg substitution convinced me to set up my own homepage rather than stealing bandwidth. Never did see the switched photo though, Tully did yeoman's service on that one.

Also the arguments with HeavyDelta about what constituted tandem, F-14 front and back or A-6 side by side. EA-6B is both...

I remember HowWorkGun talking about painting George Bush Sr's portrait. That impressed the hell out of me...

I haven't been posting that long because like most other forums at first I visit I just browsed as a guest looking for valuable info on tactics, technical issues, and historical related stuff. I began posting because I found myself following the boards and having a good time watching the discussions ongoing.

I doubt I only speak for myself when I say that WWII history and aviation is a passion. And nowhere else can I find so many who share my interests. The heart of this forum are a handful of regulars who, through helpfulness, respectful conduct, and for consistent interesting and informative posts make this board a singularity in the entire internet. I hope that others along with myself will try to follow the example of these few.

I would like to point out a few who have made my experience on these boards rewarding. Because of my relative noobness I will no doubt leave many out so please feel free to amend my list:

SmokeJaguar
Hunter82
Bearcat99
galingula

Thanks guys.

this one time, on the IL2 forums, I heard something about the new FB coming out. I was a sad panda, cuz I had no $$$ and really wanted to fly the stuka.[the patch never worked properly for me with IL2] I knew I just had to wait and hear all about how great the new FB is and how much fun everyone was having with the new aircraft. And I did wait, for about 2 days. Out of sheer personality, the forum regulars forced me to go and spend money I didn't have JUST so I could get involved and try to meet and greet some of the great people that hang out here. [then there is RBJ] I started to read the boards every day, then all day. THEN I let some forum members talk me into trying online play. That was it. I was hooked forever. I learned valuable things like never put your unibrow on a slider, and how to set up my graphics so I could actually play with the rest of you that don't have a hardware defficiency. So many firsts for me in this community. My first online persona, my first forum, for that matter! I was getting into this community right when we had the PL nightmare. I was sad to see the death throes of the old community, but proud to be one of the new guard, not outright trying to be an asshat but keeping it light and funny if I can. I hope to help people just like so many of you did for me and spread the word of this great sim!

I remember first visiting this forum during the development of IL2.
I've always avoided posting too much because of the old adage about 'arguing on the internet and winning the special olympics' /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
However I did get sucked in to some of the more ephemeral conversations...avoiding the ones that all got a bit 'Gareth' (those of you who watch the Office will know what I mean).
Mornington Crescent giving a sad old expat a long draught of the juice from home.

Had several corking weekends with the big_lads tribe (including Pud the cat) and intend having many more.
Through him I'm also looking at making a trip to see the (unfeasably tall) oFzO soon and well as hooking up with some of the Parisian boys.

Almost met the Major once, but an alcohol fuelled trip to Auld Reekie is never the best time to arrange a visit with someone you've never met...the next time I promise Major!
Sadly in Glasgow this weekend, and I know your pride wouldn't stretch to the trip down the M8

otherwise, this is a relatively cool bunch of people...even the wankers are fun to watch /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I started looking at this forum to find out when the patches were coming out, I never really posted much but always found this forum a good way to get my mind out of the job when on the job. I remember the 'completely worthless treads' from Earwick, the 'I got dumped from Harry, the Chips/Homo pictures, the Mash sigs, Killjoy, but most of all and the funniest of all was the 'Dating Game' era, it was so funny. They were so funny that I had to stop reading them because my laugh was drawing too much attention at work. Too bad this forum isn't as funny anymore. Regards to the old timers.

I met Doc_Liv. I was posting some pics of Alaska and said if any one ever comes up to look me up. He came up and we had a good time. Went fishing, hiking and went to the Bush Company (strip club) and had a few beers at Chilkoot Charlies. We went on a boat tour down in Seward and on the way back visited Glacier park and on the trail watched a Black bear walk six feet in front us. I think that was the most memorable moment.

Actually I have read some fine stuff here, from simple witty remarks to in depth info on flight dyamics of planes.

Sometimes even written by actual pilots !!!!

I once got a nice PM too from a guy from Tazmania.

First off HD, I assume you're talking about me, and I couldn't care less what you think of me. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Secondly, I didn't even know about the so-called incident until I received a PM today.

Moreover, I think it's possible to agree with even the most deranged individual in certain circumstances, while being abhorred by the individual in other instances...my experience with you would be a prime example of that.

Just FYI, one of my associates in the pressroom is a WSJ reporter, who I personally consoled the day it was announced that Daniel Pearl was dead...they were close friends.

Although I would have been horrified to see the video (just the thought of it brings up a lot of strong emotions regarding 9-11 related incidents for me), the behavior of certain active and ex-military entities on the forums is almost just as wrong, IMHO.

Another blunder by HeavyDelta...who would've thought? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Have a nice day moron,

S!

Most of the guys in squads have been together for many years.

Some members in our squad RAF74 are approaching 5 years and still fly together on a regular basis. We started out with Red Baron 3d and now have IL2FB as the squads second official sim.

Ive made many good friends in my squad and even though I live in Australia ive met up with RAF74_Vicious at 2 airshows in Australia. We had a great time and i look forward to seeing him and his wife in the future.

Up to 10 in our squad have met up at airshows in the states.

I hope one day to visit many of my friends from No 74 squadron RAF in the states when i eventually get there.

RAF74 Taipan

Good one dood! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

When confronted with the facts, retreat into a corner, lie and call a 42 year-old man "diaper boy". /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Hurry along now, and go get the mindless mob to reduce the thread to flames...don't expect me to participate as you do it though...I have better things to do than appease your misplaced angst.

Cheers,

A year ago or so I download the original IL-2 demo and played it to death for 6 months. (I couldn't afford the $40 for the full game then.) 6 months later I was able to finally download the 2nd demo. (Took awhile with a 56K. It kept disconnecting because it took 10+ hrs to download). I finally brought IL-2 Sturmovick 3 months ago and am now addicted.

About 2 months ago I discovered the forum. I'd never visited forums except to scrounge about for info on whatever game I was currently into. I posted a total newbie question, (and I still do because I stil am IMO, lol) and was amazed at the amount of good helpful responses I received. Since then I have been hooked on both IL-2 and the forum. To the point that I am now going to go into debt /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif to upgrade my computer so I can play FB. I even got a cable connection so I could play online, something I'd never tried before. (For more reasons than my old 56K).
As a result I am a better flyer than I ever was with the countless hours with Janes WW2 Fighters, EAW and CFS2.
Reading this thread has given me a better understanding of the IL-2/FB community and it's history. I missed out on the PL (it was already gone) and it seems that I missed out on something really cool.

And to this community, a big THANK YOU!
You have helped me understand this sim, it's history and even improved my knowledge of computers with your advise and links to other resources.

I have posted quite a bit in these few months and would like to thank everyone who's replied, even those who flamed me (I probably deserved it) /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif .
I've thanked the following people before for their help but would like to take this opportunity to thank them again:
Tully, Deathsledge, CD_Merlin, Supr, Hunter82, Bearcat99, and everyone else whose name I can't remember, /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

and especially steve_v,

who posted the first response to my very first question and did something that had never happened to me before, welcomed me to the community. That one act has given me a sense of belonging to something pretty special.
Thanks all!

Hehe, quite a good old thread here.

I don't really feel like dredgin up specific stories, but I have some good memories from this place.

I posted in these forums from 11 different countries. When I was travelling around, no matter where I was, I had to try and find a computer, at least to get those pre-FB Friday Updates! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

At the time, I hadn't played Il-2, or any other comptuer game, in months, and drooling over those screenshots was as good as it got.

Now, many months later, I still haven't bought FB. Waiting for the patch, and waiting till I can afford a better graphics card.

I admit kind of stopped caring about this place - not because of any of the drama, not because the PL disappeared, but because the software stopped working.

I'm still a regular over at the new Pilot's Lounge. It sure is a vulgar, nasty, and childish place. I love every minute of it. The people over there, those foul-mouthed fooligans, as you lot rightly call them, are probably the only people I've met over the internet that I would actually consider to be friends.

Be seeing you.

Ive been playing IL-2/FB ever since it was released, always looking for new ways to do things with the full Mission builder, ergo my capture airbase mission posted at the IL-2 Missions area.(under JG77_GK)

Hosting a Luftwaffe group I used to see people post about the Pacific here, and I was very anti Pacific back towards them in my posts, but when I thought about it, I relized this Sim FB is so flexible, that you can create many theatres of WW II here.

So Ive gone from being very Anti Pacific, to doing everything I can possibly think of to re create the most authentic possible recreation of the Pacific yet that you could create within FB.
I researched battle areas in the Pacific and looked for maps already within FB that displayed physical characteristics of these areas ,squadrons that took part, aircraft already available in FB, researched Aircraft skins already made by Pacific enthusiasts within FB, and now I am nearly complete, the last piece of my Pacific recreation effort falls into place when the Japanese Zero is released into FB.

Not bad for somebody that was once totaly anti Pacific!
