Can you play IL2 with the keyboard? Because I am still waiting for my HOTAS. And is it easy to play with the keyboard?

You can, but you won't want to, gunnery becomes luck and turning on the edge of a stall is next to impossible without a joystick.

Yes, and then you can come complain here about how the FM's are all wrong /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

If you're setting it to easy, yes, you can fly with keyboard, but it's still hard to aim.

If you're setting it to FR, yes, you can stall out very quickly.... =)

Keyboard only? Or are you using a Joystick of some kind?

If you just mean keyboard for selecting views, engine settings, prop pitch, flaps, etc. etc. etc., then yes, it is fairly easy to use the keyboard to fly. Using a joystick with throttle, HAT switch and rudder (or using rudder pedals and stick), will reduce the number of keyboard commands you need to know to just a handful.

I wouldn't recommend trying to fly with only the arrow keys and keyboard commands.

I tried with a keyboard. I had little luck ... then I got this dirt cheap joystick, and I still had to use the keyboard (uh, no rudder? what you mean I need rudder? What for??)... it wasn't a pleasant experience.

Unless you enjoy pressing the A button a lot.

Although it is possible to fly, and do some basic manoeuvres, don't expect any miracles. Its like racing Nascar with keyboard. It works if you use aids... but only will go so far.

Well you see I dont have the game and I don't have my joystick either. I want to purchase IL2 until Lo-Mac comes out and was simply wondering if you can play with the keyboard, just looking for simple answers to a simple question.

That's a total of 26 commands in that list you gave me. Ok now let me ask you guys this....

How long is the learning curve ofr this sim? Is it as tough as Flanker 2.5?

I would figure the HOTAS Cougar is the best best but not enough $$$ for that so I figure the next best thing would be the X45. Am I right?

If there's a Staples near you, until June the 30th there's a sale on Microsoft Sidewinder FF2 (C50$ mail-in rebate) that's quite a good price.

It's a great stick: force feedback and a "twist" handle for the rudder.

Cheers /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If you mean IL-2 and not IL-2 FB the learning curve is high, and may take some time to get the hang of, don't get discouraged.

If you mean IL-2 FB, its still tough, but not as hard as IL-2 to get the hang of at this present time. Hopefully the patch will address this with the FM of all the planes. Time will tell, patch supposed to be out end of next month.... again.

erh.. I have killed 290 airplanes in the russian fighter campaign after 90 missions, with nearly full real diff.
My point is that i dont use a stick in this camp. I use keyboard, wich you was asking if it was possible to fly with

Broder_balle,

1- Are you a professional concert pianist by any chance?

2- Do you have a joystick now?

just curious,

It is pretty high but the most fun you can have learning a sim. I dont know about Flanker as i dont relly care for jet sims...

IMO....yes....but if you wait for a refurbed X45 and get the MS stick on sale for $50 after the rebate you can use them both and have the best of both worlds.

if u want to play witha keyboard u cant press down the arrow keys (or whatever keys u use) for very long...u have to constantly tap them to make smoother manuvers. Is it possible? of course...i used to play il-2 without a keyboard for months until i figured a way to fix my stick. it takes practice....killing is a lil hard

Then I have no choice but to wait for my X45. I am playing Flanker 2.5 with the keyboard at the moment and it's to hard. Press the arrow key a little to long like 2 seconds and your plane goes into a spin. Grrrrrrr /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif Frustrating. I might go check at Best Buy tonight to see if they can't order it for me (two days delivery guarantee) because I have been waiting a month now at this other store and they tell me it wont be in for another 2 weeks. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
