Laying around watching a "hangover movie" that I've never seen before, the 1948 flick "Fighter Squadron" on the Turner Classic Movie network.

A bunch of German P-51Ds bounce a squadron of American P-47Ds. I thought I was still drunk from the night before. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Good ol' Hollywood. Great shots of planes flying mixed with gun camera footage. But hilarious otherwise.

Hangover Movie: Any movie that does not require thought and that is relatively quiet. If the inflicted person falls asleep during any part, the inflicted person does not miss any plot points. Mostly, due to a lack of plot points.

Yeah, I caught the tail end of it where the P-47s were strafing some OD Green Mustangs with black crosses on them. A classic piece of post war Hollywood filmaking. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This might not be as rediculous as it first seems... Before the P-51D, the mustang looked alot like the Bf-109 if you saw it from a distance. When the first mustangs got into service with the RAF, they had to deal with friendly fire alot. The man that designed the P-51 was a German who made frequent visits to the Messerschmidt factories before the war.

But all in all, I am surprised that they couldn't dig up a few real BF-109's so shortly after the war.

Some of the guncam footage showed Japanese planes on the ground being strafed, had me laughing so hard I spilled my beer...

In hindsight, I'd like to own "Fighter Squadron". It's got so much T-bolt footage!

Have you ever watched the fighters escorts and aerial combat scenes in "12 O'Clock High" closely? It's a mish-mash of stock footage that doesn't completely make sense if scrutinized carefully. Offhand, I remember P-38s peeling away, then an attack by Bf-109s with omminous close-ups of P-47 guns firing. The B-17 gunners return fire and some Spitfires explode. At least that's how I remember it.

The best thing in that movie is Kate Beckinsale. Sweet http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

"Although Kindelberger had no experience with fighters, he collaborated with his friend and colleague J. Leland Atwood to formulate an outline for a fighter project. A project team was formed at North American, made up of such people as Raymond H. Rice, Edgar Schmued, Larry Waite and E. H. Horkey. A sort of urban legend has grown up about Edgar Schmued, which claims that he had once worked for Willy Messerschmitt and that the Mustang was heavily influenced by the Bf 109. "

legends have a long live.
also you could call the Ju88 than a american plane because two american engenieers haleps junkers a lot in construction of new fuselage constructions - compare Ju52 with Ju88 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

We former squids prefer bull **** depth indicators; fewer moving parts and no need for calibration.

On the subject of the movie, I remember it being so bad that my ex liked it...

cheers

Here's another one: in the film Cross of Iron, when the german lines are under air attack, what type of aircraft do you think are pounding on the positions?

Well, I know a lot of american aircraft were shunted over to the USSR under lend lease, but I don't think that Corsairs were ever received by the VVS!!!!

While on this topic....

Just yesterday I found a copy of 663 Squadron in my local grocery store for $9.95. I bought it for the Mosquitos on the cover.

I haven't watched it completely. I saw the intro (cool, 3 real Mosquitos buzzing around) and I fast forwarded to the fjord attack. Lot's of crazy model Mosquitos flying with flames going up at about 30 degrees of angle and then doing flaky explosion into rocks. AND, the German fighters look kind of like Me-108 Taifuns!!

Well, my vote goes to Fighter Squadron based on flight footage, German P-51s or no German P-51s. Maybe the story is better in 663 Squadron. I will find out.
