View Full Version : What happened to the gunner's warnings from IL-2?

Just flew the IL-2 in the original IL-2 Sturmovik 1.2 (not FB!). One thing I noticed is that the tail gunner will warn you when an enemy is going to fire from your six. He'll shout something like "Break left" and sometimes the display says "Dodge! Enemy at our tail!"

In FB the voice sample is still there; it's Actor 5 (Folder \samples\Speech\.). But I have never heard the warning while I was flying the IL-2 in FB! The feature seems to be missing.

Is there an explanation for this? Was it too complicated to implement the same thing for bigger bombers with more gunners so they decided to remove it completely? Maybe because they had only one voice with that sample?

Has it ever been brought up in ORR?

Since you said it's there I did some more testing.

Result: The gunner won't warn you by default -- you have to enable Autopilot at least for a moment in order to enable the warnings!

Looks like a bug to me. Or does this make sense?

Wow, I don't remember that happening during the entire IL2 campaign I completed. If you have to used the autopilot, maybe that's why, since I never used that setting.

Even in multiplayer mode you can switch on/off the gunner's Autopilot. Doing this offline also activated the warnings for me. So it may still be an Autopilot issue.

This is a good question, because I've also wondered why this doesn't occur more often. I've only had it happen once--it really surprised me, but I did what the nice man suggested and broke left. Saved my life, for a while at least.

I have only just recently started some IL2 missions as both Pilot and Gunner and have found Similar problems.

As an IL2 Pilot in several Campaigns I have Created I have found my Rear Gunner has a Severe sleep deprevation Problem as I hardly Ever hear him fire at ANYTHING. About 95% Of the Time the only indication that a FW190 is behind me is when I see one of my Wings traveling in a different Direction to the rest of my plane. Is this Normal IL2FB Gunner behaviour or is something Wrong?

Only on One or Two occasions have I heard the Gunner actually tell me to Break Left or Right.

I have also Played several Missions as Gunner and Left the AI to pilot the Plane as I was tired of getting relentlesly shot down from Behind. This resulted in the Pilot AI Mid -air coliding on One occasion and plumiting into the Ground on Several Others at various parts of the Mission.
The AI Pilots use alot of flaps to alter their speed in formation Flying , especially as their forming up. This combined with the Very Low level missions usually combines into death.

Another thing that I have Noticed is that the IL2 Rear Gunner when manned by a Human can seemingly Duck down into the Armour Tube on the IL2 (I assume this is realistic) But it seems that the Game only Assumes the Gunner is stationary in the seat and you get Nailed as if you were just sitting in the One position -- Which makes it impossible to avoid virtual death.

I dont want to be a labelled as a Rear Gunner Whiner - But I think I may have failed /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

If anyone can Offer Assistance - Im all Ears .

OK, I've opened a new thread about the warnings in ORR:
