View Full Version : What's With The AI?

I flew a QMB with 8 P-40s vs 8 Zekes & got myself killed in the first pass so I just sat there & watched the rest of the fight. Now, looking at a P-40 I saw that "he" made another head-on & then a half loop to get on the tail of the Zeke but stayed inverted & chased the enemy for 2 minutes in a long climb - inverted all the time. Then the Zeke broke low & the P-40 followed it but lowered the flaps to landing position where they stayed for the rest of the fight. Then "he" raised the flaps & headed into the sea from at least 1000 meters - BOOM! The plane had not been hit while I followed it. This took place on the Okinawa map. I've noticed that the AI crashes a lot but never really seen what happens before now. Is this a bug or what's going on?

The well known random drunkeness feature.

Not very helpful but you could write a book about bizarre AI behaviour tbh http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

AI still a lot better than anything else out there though.

Upgrade.

The AI does wierd things when your processor/ram is swamped.

One thing that is strange about the AI i believe is about when the AI decides to abandon a bomber. Ive seen bombers making slow dives turning around ( after damaging the controls ) but without the crew abandoning, and other times the crew abandons the bomber immediatly ( this happens usally when a engine catches a fire - the AI never uses fire extinguisers i suppose ).

Really, you'd think they'd have more sense... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

It has been so long since I have flown another sim but....... can you even watch the AI do battle in other sims? Im not trying to be a wise@ss either.. I am curious......

I do not believe that the AI of the game is bad. Of course it has a few flaws ( i dont think that anyone can deny that ) but in general it works pretty well.

Go play Rowan's BoB, EAW and not an WW2 sim though, Mig Alley.
AI in these sim is certainly more intelligent then the monkey pilots in IL2.

LOL http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

I nominate this for comedy quote of the month.

I have both EAW and BoB and find the AI in IL2 to be more challenging and fun to fly against than either of those sims.

Its not without its stupidity issues and has appeared to go backwards in recent patches but its better than most (with the possible exception of the AI in Flanker 2 and EF2000. Thise guys were MEAN)

I agree! The AI can be absolutely appalling. I remember when flying Allied in EAW you really dreaded going up against 190's because they would roll, dive and continue rolling evasive manuevers while you chased them and frequently resulted in an overshoot (can you say I'm screwed!). My biggest peeve with the AI in FB is the second squad. Tell them to rejoin and they acknowledge affirmatively then continue on whatever course they were already headed on. This is particularly true in PF as you begin to draw near your carrier group. They begin to accelerate away from your flight. Tell them to rejoin and you get a teenager's response: OK and then does whatever he or she wants! I can understand AI issues in the heat of battle when the number of scenarios gets pretty substantial but on approach there is no excuse! Just my 2 cents.

IIRC externals has been featured in many sims since the early 90s so its not a very special thing for the IL2-series. However, this is not the issue & (I don't think you're an *******) but I'm wondering why the AI can do highly advanced stuff like E-fighting & then auger in like some artificial noob - this doesn't make sense - it must be a bug but before annoying Oleg with it I would like to hear what you think. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
