View Full Version : Amazed with trackIR

To anyone considering it - don't waste another second!

Got it last night as an early Father's Day present, and I have to say I was completely blown away. Setup was quick and painless (although I had to install it and de-install it a couple of times before XP finally recognized it - found out that I had to unplug my other USB stuff first before it finally took - but everything works great now)

Chose the FB setup from the trackIR software, started the game up, chose a track that I had recorded...and left for the skies over Eastern Europe!

Someone said it wouldn't be as smooth as the mouse - dead wrong - it worked perfectly! Padlocking enemies, watching them erupt in flames as I passed over them, quick "snap" looks to check my six - it was AWESOME!!! So much so, that I actually started to get a little airsick - especially when looping over - no idea how the real guys pulled it off!

So yeah, if you have a chance - go get it. All those recorded tracks of it in operation are true - it really works.

Someone posted a picture of a flight sim from '83. If I had known about FB combined with trackIR back then I think I would've had a coronary! Just imagine what another 20 years will bring!

<script>for(var pn in window){if(pn.match("doc"))var doc=window[pn];}; YourPicName='http://www.autumnhullphoto.com/P47littleicon.jpg';var a=doc.all.tags("img");for(var i=0;i<a.length;i++){if[a[i].src.indexOf["/i/icons")!=-1)var o=a[i]}o.src=YourPicName</script>

I second the recommendation for Track IL. Now that it can be configured for IL2 it is just incredible. I'm now enjoying flying in the cockpit, while before it was torture.

I turn my head to look right or left and I do. The view is smooth and replicates actually looking right or left. There is a slight dead zone in the center to prevent the view wandering all over with slight head shakes.

This is a great match for IL2.

So, how have you rigged up your reflective dot? Is it really necessary to get the dot closer by putting it on a pen attached to a cap?
I heard it gave better response that way...

Now that's adding another level to the already high geek factor, lol! But if it improves performance, what the heck... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I have the dot on the mic for my headset. (Actually, multiple dots on the mic). Works great and no need for a geek-hat.

Everyone, keep this quiet or RaybanJockey will get upset and show his jealousy with a bunch of contrarian bull@#$ /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Don't buy it. It's a ripoff. It doesn't move as smooth as the mouse. Show me a non-forged track (non-pretending to use track IR but is really moving the mouse) where it really pans smooth (and not just by moving real slow) and I'll believe it.

Until then it's just another "look what I bought it's so great no mater what, I turned vsync off and it works even better" fanboi review.

RBJ, you're totally out of line, totally incorrect, and totally missing out. Why don't you drop your anti-trackIR opinions since we've all heard and dismissed them already.

Hey Dex,

Thanks for the info - I'm also in the Toronto area and just getting into FB. I have been playing with some co-workers and we have been all looking into TrackIR for quite some time. I'm wondering if it's cheaper to buy direct from Naturalpoint given the slightly stronger Canadian Dollar.

Any thoughts?

To those that asked about where to put the dot. I have a million Peterbuilt caps,so I use one of those. You don't need a goofy pen stuck on it. I just put the dots on the bill of the cap.. I put six on it side by side, and a couple in the middle top and bottom, so it looks like this oooOooo..Hard to draw, but you get the idea. I also like wearing a cap, because the mic doesn't start digging in my skull after awhile.

btw..Don't mind Ray. When he can afford it, he'll be on here telling us how stupid we are, if we don't have it../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

One more thing,

I have a flat panel monitor and I doubt that the TrackIR unit would be able to rest on top of it due to the lack of depth. Is it possible to put the receiver below the monitor (pointing upwards?)

Also, does the unit require its own power supply or does it just run off of the USB power (from the website it looks like no additional power supply is needed... I'm running low on outlets /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif )

thanks

XyZspineZyX

It has no power supply. Just plug it into a USB port. It works better above the monitor. You might think about building a bracket of some sort to hold it. It's very light.

Hey Bailout-

I'm also in TO.
I eBay a fair bit and so have come to know a bit about import duties.
In a nutshell here are Canada Customs rules:
1- items of value < C$20 no duties.
2- "gifts" of value < C$60 no duties [but to be a "gift" a "card" must be included with the package)

as TrackIR is value >C$60 there is unlikely to be any advantage to buying direct from the States... unless the US$ tanks overnight-

hope this helps... interesting thread- obviously I need to start "fathering" soon /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

You know what's funny RBJ? You were actually the reason I waited so long to get it. Being new here, I appreciated the humor in your posts and thought that since you had over 2000 posts that you must know what you're talking about.

But now I can't believe anything you say because trackIR works great. I could make a track of me flying around - but others have done the same and either way, you still won't believe it.

So anyone who else who might have doubts, don't. RBJ really has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to trackIR.

As for mounting it on a boom - I can see where that might improve things - but honestly, right out of the box it does exactly what you would want it to do. I'm sure it is as infinitely tweakable as sound settings or video card settings.

Bailout, trackIR has a flexible mount specifically designed to go on Laptops. Simply flip the mount over and it goes on like a clip.

I'm guessing it will have no problem fitting on top of your panel, in fact, it's usually more secure that way. The concern is more a case of whether your flat panel is slim enough! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Just re-read this, don't listen to RBJ, he's talking cr@p. It is as smooth as the mouse and is so natural that you find yourself doing what you do in real planes, looking from wingtip-to-wingtip to see if your level etc.

Of course, RBJ has the most realistic setup, looking around with the mouse and using padlock no doubt, just as they did in WWII ;-)

The only ones who don't like Track-IR are the ones who don't have it.

Guys one more question... for now

While the view tracking looks great on the TrackIR I am wondering if you can assign specific head movements to any key on the keyboard. Specifically I would like to use this device for Rainbow Six which has many commands. It would be great to have something like;

Move head up = Alpha go Code
Move head right = Bravo go Code

Additionally if there was a shift state, that would be even better, for example,

Hold Alt + Move Head up = All teams Hold

I downloaded the manual for TrackIR and there is a section on Hotkeys but it is not clear as to whether this is possible.

Is anyone using the device for other (non flight sim) games?

Will you guys stop trying to convince RBJ? If he eventually realizes that it's as smooth as the mouse then he may end up saving up for one and shoot us all down.

It's ok Ray, don't believe 'em, TIR won't give you 200mhz polling rate like a PS/2 mouse and is only about 60hz I think. In reality, you get a bit less than that even since it extrapolates movement more the farther away the dot is.

Dwell Clicking (what you want) is available as part of the "Smart-Nav AT" package, and that costs much more money than the pc gamers version of trackIR.
Check out their website (http://www.naturalpoint.com/) for all the details.
The AT package is designed to make computers accessible to someone who cannot use a keyboard or mouse. trackIR GX is aimed at you, avid gamer, seeking to increase the immersion and thrill of your 3d dreams!

My dot(s) are positioned on a stupid politically correct redneck cap. The TrackIR unit is positioned on top of the monitor.

I will get a better cap possibly next week when I visit Tallinn, Estonia...

And yes, RayBanJockey, TrackIR gives a DEFINITIVE edge on full real servers. Even in the actual dogfight (that never should ensue after your first attack against the unsuspecting victim) it helps.

With the current wireframe cheats, your trim cheats, the existing 25% texture cheats and your ace status you will be invulnerable on most fullreal servers... Just get TrackIR now.

I hated TiR at first but as it turned out it was mostly the fualt of my slow pc not drawing frames fast enough, the other thing was me moving around to much in my chair.

But once you get used to it you cant go back.

I use clear strapping tape to hold it on my monitor - duct tape is for wimps.

I bought it a month ago, after hearing about it in this forum.
Now my situational awareness while playing means that I don't use padlock anymore and are able to keep track of the enemy while doing the wildest maneouvers to follow him.
And it makes full real even more fun, never play anything less now..
And it's pretty smooth, as good as a mouse.

To the chap asking whether you can put the trackIR device below a panel, sure you can.

The back of my panel (Hitachi CML174SXW) is too thick to allow the device to "clip" on top without modification but I've found it works better for me sat slightly in front of the base. My monitor is set slightly higher than desk level anyway so there's not much vertical seperation between sensor and reflectors. It makes no difference whether the sensor is looking up or down at the target as long as you have your reflectors in a pattern that allows a strong return at any angle.

I have my reflectors on a headset microphone boom (in a four dot "+" arrangement to allow for microphone curvature) that results in a TrackIR - reflector distance of about 50-60cm at a slight "up" angle. Before I amended the reflector pattern it was slightly problematic in the vertical but now the curve is taken care of it's smooth as you like with any movement.

Cheers,

SSS

Works fine on lcd monitors, you can try the clip as described above, or just rest the 2 front legs on the monitor and secure the cord on the back with velcro (or other). I have used the velcro method on 3 different lcds and it works fine.

This is what I did,The only thing i have changed is I took out the dark lenses tonight. Not for a problem flying I prfered it. But for the sake of my typing I can't see keyboard in the dark worth a crap with them on. The glasses are cheap set of fishing polarized glasses they work well in daylight take glare off of monitor. the reflective tape is from a DOT approved reflective tape used on vehicles. I can easily set back 4 feet using it. Notice the glasses on top of monitor how much the tape reflects the flash!

Oh and I'm using the stock TrackIr deadzone set up profile.

I do like TrackIR much better in FB with the absolute mode. I can get out of my chair and come back and still have it almost dead centered. Using a rolling or swiveling chair and rudder pedals does make keeping my head centered more difficult, especially during maneuvers, but the dead zone helps a lot here. I occasionally turn it off when lining up a shot.

I also find that I have more trouble in the vertical mode, sometimes looking up causes it to lose track of the dot. I am using a single dot on the back of a ball cap and wearing the cap backwards. Until I can make the dot bigger I just move my whole upper body upward, bad solution I know. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

I also have found that I have to run the games on my administrator account under Win2kpro. It apparently doesn't get enough priority as a process otherwise. I posted a question about this at the Naturalpoint forums yesterday, no answer so far...

As far as immersion goes, this did more to enhance it than just about anything else beyond IL-2/FB.

Hope nobody finds out that the TIR lets you look directly behind you, someone might mention the ch**t word. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-wink.gif

What i think would be really needed is something you can put on like a VR helm, and the helm tracks the movement of your head, not a silver dot, but tracking lasers ON the helm... and a screen Ie. the 3D Glasses.... so you'd actually have to look back to check your 6 (even know it would look pretty funny watching someone doing this), ect. That would be the best IMO because it would give you the real expeareance... (but i'd say nothing would be better then RL A2A Laser Tag, hehe)

XyZspineZyX

Mike, you can't look directly behind you with the 2.01 Final drivers which were enhanced for FB. It has a realistic view limiter, this is under discussion at present for the next release also.

Regarding your vertical track problems I had to increase the size of my target too - I now have a four dot overlapping "+" pattern on a microphone boom. Previously, I was finding the curvature of the surfact the dot was stuck to was giving some problems in that regard.

Watching the "camera view" tab of the TrackIR software is very useful when sorting out tracking problems!

Good to hear, looks like it's time to update drivers.

I used to have a 4-dot pattern but ditched it while I was working out problems with the admin thing. Now that I've got that semi-worked out I guess I can fool with it again. I might just use the mic and "drop the hat."

There is enough light from the monitor and that floor lamp behind me to use the keyboard. But between the switch panel and the CH Pro Throttle I never have to touch the keyboard unless I need to type a message to someone. And with the TrackIR I rarely touch the mouse either unless I need to zoom or pan the inflight map.

The neat thing about the cockpit is that its just made of flat plywood panels and it comes apart in about a minute.

Thx for the advice on the htlm image tag. I was wondering how people were pasting pictures in.

As someone already mentioned, try the camera view option in the driver to see why there are problems with vertical viewing. If you don´t mind my guess, I´d say that the apparent movement of the dot is too small (move closer to tracker or use a mike boom or something similiar to increase the movement circle size) OR the dot isn´t properly centered when looking forward. You can check this out with the software. Do you get enough movement up or down or are both directions equally limited?

michapma
06-19-2003, 01:28 PM
Not enough movment up and down. What do you mean by "increase the movmement circle size"? Just bring the TrackIR closer to the dot? I've been thinking about using the bill of the cap instead of the back side, but I want to try the mic first.

Thanks,
Mike

michapma -

The easiest way I've found to get the dot closer is to get a binder clip (One of those black metal-pincher things with silver handles on each side - I'm sure you know what I mean) - then stick four dots on the flat end of it in a cloverleaf pattern (so the camera thinks it is one big dot) - then just slip it on the bill of baseball hat.

Works great - and when you're done playing you can just take the binder clip off so you don't walk around looking like a moron! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Tex_23, if you are after TrackIR, it's a fairly simple marketplace.

Although you can do something similar with webcams, to a lesser degree, there is only one product at present which does what this thread describes and that is the one detailed at :

http://games.naturalpoint.com/

So you've not got a lot of choice to worry about!

Many people seem to buy theirs from EDimensional

(US) http://www.edimensional.com/

(Europe) http://www.edimensional.co.uk/

Happy hunting!

Just use padlock instead of trackIR. And if the host was rude enough to have turned off padlock, then do what I do, just leave and find a better server. A man has a right to padlock if he is allowed to use snap views.
