Is there a way to disable the pilot's vulnerability without making the plane invulnerable? I keep getting shot in the face in single player campaign. It's frustrating. I don't want to be invincible entirely, I just want the pilot to not get killed by a lucky shot from a tail gunner. I know it reduces realism but I'm not actually a WWII pilot so I'm fine with this if it's possible. Thank you!

Nope m8, unfortunately there us no way to do this... Ai gunners in this game are snipers on higher skill settings http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif . They are capable of crazy deflection shots while their aircraft is taking evasive maneuvers!! Bf-110 comes to mind...

Best way to avoid bomber gunners is either to bnz them at high speed and not parking on their six. Even rookies will probably hit you if you park on their six.

Ah yes the AI snipers. That's why I only ever do diving head on runs at most bombers anymore, otherwise they hit me square in the face with the first round if their first burst, take out all my cannons, or immediately disable my engine/rudder/elevator, etc. Better to only take down one bomber than to have to hit "refly" a dozen times.
I thought that maybe 4.10 would have addressed this issue, but alas...

You're still getting killed by sniper gunners in 4.10? During testing they seemed to be significantly less capable... especially if blinded by the sun (now works) or the darkness during a night mission.

Sometimes they get you from their dead six, sometimes they don't. I'm never really patient enough to do what you're supposed to do, which is fly high above and behind them then swoop in on them from above--for one thing it always seems like I mess it up and come in so I'm facing directly at them from dead six instead of from a sharp angle like my intention was...so I just get lazy and attack from dead six. I find that usually I can get away with it but often my plane really gets screwed up, though I rarely get shot down I guess since most bombers only have .30 cals.

Worst was the time I was flying quite far below and behind a bomber and I saw a single tracer squirt out of its tail and fall and fall and fall and then it hit my plane...sniped!

It sounds like you are diving too early. You should try and hold off your dive until you are near to or directly above the target bomber, then dive. This should give you a better chance of making a good attack and give you the speed to dive away and then climb back up to the strike position again.

The main problem in this case is judging your closure speed and firing at the right time and not colliding with the bomber as you zoom below it.

Yeah... best eagle attacks are when you invert and dive on a bomber directly below you and in the process you even push stick slightly up to give the target bomber a nice deflection burst.

I see now that it can actually really pay off targeting pilot because I've shot down a few bombers after pilot died from bleeding.

When shooting upwards or downwards more than a little, your shots will be high in relation to the pipper. It might help a little with lead though.

Attack from the front if you can and shoot long as your combined approach speed will be very high. My fave is to approach off to one side and back a bit then turn in and fire a bit ahead of the nice long target. Just don't stay more than 1/2 sec flying straight on aim, turn and drop.

What would you do if there were escorts even if the gunners were lousy?

Yes, but to be honest Ive only ran one or two bomber intercepts in 4.10. I'm not impressed enough with it to give up my 4.09+UP+etc yet.
now when there's a new UP for 4.10, watch out buddy cause Ill be there with bells on.
