I'm new here as you can see and I have a few questions, I hope you don't mind answering.

1. Is there a downloadable demo to PF?
2. Is the community big enough?
3. Is the ping/latency an important factor in online play?

The game looks like a real fun according to the screenshots and I would like to try it if it's possible. I know a store around where I live which sells the 1946 DVD for $40, kinda cheap.

Thx for reading.

Hi, welcome here!

1. Nope, at least, not that I know of... there is one of the Original Sturmovik though: Here's a link to a download of it (http://www.download.com/IL-2-Sturmovik-demo/3000-7547_4-10230099.html)
2. Me thinks 'yes', but... what do you consider is a 'big community'?
3. Yes, it is. Having a 'bad' connection will affect online game play in a negative way.

Go get it!
(Maybe check if your computer's specs are up to 1946's levels... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gifSpecs on the box are really mini-mini-minimal specs... )

might come in handy, IL2 Joy Control (By Oleg_BS) (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=1021) can even be more usefull!)

Yeah I guess it wasn't specific enough. When I say a big community I mean to an active online community. I'm not the singleplayer type gamer and this game looks fun only on the internet, so in case that I buy it I wanna be sure that I won't play with 3-4 people online.

And thanks for the demo, I hope it will give me a basic view on the game.

If you want to play online, forget the UBI servers. They don't always work but when it does, it isn't that good. For some good online experience, download the hyperlobby client from http://hyperfighter.sk/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=...&cid=2&orderby=dateA (http://hyperfighter.sk/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=2&orderby=dateA)
I don't play online that much but I hope someone else will drop in and inform you a bit about wich rooms you should try.

Ow, the community is big enough. Only not on UBI. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

It surely will, though in the years since the demo lots has changed, and even more has been added!

Oh, and this community is now big enough http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
