I found this rather interesting...

Long Range Cannon Kill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jP3IS0mQOY&feature=related)

What is the fighter doing the shooting?

It's a Ki-84.

I had something like that happen a while back. I was flying a P-39 against a 109 in QMB. The 109 was way to far out for me to expect to hit it, but it was flying nice and steady so I said "what the heck" and lobbed just one 39mm shell at him. It took off the vertical stabilizer and the AI pilot bailed!

That's nothing try that at more than .85 distance with the P-63 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifI've done that once bfore I just have to dig the ntrk somewhere LOL

The Hayate is a easier because of the two guns unlike the P-63 or P-39.So yeah P-63 or P-39 single dead shots are more like it.

I once was told I was cheating when i shot somebody with the P-63 this way so I shot him again the second time and he shut up after that LOL.

for some reason im a REALLY good shot with a ki84, like i will take out planes with my first burst almost everytime.
but usually with other planes i never even get close, lol i suck at shooting http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I seem to recall that shells fired from MK214 50mm monster on a Me262A-1/U4 (which is also modelled in a Me410 mod from AAA) do not "dissapear" after some time. Coupled with its high muzzle velocity and relatively high accuracy it could be the perfect weapon for such long shots.

Nice, I've done it some time ago in a P-39N.
it's just a very lucky shot though, not something to practice as usually you won't hit ****.
But IF you hit you're one happy pilot. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

I used to fly online with an IL2-3M. It drove the other guys nuts. They'd whack at me with their piddly machine guns and then zoom past. I'd lift up my nose as they were climbing ahead of me and let loose a few rounds of 37mm. Sometimes I'd connect after just one or two shots and teir little fighter would go "Poof!"

Of course I'd always get spanked in the end, but I P.O.d a lot of fast movers in my tank first. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

And how about this:

I'm in a LaGG-3 1941 at "Sky of valuor" serve, being chased by a BF-109:

He made a very good shot, and flamed me:
http://vinaanh.com/images0/44861/f/48e997322f80b_f.JPG

A few seconds after that, my engineer had stopped. That guy closed in to finish, but this time he missed:

Some Red planes had came around, he avoided me, level to base. I try to give him a few bursts and pray:

The usual chatter on TS, but when This (8MB) (http://www.vanjast.com/IL2Movies/LongShot.avi) shot occurred there was a long silence. I was more surprised than the victim..

This forum has seen screenshots of more than 1 km single shot Mk 108, P-39, and Yak cannon kills.

Might as caption with "Hold still, smile and say cheesed!".

I'm with you Chevy350, can't hit squat! I suspect the twist grip rudder on my Microsoft Sidewinder joystick. I love it for flying, but when it comes to shooting, I seem to always tweek just a bit too much rudder in as I'm squeezing the trigger, and off go the rounds into space... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Someday I'll get rudder peddals, I think it'll help. That and Track IR. Maybe then I'll actually be able to track enemies and be comfortable enough to get online! I saw how quickly some of those guys on YouTube were panning. They had to have some sort of tracking system; no way they're doing it with the keyboard, which is all I have.

Poofing fighters with the IL2-M3 is fun! Hehehe! (And I love the Red/White/Blue paint scheme; nice change from the usual.)

By the way, you guys that do videos, do you always start a track when you fly, or is there some way to capture a track post fact?

Depends what you want to capture.. I usually start recording as soon as I see 'ze enemy', and finish when the action stops ~ usually about 3-5 minutes worth. One ends up with a lot of ntrks to play around with.

Yo Phantomkira:
Theres a good way to look around other than TrackIR. Just use your mouse http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif . I kid you not because I still use this set up after 4 years...

My setup is like this:
righthand mouse for look around, mousewheel-throttle, RMB for toggle gunsight and LMB for toggle FOV.

Lefthand joystick with all weaponsystems and wheelbrake

Rest is keyboard (trim etc), conveniently located near my righthand (numpad functions)

homemade rudderpedals are the cherry on the top

It takes some practice to fly the aircraft and use your righthand-lookaround at the same time without uncontrolled movement but once you get it wil bring you on par with TIR. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
It's like playing piano mate, ambidextrous.

IF I have the money I will get TIR though http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thanks McHilt, that sounds like a good idea... except that Cessna 172s don't have guns! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, unlike RL Cessna 172 (left hand yoke, right hand throttle/mixture/flaps/radios/etc,etc), I have to fly with my right in the sim. Not only is it what I'm used to after years and years of flight simming, it's the way it should be (stick in your right, throttle in your left... unless it's yoke in your left, throttle in your right). Additionally, the Microsoft Sidewinder joystick I have is ergonomically designed for right hand use. Using it left handed would be exceedingly uncomfortable, and button locations making their use all but impossible. (It has a built in ledge for right hand thumb.)

How do you go about homemade rudder pedals? I'd assume some sort of computer linkup would be required, I'm just not sure how to translate rotational motion into electronic computerspeak.

No money right now, well, not to spend on that anyway... I've been wanting rudder pedals for a long time, so it's a question of TIR or pedals. I'm seriously considering TIR first, as I do have pedal function right now.

One more question for those who are in the know: What's the best way to get maximum economy out of an aircraft engine, etc? I'm reading a book in Spitfires, and they say "[Mk Vbs] ...one hour and fifteen-minute sorties were the norm for 1941-1942, although I did crack one hour and thirty minutes on several occasions, and came home very "dry". The furthest inland we would dare go on an escort mission was Paris, and even then you had to manage the Merlin just right to ensure a frugal fuel intake - [my italics] weak mixture, power set to cruise, full throttle to achieve low revs and coarse pitch on the propeller.

I've done some experimenting, and I've figured best pitch at somewhere 75-95%, using pitch to determine RPMs, but what's best for long range? Also, what in the world does he mean by "power set for cruise, full throttle"?

Thanks all!

Holy Sheeyit.
That is a good shot.
He shoots like me; 1/2 second burst, far-away deflection shot.
Thats a KI84 I think doing the shooting.
Wow, what a shot. Almost looks unbelievable, but it did go kboom.

A good one to try is an F4U1D with TinyTim missles at a bomber a long way off.
It's a pain.
I have not hit the bomber yet.

Yeah, I recall regualarly scoring hits at 500-600 metres online in the Lagg 3IT. Usually people silly enough to think at 500 metres its OK to fly straight and level.

My convergence in big cannon yaks used to be set at 400 so I used to center the ball and aim one tailfin height above the target for every 150 metres or so past convergence. The IT seemed better at long range sniping than the K.

The seriously awesome sniping plane is the 190A8 with the "in wing" mk108 or mk103 pods. offline you can consistently down bombers from the straight 6 at 600 or 700 metres once you get your eye in.
