View Full Version : How spoiled are we...?

Uru was released in November of 2003.

Myst 4 was released in late September of 2004.

Now we get Myst 5 in Fall 2005.

That's one each year. (Not including Uru's expansion packs.)

Cyan has spoiled us, and now they'll have to keep it up... a new game every year for the rest the Ages.

Or... or... else we shall... er... be very... put out!

Infocom released fantastic text adventure games at a rate of 5-8 per year for 7 years straight. THAT was being spoiled! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, Uru is extremely well-made in the area of expandable content. It would think it'd be relatively (that is, in comparison to the average game) easy for them to add new content, as they did with Uru and its expansions...

...now making the content, that's gonna take time and effort...

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing smaller games (around the size of Uru's expansions) released every 6-12 months. If it works particularly well economically for Cyan, it might be a good way to leverage the investment into the Uru engine into some nice profits and some room to experiment again. I see Myst V as an excellent use of this strategy. I'm very much looking forward to getting another Cyan-made Myst game. (Don't get me wrong, I liked Exile and Revelation, but Riven's still my fave!)

Ditto Apogee - one of the wierdest turnarounds we've ever seen. They released about 30 or more games in the early-to-mid 90s.
I was just thinking about this earlier today - what have they done since Duke 3D? About 3 or 4 games. Pity the Duke fans... 3D Realms started making Duke Nukem Forever in 1996!!!
BEFORE RIVEN
And they're still going. Since that time, we've had: Riven, RealMyst, Exile, Uru, POTS, Revelation, and soon Myst V.

(For anyone who's confused, Apogee = 3D Realms).

So, yeah we are spoiled. But keep in mind we've had three companies working on it, and POTS and Myst V are reusing content made for Uru. The game Uru itself took 6 years to make, and some of this extra content was made during that time.

Don't expect anymore Myst stuff after V.

We are spoiled for sure! But I like being spoiled.

I would like to remind those who have seemed bummed about the title End of Ages. Here is a post from Rawa focusing on a different part. Many of us have seen this post that Rawa made on the Lyst in the last day or so because it showed Myst V and SE as being different which we verified that it was so. Now read the other part that comes into play about this being the last Myst game.

quote:
I hesitate to chime in on this. This is the fourth time I've started
to respond to this thread, only to delete my reply without sending it.

But I wanted to say that K'laamas' point here is a good one.

I'll also point out that Cyan's slogan "You never know..." applies
here as well as anywhere. For those keeping score at home, remember
that Riven was "absolutely the final Myst game", and that Rand said he
didn't ever want to play Atrus after Riven (and said that again after
Myst III and said it yet again after Myst IV.) We meant those things
at the time we said them, but things happen and time changes things.

With all that being said, after working on Myst related things for
almost 13 straight years, frankly, I'm ready to try Something Else(TM).

It sounds like the end of Myst and Uru to me.....although I'd love to proven wrong.
After Myst V, where am I to get my Myst "fix" I ask you?
I mean there really aren't any other "Myst-like" games out there that I'm aware of. I've been looking, but there's nothing.
Other good adventure games I've played are "The Longest Journey" and "Beyond Atlantis II", but they're not really as "Myst-like, as I'd like.
I need a continuous dosage of Myst, administered on a fairly regular basis!

This is indeed a very good time to be a Myst fan.

I wonder if "Something Else"(TM) could be similar to the Myst series......then perhaps the ending has been written as a new beginning!

OK, I don't follow the Lyst like I probably should - but do I understand this correctly??

End of Ages is NOT the "Something Else" we've been hearing about?

Rawa explained more in detail so here it is:

quote:
A little inside info, since I was the one who started "Something
Else"" back in May...

Bill is right on the money.

If you want to look back in the archives at the end of May, you'll see
that folks were trying to figure out if we were going to be doing more
Uru expansion packs after TPotS. I answered that we were working on
"Something Else" as way to say, "No, our next project will not be
another Uru X-pack" without giving any specific information about any
of the projects that we had in development. I wasn't just talking
about "Sasquatch" (Myst V's codename which you discovered a few months
later).

Now that Myst V has been officially announced, you can see how
"Something Else" was accurate for that project in the context of not
being another expansion for Uru, and with the other information in the
announcement you can probably also see that "Something Else" was even
more appropriate for the other projects we have in development (which
will remain mysteries a while longer).

You'll have to stay tuned for news of "Something Else Entirely" and
"Something Completely Different".

RAWA

I would ask that if you want to discuss Something Else to please do so Here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=frm&s=400102&f=999103134). The above quote from Rawa is posted there and we are using that forum section to discuss, theorize, and speculate about SE. Hope to see you over there. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Surely by now you knew that the goal of every Cyan employee was to drive you mentally insane. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif That's the only thing that can explain what they do isn't it.
I mean I know that RAWA has sent the penguins after me I'm always looking out for them. Sometimes I wonder if they are gonna sneak up behind me and... THWAP!

Well, I've been a great fan from the first release of Myst (some 13(?) years ago)
So actually...
Myst, Riven, Myst 3, UrU (not counting add-ons) and Myst 4 Revelation is only an average of 1 game every 2.6 years... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

But I do agree. If Myst 5 is released this year, then yes, we have been spoiled the last 3 years.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but has anyone even considered that Myst V may face delays? After all, unless they are quite a ways along in development, there might be some last minute pitfalls that will delay things.

I loved URU, however the last expansion pack had some bugs that were hard to work around . . and I would rather them release the game when it's ready, not when it's ready for beta testing.

I always convince myself that ANY game I'm waiting for, including all things 'Myst', will be released at least 1 to 2 months later than the date announced. That way, I get a great surprise if it is on time - and if it isn't? Well, I always expect delays, so it lessens the disappoimtment. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

"I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by."--Douglas Adams.

I usually expect delays as well, but I think this one will be spot on for some reason.

I think Something Else may be something similar to URU or a sequel to URU (can they really sequel URU, though? It's kinda like an expanding game isnt it?)

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Apparently, they plan on having the game completed sometime this Spring. Ubisoft doesn't plan to release it until the Fall... probably to pick up pre-Christmas sales.

This gives Cyan lots of extra time in between to tweak, optimize, and debug.

I think PotS was rushed because they had already shifted their development to Myst V.
