Ha, ha.

I was watching that Entarde take off from that carrier and I was thinking, "wow, that's one hell of a pilot doing that insane yo-yoing with a jet straight off the catapult" and then he ejected. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Wow! Obviously I need some help here. How do you simply insert a link rather than the full url? Thanks. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

In the upper part of your posting window there's a bar with icons -for smileys, etc. Use the third one. There you can put the URL, and even substitute it by a text to replace it on screen. That will generate a link.

Whatever you may say about the French military, the FAF seems to produce the finest aviation videos in the world!

My favourite is that stunning cinematic quality one called "The Chase" with the Alphajet/Mirage 2000 combat over the alps. Just amazing. Patricks aviation used to host it but I've not seen it up for a while (it's 150Mb... I have it on the HDD but can't host a file that size).

Wow. Thanks.

Never heard of that one - I guess it's French language only as I couldn't locate it on any international DVD sites. It's here (http://www.amazon.fr/Les-Chevaliers-ciel-G%e9rard-Pires/dp/B000EQHT2M/sr=8-1/qid=1157319802/ref=pd_ka_1/403-4668035-1708468?ie=UTF8&s=gateway) on amazon.fr.

Shame I don't speak French, anyone know if it's subtitled (or indeed any good, bar the exceptional air-to-air cinematography)?

Ah, good old Babelfish...

Aeronautical living room of Farnborough. A Mirage 2000 disappears in full demonstration. French military control sends the Captains Antoine Marchelli and Sebastien Vallois, patrols some above the North Sea, towards the zone where the 2000 disappeared from the radarscopes. The two pilots discover the 2000 dissimulated under a A340 Airbus. The 2000 is put in position of combat. At the same time, Marchelli and Vallois receive the order to give up the continuation without delay. But it is too late, the 2000 is about to cut down Vallois; Marchelli descends it to protect its team-member. This incident is the starting point of a gigantic handling, aiming to the diversion of a French fighter to fine terrorists...

They fought valiantly over the history, then there is Napoeon, but I have nothing against if they leave fighting, and concentrate on their exellent food, vines and spirits. And let me concentrate on their sharmante ladies. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Well now with the some new rig i fell in love with lockon/flaming Cliff and been flying on it .. it basicly pull me away 90 % from il2.
By playing lockon i have a hard time coming back on il2 everything seemse way too sluggish and simplistic. You should give it a try...

Evrything we asked or dream to be on il2 Lockon has it.

Good find, that video: my respect for the French climbed a fair bit. They're damned good engineers: I'd like to see Dassault with the resources of McDonnell Douglas or Lockheed Martin, because the F-15 and many other US jets are fantastic, the F-22 looks like a real world beater, but when you think the RAAF is screaming for Rafales over F-22 Raptors, it says something about the impact the Mirages had on them, no?

The Yanks have given you lot an option on F-22s? I thought you were holding out for the F-35? Rafale's a very nice plane but it's no Typhoon,

USA wasn't gonna sell the F-4, either http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The way I see it, if Australia says "Hey, can we buy 60 F-22s?" the USA will say yes, for the same reason as with the M1 Abrams we bought: the USA gets the money from the sale, we maintain the Armoured unit, and they get 60 extra tanks they didn't have to maintain in the event of another war. Sure, it's not 100% that simple: I heard the staff in Canberra did a study and realised Australia couldn't assist in land operations in North Korea in the event it came to that, because our forces are totally incompatible for that sort of operation. On the other hand, there are SAS in Afghanistan right now, and more regs are being sent to Iraq tonight (there'll be nobloody left in the bases at this rate, no exaggeration) so apparently our forces aren't totally useless to the US. Plus, buying M1s didn't make much sense for Australia to use ourselves: Afghanistan, Iraq, Solomons, East Timor, Vietnam, the Army never deployed tanks (they did use M113s). The M1s are too heavy for operations in the Oceania area (what tanks aren't?) and the last deployment of Australian Armoured units was WWII, considering the conflicts we've been involved in since, that says they're not there in the same role as Black Hawks or M113s. And the F-18 Hornets we have, I don't believe any have actually operated in combat. So my reasoning is that if Australia asked, it's strategically pretty savvy to have Australia with a harder-hitting force, and it strengthens ties.

Australia put $113M US (from memory) into the F-35A program. A while back an inquiry was launched into why we were buying the F-35A, because the F-22's better and barely any more expensive for us. I'm not sure how it panned out or if it's still going, but the key point is that regardless of availablity, the RAAF still wants Rafales.

Oh and, the Typhoon comment had me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Rafale is a nice aircraft but it's still a distant capability cousin of Typhoon or F22.

Having said that, if you forget the need for day-one stealth, which really isn't a priority for anything other than a high-tech no-holds barred war in which the US are liable to be leading the charge anyway, I think practically any nation would be better off buying a shed-load of Rafales or Gripens, and putting the (huge) savings into extra airframes and some heavy lift (how the RAF could use some more C17s...) rather than the F-35 white elephant.

Given the furore over F35 technology transfer on an airframe programme designed for global sales, I'd be surprised if the US agreed to sell F22 to other nations anytime soon.

Although I'm sure it'll come with time.. I had heard Japan were potential buyers of a "doctored" export version also.

Much as I think the French are good engineers, I'm not saying I'd rather be in a Rafale than F-22. The main reasons I got were:

- Available "today"
- Two seater version (some think 2 seat is better)
- Apparently they liked the Mirages better than the F-18s
- Easier to maintain

About heavy lift as a side note: the RAAF has supposedly 24 Hercs, but apparently most are actually hulks that were cannabalised for parts to keep SIX flying. That would almost certainly be an exaggeration, though I've seen a few Hercs lining a RAAF strip without engines or doors. The C-17s are desperately wanted here, too.

As for whether to by Gripens or Typhoons or Rafales compared to the F-35, well, I guess it depends on where a country sees itself in 20 years time. Will the PRC start trouble (unlikely, but then the Falklands weren't supposed to happen either), will there be more ops in places like Iraq, in which case, you're right, a bunch of Blackburn Buccaneers would be as good as F-35s for pounding stuff flat while the USAF keeps the skies clear with reams of F-22s. It's all about planning really. Personally I'd favour buying fewer high tech, simply because of things like the Falklands where it was anticipated that the UK would ALWAYS have NATO support. What if, for some reason, the RAAF doesn't have the USAF backing?

As for whether the USA would ever sell the F-22, well, your guess is as good as mine. I'd like to think that the fact Australia pretty much hasn't said no to the USA since December 7th 1941 would count for something. Again, the F-4 Phantom wasn't supposed to be sold, but it was. Sure, it's a little different, but it seems to me that by 2008 it wouldn't be that unlikely the USA would be ready to sell the F-22 overseas to one of its closest allies.
