Did nobody ever try to stick a Merlin (or even a griffon) engine into the P40/Tommahawk instead of the relatively weak Allison motor?

Surely that would have greatly increased its performance. Not enough merlins to go round or something?

The Merlin (done under license by the Packard Motorcar Company of Detroit), the V-1650-1, was used in the P-40F model.

Models F and L. Successive models reverted to the Allison, since the Packard Merlin were earmarked for the P-51.
