Have tried the beta for a couple of days now. Cool stuff, surely, but they should un-moronize those bloody bots regardless. Yeah, yeah, it's an online game surely... but nevertheless, what use is an offline practice mode against total cretins I ask???

Did this problem start after yesterday's steam update?
If so, I had exactly the same problem and it was caused by 1 of the files in the update being corrupted. I found the solution which worked for me on the steam forum. PatrickM's reply (in post #271) worked for me, here's a link to it;
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=...15b&t=564395&page=19 (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=2009b8dbf0234788e62a7a07e2aea15b&t=564395&page=19)

If the link doesn't work here's what he suggested;

Exit Steam, then go to the C:\Program Files\Steam directory (this is the default with a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it), and delete all of the files except for:

Steam.exe

And the folder:

\SteamApps\

Then restart Steam. Report back on the results here."

What this does is when you restart steam it will re-download the updates etc. and repair itself. 1 word of warning though, doing the above will delete your profile from the steam directory so make sure you can remember your steam login name and password because you'll need to log back into steam after. Also do not delete the steamapps folder or you will lose any games you have running through steam. Hope this helps and good luck.

*EDIT*
There has also been a fix released today to repair the damage caused by yesterday's update.

"I sent in a support request. This is the response I received. I tried this before, and it didn't work. But I did it again after getting this, and all is fine now. Problem solved... for me at least

Quote:
Hello Marcus,
I believe this issue was directly related to yesterday's update. The cause has been isolated and resolved. To pickup the fix, please restart Steam. If Steam fails to start before attempting to update, navigate to your Steam folder and delete the ClientRegistry.blob, Steam.dll, and SteamUI.dll. This will force Steam to update.

If the issue persists, let me know."

I'd try this 1st before my 1st suggestion.

I play RO from time to time,just for fun.The way this patch was handled impressed me.They said there would be a patch,shortly after that they released a beta patch,and shortly after that they released the patch.No fuss,no drama.Just good communication.
