I love this sim but it really made me see red this morning. I spent a 2+ hours shadowing a convoy, eluded the escort, popped up alongside 4 cargo ships, fired all my torpedeos... just as the first 1 is about to strike its target the game crashed back to the desktop... And stupid me, 3 days into the mission with 2 kills already had not bothered to save...

Going to take a while before I will want to play this game again.

I feel your pain. Save often. I save after reaching patrol area, enemy encounters and after each attack on allied shipping.

Wouldn't you rather see if you can resolve the problem so that it won't happen again.

My guess is it's an audio related problem. What audio adapter do you have? Are its drivers up-to-date? Did you try lowering the audio adapter's HARDWARE ACCELERATION slider setting a notch or 2 in Windows' Conntrol Panel?

Or it might be graphics related? Similar questions:

What graphics adapter do you have? What graphics drivers are you using for your adapter?

No other games ever crash. And seen I crashed just as a torpedo was about to explode I say it was something to do with the games programing.
Card is a XT850XT PE with latest drivers
Sound card is a Audigy 2 with latest drivers.

If we didn't want to experience the horros of a crash then we wouldn't have become Windows users. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Well other people have resolved very similar issues by dealing with their audio adapter or drivers.

And many people experience problems with one game and not another. Funkasoar is correct. The hardware and software variables in a Windows machine are so great that often problems can be almost unique, with a certain mix of those variables.

You may not like to do it but have you tried lowering your Audigy's HARDWARE ACCELERATION setting, as I suggested before? This often resolves audio related crash problems and not just in SH3.

I feel your pain - I just had two CTD (posted earlier looking for help) and both cost me several lost hours of play. I am running a patched game, no mods, dvd in the drive, defragged machine with 1gb of RAM, up to date drivers - and have NEVER had a crash with any software on this machine before. I'm hoping moving audio to a soundcard and off the mobo will help.

The only thing that has ever caused me to crash was using the crew macro management buttons (the one's on the lower right of the crew managment screen).

After I discovered that bug, I've never used them again. I just manually put each crewmember where I want them, I don't mind, gives me a chance to know my crew!

I definitely has helped others. Hopefully that's your problem.

Have you tried lowering the audio chipset's HARDWARE ACCELERATION setting in the meantime?

I had to do that on my noetbook for other games, prior to getting SH3.

In however many months I've had the game, I've only experienced three crashes. As other posters have recommended, save early, save often.

I also had problems with this game CTD'ing on me, usually before a torpedo hit.
It was only this game I had problems with too. I was ready to pull my hair out. I couldn't even get through the training missions because of it.
I solved my problem when I updated my motherboard bios. There was one newer bios available and the changes from the one I had to the newer one should not have made a difference (whatever they were, I don't remember now)Any how that totally solved my problem. I haven't had a crash since.
Don't overlook anything. It most likely is something very simple.

It had exactly the same problem.

But my game didnt crashed to the desktop , my whole system rebooted without any warning.

The only other game i knew the same hard crashes from was Operation Flashpoint. It took me a very long time to figure out what the problem was.

A bug in Direct X caused the crashes , but only with my type of graphic card (the manufacturer , not the chip! ) .

My entire system rebooted when a special explosion effect in OFP was rendered.

I didnt had the bug before it came with a new version of directx that was released after ive played OFP for a few months. Dont ask me which one this was http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The strange thing was that it didnt happened every time... i could see the same explosion 3 or 4 times but as the fifth tank exploded and i was in "seeing range" klick ! reboot.

The same happened to me in SH3 but here i couldnt figure out what the trigger was.

I had that crew management crash bug also but this was another problem.

Changing all drivers couldnt fix the problem.
But something i never would had imagined fixed the crashes....

Ive installed the RUB Mod http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

No crashes anymore since then. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Dont know what RUB fixed but this crash trigger isnt existend anymore.

Hey Celeon You can prevent windows xp from restarting itself on errors

Right on click my computer

Click the 'Advanced' tab

In 'start up and recovery' click the settings button

Under 'system faliure' UNCHECK the box marked 'automatically restart'.

Click OK

Now your pc will no longer restart on errors, if the error is serious, you might get a blue screen instead, but thats more useful than a restart since it gives you an error code you can look up on google, to find out whats going wrong.

Going to take a while before I will want to play this game again. Ther is however, the other side of the coin.

Wait until you get attached to a boat and crew. You are the conquerors! Medals, renown and tonnage fairly drip off your boat. One night you attack a convoy, supremely confident but get DC'd to hell and back by elite crewed Armed Trawlers. Not to mention the "Flower" corvette allergies abounding. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Then the Liberator bombers join in. Hull is 10%. The death screen is imminent. Suddenly - CTD.

Thank God! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

CTD.

I WISH!!!!!!!!!!!

My machine locks right up solid. Sometimes my ATI VPU recover fix's things but 90% of the time I am toast.

I had a rock solid never crashed game when I was Win2k but stupid me I upgraded. I can't go back to 2k and XP just won't run the game. Sigh.

My SH3 game play has droped off 90% since my upgrade, but on other news I started eating and sleeping again.

I was experiencing the crashes up until the point where I was on my way to make my 100k patrol for the first time and crashed to desktop.. Granted, I was on the darn computer for more than 4 + hours on the patrol. So I decided to give the game a rest and then I began to save the game in the middle or somewhere in the point where I felt I was playing too long..
I save the game, reboot and start over on the mission where I left off.. Still no 100K officers club yet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif.

What do you mean "XP just won't run the game?" I would bet your problem is definetely not OS related.

Never had a crash yet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif **Touch wood**

I always use the drivers i recieved with the product and never update drivers. I find updating drivers causes all sorts of problems and crashes in games, graphics glitches.

I only ever update if i have a problem, which so far has not happened.

I have a 9600xt saphire with the drivers from the cd in the box, and a soundblaster live value with the drivers off the CD. Both are perfect!

Remember though that you can run all your software perfectly and then suddenly find a game which crashes. It doesnt mean its the games fault, it just means the game is intensive enough to find the fault with your computer which no other game has found.

There are all sorts of test programmes out there to find the fault with your computer and stress test it.

It has to be in part OS realated even if it is just different drivers for the new OS. That is all I changed, the OS. Though now I have changed a lot more in efforts to fix things. I have a new idea but I am really shooting blind. I have no idea what the issue is.
