View Full Version : Early to Mid war maps

G'day all,
Firstly I would like to say from the start I prefer the 1st half of the war plane sets (39-43) to the latter (44-45).
Before I get howls of protest as to why the latter war planes are better I would like to just put my reasons for this preference.

The main reasons are that in the earlier plane sets we tend to get great dogfighting with the axis b&z of the faster 109 and 190s really showing out.Yet they still can fight in the horizontal plane if they are good enough.

To be succesful as an allied you need good team work and a good feel for your planes turning abilities.

Those who prefer to fly bombers can still get a map that lets them have a sporting chance of surviveing a mission .

What I find I like least about the later war maps is that the dogfights are no where near as enjoyable, with the Axis if they are smart staying high and fast and the allies on the whole trying to catch them so we get more hit and run tactics,(I personaly dont like these)
that tend to just end up being a map with lots of chases and little dogfighting except for the manditory furball that always happens at 1-2000m.
Dont get me wrong if I fly the axis 'boomers' then the tactics I will use are exactly those of in and out FAST.
Besides the facts that the latter era planes are superior performers to their predicessors why is it that most servers seem to favour the latter war years and almost completely disreguard the early war plane sets?

I understand that a 109k has performance far exceeding the 109F but I still love the 109F in the appropriate plane set this plane holds most the cards.
I just find that we seem to lose sight of the developement of the planes through the war and just seem to go for 1944-45 palnes far to often.
Thoughts anyone?

I wholeheartedly agree. The earlier planesets seem to lend themselves to the "desperation" of the tide-of-war. You're just not sure who has the advantage. In terms of this game, yes, I prefer the parity the earlier planesets offer as well. One of the best matchups is the mig3/I-16 vs 109E/F and later the La5 vs 190A.

Two of my favs.

Early and mid war maps are better by a LOT.

First of all, the planes are more interesting. They have good and bad points, and are not all optimized, with one-hit-and-yer-dead weaponry like the late war planes. You get much more of an appreciation for real-world tactics when you have less-than-perfect planes.

Also, more of the plane set is usable when you don't have the entire sky darkened with La7s, Yak3s, Mk108 109Ks and cannon Corsairs.

I suppose that is the jist of my post ,That is that it takes alot of concentration to down an enemy with the firepower of the early planes which makes the dogfighting rather intense as I see it.

Agree 100% with everything you say, but the above is the clincher for me: flying Ju87s vs P-51s, B-25s vs late Fws, Betties vs. P-47s, SBDs vs Ki-84s is mad. If you're spotted, you're dead.

Think of the TB-3. On most online maps I see it going against late 109s and Fw190s! Not a chance. Imagine how much fun it would be to have TB-3s + I-15 escorts vs. Buffaloes and Gladiators? Now THAT would be an interesting challenge for both sides.

Overall balance tends to be better early war, you get to fly biplanes, dogfights are (personally speaking) more fun, and the planeset is just more interesting and more balanced.

I much prefer the early war, maybe mid if you call New Guinea in 1943 "mid."

I tend to not bother flying if it's late war, myself, but one difference with stig I have is that if I actually flew a late war map, I could see flying a cannon armed F4U simply because virtually all the enemy will be flying Franks running on 100 octane, maybe with 30mm guns. The whole dogfight map concept doesn;t lend itrself to realistic parameters of engagement, so those kooky matchups are bound to happen (if I'm flying IJA late war, I'm the guy in the oscar putting a bullet through your head when you try to turn fight me in a Spit LXXXXVIIII ;-)

I can see just logging off that server (as I often do when I find it loaded with "mopup Corsairs" and Franks that were likely grounded due to material shortages (not to mention pilots).

Its not just that; but the last time i checked the heavy servers they offered allied and axis planes for blue and red. Just goofy. fun for some. Last time i look at wildcat v zero they were offering F4Us...I dont log on...I like Oscars v P40. Biplane wars are fun too.

I also prefer early stuff to the later aircraft, but think it's more a question of getting the historical matchups right in the first place when designing a mission. It's not hard, just do a little research, see what was used at the time of your scenario. As for bombers, give them a chance by having no icons and reward them well (high value targets) if they get their objectives.

I'm gonna make one of these tonight!

I want to have fairly short flight times, TB-3's, J8a's, I-16 Type 18's (Maybe even some Hurri MkIIb's) for allied and CR42's, Stukas and possibly G50's and B-239's for Axis.

I may exclude the Type 18's as I don't want any rockets flying at the bombers. Those rockets are just too much of an equalizer. Also have the bases stoutly guarded by AA to discourage those circling carrion eaters.

Oh yeah, and I'm going to go hang out at greatergreen and wait for that plane set! Thunderbolt, you guys are the best place to go for fun plane matchups--keep up the good work. You still have the Polish map going?

Mate I will be there hope it gets populated as I am getting a bit tired with continuous late war battles ,not to say they are not fun just abit the same all the time.
Thx again.
wish I had the resources to host would love to do the same. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
