"One day, our project officer's Komet 163 was fueled up and ready to fly when three Me 109s came over the field in a single line formation. I was among 30 pilots watching from the ground. Sp├┬Ąte took off and was immediately upon them; we all saw that he easily could have picked them off. They tried to come behind him, but with his extra power and agility, he was soon behind each of them. Everybody was terribly excited to see what you could do with the new plane."

The Komet will put an end to Luftwhining for ever. It is so far ahead of every other plane.

Salute

Wonder if they will model the very large percentage chance of an accident and the tendency to explode/digest their pilot... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Funny how the Luftwaffe Generals in charge considered them a complete waste of money and would have much preferred the money and pilots were diverted to the Me262 project instead.

Well a fuel leak from bomber defensive fire may be a little more scary in the Komet!

Buzz re generals: I don't think they full appreciated how good the Komet was. It was a whole new concept.

That's probably true, Ian. Or rather, it's true until the rocket fuel runs out /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

Does anyone know what's the burn time for the engine?

Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to flying this one.

Regards,

RocketDog.

Lol,
Am not sure how long the fuel lasted for other than it was a matter of minutes but I do know that the fuel used was so volatile that they had to keep the 2 parts of the catalyst at opposite ends of the airfield. Brilliant plane? Anybody who got in it deserved a medal in the first place!

it was a whole new thing, yes. What was the British rocket fighter in the 50s that lost out to Starfighter?

But in reality the 163 was a bit of a waste of time in terms of its effectiveness on bombers and lack of range. If B17s didn't happen to fly over 163 base, they stayed on the ground.

But it was very very fast and if for that reason alone will be fun to pounce on stream of bombers. It'll climb like a rocket (oh I geddit, it IS a rocket) too.

Only to be replaced by VVSwhining which has had less reason to exist. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

With every new flyable release (not to mention each patch), it is always interesting to see how the bird flies in comparison with what has been written of it. The biggest problem with the Komet will be the very short targeting and firing opportunities afforded by extreme closure speeds. After that, its vulnerability during glide return to the airfield.

Sounds like the perfect 133t plane for a dogfight server: w1ck3d fast, g00d gunz, decent turn. Landing and accident rate no major issues for that type of play.

It had a landing skid didnt it?

yes but plans were afoot to give it undercarriage but afaik that variant did not see service.

I have a question for somebody who has good information about those rocket interceptors like Me-163 and Bi-1: could the pilot start and stop the engine in midair as many times as he wishes? without dangers? Because I do this now in Bi-1 and it can be quite good (the only thing that hampers it are its ineffectiveness of controls at slow speeds and weak armament).

Also Bi-1 has two throttle settings, are those real? I'm asking this because Me-163 engine was modified with 2 combustion chambers for gaining this. Or have I misunderstand something and Me-163B has the nominal and max power settings also?

5:30min on 100% power. It took 3:50 to climb up to the roof, somewhere around 12500m. Then 2min left... if you just use 50% then, it's 4min. and you need that for some BnZ attacks.

Then main advantage over the BI-1 should be it's armament and high speed handling (which suxx on the BI-1, try it). And there's no "nose-down" above 750 IAS. It will reach at least 800 on the deck for sure... if not 900-1000 max speed there.

I really lokk forward to flying that little power-egg /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif . I also use the BI for ground attacks... those extremely fast & rocket climbing weapons are ideal for taking out AAA. Get in fast, kick @$$ and get out fast. They have very little time for aiming... And the 2 30mm cannons (60rpg) should be enough to shred some cars or planes on the ground /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .
