Greetings.

We finished up our review of the TrackIR 2 this afternoon and I just got it uploaded to our server.

If you are a TrackIR user or interested in purchasing a TrackIR, I recommend you read this review.

There are screenshots of the new Version 3.00 software in the review, as well as pictures I have taken of the new unit. They show the new LED, the case glow feature, and the new metal stand.

Interesting!

But is the improvement of the TrackIR2's 100FPS also noticable on 60FPS flatscreens?
Have you tested it yourself or do you know of anyone that have?

We tested the TrackIR2 on a flat panel screen. Give me a few hours and I will get the exact model but I know it is a one of the Dell models. We saw a good improvement on all three of the systems we ran it on, including the flat panel system.

Remember that the fps of the TrackIR2 and the monitor you use have nothing to do with each other. The 100 fps for the TrackIR 2 simply means that it scans 100 times per second. So it has 100 reference points on your head location per second. This translates to the game to let it know where to pan.

Now, if your graphics are choppy without the TrackIR, the will still be choppy with it, regardless. The 100 fps for the TIR2 does not effect the FPS you get from your video card / monitor setup. Two completely different animals.

No matter what, you will still see a major improvement with the TrackIR 2. All of the beta testers and our company noticed this on all of our systems. So, it has been tested over a wide variety of components.

D@MMIT! I knew I would hear something like this and want it. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

My question again is..."What type of improvement can I expect with the new software and a first generation device?"

If the answer is detailed in the Naturalpoint forums, then disregard...I'm heading there now.

Ok, its like this...

When you are panning around with tir1, even if your video card does 1,000 fps, you'll notice blurring of the screen. This is because tir1 is only updated 60 times per second. Assume you pan quickly from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock. There are only 60 distinct "views" between 12 and 6, but only when you take a full second to pan.

During a fight, you pan much more quickly. From 12 to 6, you may pan in 1/4 second. There are only 15 "steps" from 12 to 6 if you pan in 1/4 second. You see blurring/ jerkiness at this pan rate. If you slowly pan, you have up to 60 "steps" from 12 to 6, which equates to smoother camera movement.

If we up-it to 100fps sampling, and do the same test, you'll get 25 samples between 12 and 6 (when panning at 1/4 second).

As I said, it does not matter how many FPS your video card can create. If your camera control can only input positional data 60 times per second, your video card can only update the camera position 60 times per second. You'll get high FPS with a hot-rod video card, but view-changes are only drawn when there is input.

Tir2 should allow much smoother panning.

You guys forget the other benefit of faster refreshing is an improved response time!

There is even less need for "smoothing" now with TIR2 since the motion lag is reduced considerably. That alone is worth the price of admission and FAR more useful than a less choppy panning motion.

So Ok I finally will buy one of these...but let me ask you is the installation easy or do you need a degree in computer gaming to do it???I briefly had TrackIR 1 & the 3d glasses( trying to install these was a real exercise in not being able to get there from here...) & the instructions for installing & tuning the TrackIR device took up a whole booklet!I thought I might want to download NEW VIEw, but it toohad so many different instuctions on fine tuning , I could only think this is really a way to screw up my game...So can you simply install TrackIR2 & choose default & play?

Thx for the response BaldieJr, but this still doesn't address my question.

If I keep my TrackIR 1st generation device (NOT TIR2!) and use the new software version (3.01?) I've been told there are nice improvements to be realized. What are they?

Hi, nice review.

I have a trackIR of the first generation, and I must say that this is truly a nice piece of technology.

The TIR2 seems even better, and I would like to order one, but does anyone know if edimensional also sells that TrackHat ? could see it only at naturalpoint.com.

Why ? because I also would like to buy those e-glasses. Does anyone got those ? do they work good ?

thx

Asked eDimensional the very same thing myself, answer was...

"We don't include the free hat, but our prices are about $13 lower. If you want one, we can have one shipped to you from the US for the $13 plus a few dollars for shipping. "

There ya go.

It seems to require less smoothing, which means finer control. Also, I seem to 're-center' far less with the new software.

Its no monumental improvement, but it is a bit better than before.

Yeah. Those arguments were all in relationship to other available pointing devices which I will name now...

Umm. Er, well. Nevermind.

Sure, it could use higher sampling (200 hz would be fantastic), but all in all, its a great piece of hardware.

You'll love it.

The degree always helps. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Install the software, plug it in, and go flying. That easy.

There are multiple built in settings you can use or you can customize your own profile. To really get in depth on a fully customized profile, it takes time and experimenting.

But you can get up flying in no time and be very happy with the results.

I get stutter from a POV hat. So, your not really making a huge point here.

TrackIR has always been better than using the POV and it is even better now.

The stutter from the TIR1 is because it was a much slower imager AND had a few minor issues with the smoothing on the y-axis.

All is fixed now. Much better.

Ach, RBJ, it was/still is a great product that you've never used and hence have no knowledge of. It looks just as smooth on my system as panning with the mouse or hat, and it's a whole lot more natural.

Now... does anyone know, the above aside, if Naturalpoint offer any sort of discount incentive for current TiR users? I'm a technology junky and if they can offer me a compelling reason to upgrade I probably will, it always did look like a great gizmo, but now it's BLUE. Etc.

Cheers,

SSS

PS. Hope to fly a Mustang (a real one) next week. Will let you know how it goes if it works out (and take a load of pictures).

RBJ, you are on crack I swear, but I'm not going to waste words on how fecked up your reasoning is. We'll look forward with anticipation of your review of TIR2 however.

SpinSpinSugar, looking forward to the pics. As for a rebate or special pricing I'm sure they are offering something of the sort but I can't recall exactly. Just drop an e-mail to Jim Richardson over at Natural Point.

cheers

I do not beleive they are going to offer any incentive to upgrade. Just the better system should be enough! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I would just give your TrackIR 1 to your brother - sister - cousin - friend - enemy - whatever for XMas and enjoy a new TrackIR 2. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Then at least you can rag on them that your new one works so much better than the one you gave them. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

As for the email address someone requested above: I will not give that out over the forum. But, you can go to their website, www.trackir.com, (http://www.trackir.com,) and get in touch with them through that media.

Can you please upload a couple of tracks using both the new and old TIR for comparison? Something that hilights the smoother panning of the new one would help owners of the original TIR decided whether or not to upgrade.

I am sure that tracks using the TrackIR 2 will be around the internet soon enough.

We do not have the time to do something like this as we are now working on with CH Products on their HOTAS system.

Besides, if my integrity and honesty in the review is not enough, then nothing will be. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
