I know the British named it "Mustang", so I'm sure the Brits made/created the plane if I'm not wrong. (correct me if am wrong)

US designed the airframe, then when they realised it didn't work very well with their Allison engine, they flogged them off cheap to UK. The RAF then fitted them up with Rolls-Royce Merlin engines which transformed their performance completely, and the US then re-adopted them.

So, a bit of both then.

No it isn't. We just put a decent engine it and discovered it's potential. The US took it on from there.

BTW who cares?

Well, yes - because the RAF had no long-range (daylight) bombers to escort /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Ok history time, the mustangs origin was from a request to North American from the British purchasing Comission ,to be a second source for production of the P-40.North American then said, Why???,we can do better! and designed the P-51,which was called the Mustang(by the British). In this form it was still crippled by the Allison engine(High Level only 20,000ft plus). Then the British Merlin engine was placed into the aircraft and the rest as they say is History. So it was designed for Britain with American Know how and finished with a British Engine. So good was the performance the USA decided they could use a few(15,486 produced).
