So that is your 'Christmas' gift?
Great specs, should bring a fluid gaming experience! Did you get a rebate on the Pentium D?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

1) Well, yes and no! I'm gonna really enjoy it during the dark scandinavian winter, so you could say it's a x-mas gift for myself!
2) A rebate? A discount? At a cheaper prize? Than what? No, the prize was fixed for a tower with a certain specification - I just altered it for some parts: ram, graphics...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The aim of my last question is to understand the choice of CPU. Pentium D - 945 is priced at the level of a Core 2 Duo E6300.

If you read this (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-e6300.html), my understanding is that the new core 2 Duo beats the old Pentium.

Edit: Core 2 is less power hungry.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I agree. Unless there's a significant discount, the Prescott is a curious choice now the Conroes are out. For example, at Newegg the E6300 is only $15 more expensive than the 945 ($183 v $168). It's not just faster but runs much, much cooler. Then again, if it was my money and I was buying a system with those sort of specs I'd be stretching for at least an E6400 ($224), which is a more noticeable jump over the Prescotts. For $316 the E6600 puts you in AMD FX-62 territory for a lot less money.

I know everyone has their own cut-off point but I would have been looking at the E6300 also rather than a Prescott.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Well, I have just tried to compare prizes of the 945 CPU and the E6300 at the shops website, and it's about 25$, when trying to buy the CPU alone.
But the starting pc system with the E6300 and the one with the 945 is a difference of about 108$.

However, what I'm curious about: the E6300 is only 1.86 Ghz, whereas the 945 is 3.4 Ghz. So you're telling me that the E6300 with 1.86 Ghz is faster than the 945 with 3.4 Ghz ?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

That is the idea, cpu performance is greatly improved by the instruction per cycle (IPC) rate. The E6300 would process more instructions/data per clock tick. It is still more efficient at a lower clock rate.
It would be interesting to know if the sytem motherboard of your new PC is compatible with the Core 2 cpu? You could upgrade later.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Interesting! I didn't know that! Maybe I could call the shop tomorrow, cancel my order and make another one! Maybe, I'll go for the E6600 2.4 Ghz then... It's about 261$ more, but...

Since they are both Socket LGA 775 chips, as long as the chipset on the motherboard supports the Conroe (as the 965G does) I can't see why the system price per se should be so much higher. My guess is they're trying to shift older stock. The 945 is a higher end chip in its family and will run SH3 easily, whereas the E6300 is the entry-level to its family - but if it was my money I know which family I'd choose.

One note: whilst the Conroes run very much cooler than their predecessors (Intel let heat get way out of control to the point where at least one Pentium D would reach its maximum operating temperature and throttle itself back even with the stock Intel cooler!), there have been complaints in other forums about some Conroes running hot because of shoddy heatsinks. Should you get one be sure the shop runs it under load for 24 hours before you pick it up.

Spot on. You CANNOT meaningfully compare raw CPU frequencies between different architectures, even if they're made by the same company. Read my post at http://forums.<b style="color:black;background-color:#a0ffff">ubi[/b].com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/34...151025294#3151025294 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/3431005294?r=3151025294#3151025294) for more detail on the architectural differences.

Even the E6400 would perform noticeably faster than the Prescott 945, but either way the E6400 or E6600 would be more suitable for a high-end system like the one you're building.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I think you'll be happier in the long run with the E6600. It's even faster than my overclocked X2 4200. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As for 3DMark05 and 06, they are well known graphics benchmark applications you can download from http://www.futuremark.com/download/.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
