Summary

Before I close, I have to confess that after seeing SH3 a year ago at E3, and again during the October 2004 Sub Club meeting, it€s been truly hard to suppress the excitement and anticipation I€ve felt. The specter of SH2 hung over my expectations. With each new SH3 build I was thinking, "Please Lord, don€t let this game let us down". It didn€t. SH3 really impressed me at every phase of its development€"it€s been all I could do not to rave. No more. This subsim has everything plus everything else. The final score? What else can you say about a hands-down, across the board superb game? Silent Hunter III is the King of Subsims!

Rating: 100

Screens will be added when the review is actually posted... Sorry guys, but you're looking at a leak.

I'm sorry to say this, but I must.

As far as it reads right now, it's a flawed review. If you can't see the bias, your blind. How in the name of (place diety's name here) can the game be rated a 100 with the known flaws and omissions?

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't this just a preview from last year?

Looks like the review was leaked. I think the author changed the link to finish it.

It'll be done in about an hour, according to official sources.

That WAS the link to the review that I leaked, but Neal changed it so he could finish it. Like he said to me, it'll be done in an hour.

It's not the review guys.... stand down. That's one from last October 2004. Neal is however putting the finishing touches on the gold review, which should be up any time. No need to Roast Onkle Neal, or Ubi for that matter, on an old review of a beta build. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It'll finally be done when the criticisms and questions they know are being asked and griped about are addressed.

They have to know the answers to questions being asked. Why aren't they answering them?

Where can you or I get an unbiased review? I'm constantly looking on the net at the gaming sites for one written by a competent sub/sim player.

Hopefully, someone, somewhere will fess up the whole 'truth' about it, with ALL of the flaws pointed out and commented on.

Yes this is a negative view of things, but the hype lately is finally revealing the 'real' truth of the matter.

I'm really afraid that this isn't looking up to be what it could have been. But then there are modders out there to fix the game.
Apparently the game shouldn't have been released this soon.

He added disclaimer he couldnt test multiplayer yet he gave it 4/5 score. I think multiplayer is bigger part of this game than just 5 points, it should be out of 10, and those points should be considered only after he has chance to play multiplayer extensively for at least 1 or 2 days. Also, can the reviewer please add whether there is direct tcp/ip or are we forced to use those game matching services that usually suck such as ea online, and often cause problems?

It's updated with screens, it's live.

Killer, I played various demos and builds over the last EIGHT months; I played the release candidate and the gold for the last two weeks, I don't have any gripes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I am entitled to say I like it, it kicks the **** out of every WWII subsim that came before it, if that's the way I see it. I'm certainly not going to hold back because some players may think it's hype. Go ahead and check other reviewers, I could be wrong.

I know which computer game I'm going to be playing for a long time.

3 more days.

Nice review and the 100 score is ofcourse normal from a fellow subsimmer. In my mind 100 is ok if you compare SHIII to previous WWII subsims. I expect lower score from other review sites.

But if subsim fan gives it 100% I believe we all will take that as a sign. This game is rock solid and will keep us busy for long long time http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

@neali

sorry dude but 100% what the hell? this says that there are no bugs and all is nice. but it is

we have the uzo bug and low resolution so i dont understand why you give 100% to this game!

Krycek1972
03-14-2005, 04:19 AM
Reviews are always subjective to the reviewer, if someone likes what they have played and dont discover any bugs it gets high marks. I remember a magazine review where the reviewer was a FPS person and he reviewed a flight sim, it got low marks as he couldnt get into the game.

The only review I go on is my own. If it meets my expectations then im happy, anything else is a waste. Of course glowing reviews in lots of different publications make me more likely to purchase a game but that doesnt mean I haven't been stung in the past by big piles of steaming poo. As Im sure most people have purchased howlers in the past.

Which is why you aren't a reviewer.

You have to look at the bigger picture. Not find one thing you hate and let the entire review reflect that.

Wolfpack was one of the main gemran submarine tactics. So why is it left out? IMHO that is not only a minor flaw. It is now like flying only a lone B-17 in all missions in the B17 -II game

100% is a bit extreme, IMO. If the ship that rams you doesn't sink, and there were wolfpacks, then yes 100%. Without them, 98%!

From the review, it seems the biggest flaws are that when you're rammed, you take moderate damage and the ship sinks 80% of the time, there aren't wolfpacks, and the ports are empty. In order of significance to me. IMO, the ramming flaw could be fixed quickly with a patch (I hope!), and wolfpacks would make an excellent add-on pack.

Think about the amount of extra coding that a wolfpack would require - it would need a whole load of extra AI behaviour, communication options, protocols, voices. It would add a lot to the game, but it would also add six months to the release date.

Ships in port would be nice to have, so you can make the occasional raid - but if it was done realistically, then 95% of the time you would get caught by patrols and die, so you wouldn't do it very often. I'm glad that the devs have left it out, because it means we get SH3 a few weeks earlier.

Wolfpacks and detailed ports would be excellent for an add-on - perhaps with an Italian submarine?

I am hoping that much of the work is done already, yet they just did not have time to polish it (test it, whatever) properly to match their preferred standard. They may just have postponed "activating" wolfpacks until they are ready.

Wolfpacks WAS a major part of the WWII Atlantic campaign, and I would be disappointed indeed if they intend to charge me extra to get it as an add-on. As a patch it is acceptable, as an add-on... no.

Philipscdrw

I would gladly buy an add-on containing wolf-packs if it would a) give me really good wolf-packs and b) help secure DC2 and SH4...

Actually he gives it a score of 97, its the fact that there are three bonus points for the naval academy and advanced realism options that takes it to 100.....

Why would we have to PAY! for something that is supposed to be included in the original game ? They better include it in a patch and make DC2 an addon!

Very well said!

According to the letter from Cristian, you are right, good wolfpack AI will need AI subroutines. I agree, an excellent candidate for an add-on; SH3 Wolfpack Expansion.

Quite frankly I find this to be insulting.
All the time we vere being promised something and when the game comes out it isn`t there!
Somehow I think this kind of behaviour demands at least an explanation.
