View Full Version : I didn't get credit for killing pilot in parachute!!

IT'S GETTING UGLY OUT HERE. Yesterday, one of my Focke-Wulf pilots was killed by ground fire AFTER he bailed out and was coming down in his parachute. He was struck by a 20 mm anti-aircraft shell--an act that was nothing short of cold-blooded murder. Our entire unit was devastated by the loss of this veteran combat flyer.
Today, we got some payback. When I saw a Russian pilot (fortunately he was Russian) floating down in his parachute, rather than ignore him, I bore straight down on him with guns blazing. I didn't hit him, but I struck him with my left wing, and KIA'd this subhuman scum. It was an exhilarating feeling. My plane wasn't damaged and the mission was a success. Best Regards from the Southern Front.

You are lucky you didn't lose a wing. Those pilots have abs of steel.

It's about human nature. I think it's an example of how good men can commit horrific atrocities in war. Before yesterday, I would have never even considered shooting a parachuting pilot. After my pilot was shot in his parachute yesterday I was pretty upset. Today I saw the opportunity to settle the score. It's just a simulation, but I wonder if I would have done something like this in real life. I think I can now see how these things happen. It's an interesting game and by the way, I think war is very repulsive in reality.

It's really not much sport to pick them off while they are hanging from their chute. Much more challenging to pick them off as they leave the plane or get them before their chute opens !

Yep. War sucks, and I have had more insight into the WWII air war from playing this game than from all of the coverage on the History Channel. A friend and I were playing a LAN game with me piloting an IL2, and him as my gunner in a coop. It seemed as if the entire Luftwaffe was surrounding us, but no fire . . . yet! I had a payload to drop, and was starting to get very nervous, maybe even wishing that they would do SOMETHING! It occured to me at that point that if this were real, they would have wanted as many AC close and formed up as possible because they were SCARED! When the battle finally began, I fought with all my might to stay on target as John, my gunner, valiantly blazed away at the 109 on our 6. "CRAP!" I said as I missed our target. Then, a hit to our power plant! Oil appeared on the windscreen, and I fought for vision as John was wounded. Our monitors were back to back, so I turned around and asked how he was. He kept shouting "Left, Right" and "Nose up! Nose Down!" We were crossing water, and he asks me if we are going to make it. Our engine was sputtering. "I think so. I see a field just on the bank. I'll try to get us there!" The enemy plane saw that we were done for, and broke off his attack. I lost all power, and glided down to the field, just barely clearing the water, and dropped full flaps. By now we were on fire, but I managed to belly her down pretty good. "Quick, John! Ctrl+E, Bail! Bail!" We both jumped out and ran as fast as our little virtual bodies could go, and just as we dove for cover there was the sound of our beautiful attack plane exploding. "Mission Failed" it said. Hmmm. No way! We both had a half hour experience that really opened my eyes to how horrible it must have been for these brave pilots on all sides. Even more so when such a good friend was playing the part of my gunner.

Yes it was.

I can't remember the name of the book anymore but it was by a pilot in the British Expeditionary Force that went to help France. They flew Hurricanes and one day the squadron leader's aircraft was hit and he was forced to bail out, a german pilot then shot him on the way down in his chute.

Two members of the squardron's leaders flight where able to force the 109 to crash land. At which point they circled round and both shot the hell out of the German pilot as he tried to escape his aircraft. Neither pilot was proud of what they did, but you really don't think of things like that in the heat of the moment.

Well, during the last stages of Spanish Civil War shooting parachuting pilots became a disgusting use.

It is well known, that Nationalist ace Garc√¬*a Morato, who hated this practice, had to fight with his CR.32 against an Italian comrade who wanted to shoot out a guy who had bailed out.

This guy was Garc√¬*a Morato's wingman. The Italian pilot mistook him for a Republican pilot. Finally, he saved his life, and no one was hurted, but the fight went on after landing, with Morato and the Italian pilot punching each other after a hangar.

That's war, I'm afraid. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I've noticed that the AAA teams int he campaign will always target enemy pilot's who have bailed if they are in range of the AAA. Was this usually the case in the real war as well?

We're glad to hear that, ubermensch. Why don't you sing us the Horst Wessel lied to celebrate ?

If you hit the parachute itself with any bullet, it fails and the pilot dies, and the pilot dies it you hit him with heavy bullets once or twice and a few times with lighter bullets.

I don't think they're worth your ammo, just let them fall by themselves (sometimes they die when they hit the ground anyway).

No, you wait until they get within 300m of the ground then you call in the Pe-8's and have 'em drop a daisy cutter amongst the chutes.

Well, killing a guy in his chute was not payback. When you bail from a plane and there is enemy AA around, it only recognizes an enemy. Bail out of a plane you landed near it and it will shoot at you and the plane until it is destroyed. Its not personal, its just how the AI gun crews are programmed. You want payback? Go kill the AA gun that shot your buddy. The pilot you shot down didnt do it. And I also find it hard to believe you clipped a chute and didnt lose a wing. As far as I know, any contact with a chute will strip a wing off. I blast AI parachutes all the time (offline) for target practice. But NEVER online. I have seen the "Well, they did it in the war, so its historically correct" argument to many times. We are not making history here. This is a sim, and many like myself treat the opponent with respect. War is not a pretty thing for anyone or either side. So lets keep our sim fun, and treat each other as we would want to be treated. Down the plane, not the pilot.

...and once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward,
for there you have been and there you long to return.

No reason to get upset. It's just a damn good sim/game,and a very nice diversion! If you want "total realism",join the military. These days you would be in a position to experience war first hand!Served 10 years my self, dad and uncle served in Korea, buddies of theirs in WW2.

Your a dumba$$. It was the Russian AAA that shot your buddy down, not another pilot. You fail to realize this in your chest thumping tantrum.
