View Full Version : Dedicated Server install software exe.

I'm in the process of creating a dedicated server self installer for those with problems. I have a version for the 'standard' C drive install completed. After install all the user needs to do is click on 1 file to extract registry information to set paths for HL..

For users with other drive names the path is selectable in exe as most are. To edit the registry path all that is needed is to right click and select edit and change the drive information from default C to whatever D,E etc

will this work for most?

Works for me, as long as I can still play regular games on HL too. I believe I've heard this is possible, but some have had problems. Do we still need the Ubi sevice installed? Thanks for all of your hard work, all of you who are helping the community with this. *=!Salute!=*

If I understand what you are saying is you have made an installer that will install HL and FBserver.exe? Or is it just an automated way of installing FBServer to allow current users of HL to join dedicated servers?

We certainly need something, I had 2 dedicated servers running yestarday and i thnk they both got about 4 visits http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I wrote a set of instructions to help folk who visit our site join our servers when they are on HL: http://www.battle-fields.com/article.php?artid=71

Some people I know use various hard drives and directories to install games, I certainly do (F:\FB\) LOL

I'll uninstall the working version and install this to test for bugs.
Works fine- can join any game, dedserv or regular.

If you haven't flown in a dedserv using this software, the difference is the same as 32meg vid card and 128 meg card- its that big of a difference. Way smoother, not sure why its the only game in town.
Maybe the easy install will attract more users.
Lower pings, higher fps are only a few of the advantages, removes facial hair, deepens the voice, lose those unwanted inches etc are documented and guaranteed satisfaction.

Great work, hunter.

Everything that makes getting set up for dedicated servers easier will help the cause. As I've said elsewhere, it would be good to standardise on one easy method for installation and use. Note how obsolete instructions for installation are still getting bumped on the boards (i.e.: ATTENTION!! IMPORTANT DEDICATED SERVER INFO INSIDE!! - UPDATED). If the latest news was supported from Ubi's FB front page it would make a big difference.

I think the main reason people aren't playing the dedicated servers is that there's no-one on the dedicated servers! It will take time and patience to break out of this vicious circle, but if people find the quality of game experience significantly better, it will ineveitably take off. Once we're past the tipping point, just watch, it'll mushroom.

Little thought - Squads could help a lot by taking their business to the dedicated servers.

It is just an automated install of the FBServer. Some have said it is too difficult for the average users so if we can make it simple hopefully it will make this a more popular solution for DF arenas. As many of you know this is a much more stable platform for playing online.

Hard to understand why more arent using all the dedicated servers out there, even with a 500 ping, the servers Ive been on have been very smooth compared to non dedicated.
Hope your exe will get more using them Hunter Ive had no problems joining any type of server since installing the client 2 or 3 weeks ago.

That's a great idea, Hunter. I am what you would consider an average computer guy, and I had difficulty with FB server, so finally gave up.
I downloaded FB Server , created a new folder in FB directory etc. but when I changed pathname in Hyperlobby - HL wouldnt recognize the path... Anything to simplify the process would be heroic and well received.. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Sir:

That sounds like a great idea. Some of the directions are sorta confusing, I wrote this one for our forum:

Gents:

Not sure if these are any clearer directions than others out there but maybe this will help.

Download the program at http://www.wildhoney.nightmail.ru/il2fb/FBServer.zip

In your Forgotten Battles folder start a new folder and call it FBL extract the server to this folder. Double click on it and when it opens choose "options" then "preferences" in the window at the bottom of the box for IL2 game path click locate and make it point to the il2fb.exe that is in your Forgotten Battles folder. Now rename the file in the FBL folder to il2fb.exe.

Open HL and holding down the shift& control key hit the connect button. In the box that opens hit search or type in the path to the il2fb.exe file that is now in the new FBL folder you made. Mine looks like this, but yours will be different -c:\Games\Forgotten Battles\FBL\il2fb.exe Hit save and connect to HL.

You will now be able to join any normal or dedicated game on HL .

If you want to host a game on HL do the following. While holding down the shift and control keys hit connect. When the window opens just remove the \FBL so that the path points to the original il2fb.exe file in your Forgotten Battles folder so it again looks like this (c:\Games\Forgotten Battles\il2fb.exe). You can now host games and join normal games.

If you want to join dedicated servers again. Hold down the shift & control keys, hit connect and insert the \FBL in the path so that HL looks for the il2fb.exe that is in the FBL folder so it now looks like this (c:\Games\Forgotten Battles\FBL\il2fb.exe).

This is about the simplest way to join both types of games and have your hosting capabilities without going in and renaming two files as before.

If you have it working with one of the older methods I would change it to this system as it makes it easier to use all games on HL and UBI.

Hope this make sense.

Thats it? Am I missing something? I installed it and its working, joined a dedserv just moments ago.

Is that it? Why is it working? After the hell I went thru naming files and screwing around this 5 second install did all that????

Dude, you are one cruel primate.

I've got the install if someone wants to test it. Works fine, PM me with the details and I'll forward it.
Its only 479kb in size.

I've got WinXPpro, so it worked for me, in those settings.

btw, if people could host games that are more than just Full unRealy Harder settings, I think that would encourage more people also. I know it's out of your hands, your making the .exe, but maybe the hosts will take notice. Thanks for your dedication, guys! You help make this better for all of us.

Thank You Hunter82,

I am not a technical person and had avoided attempting the dedicated server instructions just in case I did something wrong.

It will benifit people like me if you can do a single programme which does everything on a single point and click.

I look forward to using it when its ready http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thank you for your efforts.

The small file took a coulpe of seconds even on my two cups and string connection.
Excellent work, H2- wish I knew how to make programs, nice work.

Sounds great. I'm wondering though if you had done all the DS steps before using this quick .exe?

I'm asking because you might already have had the necessary registry entries, UBI service, etc. installed so it may seem like the new .exe installed flawlessly.

I haven't got around to going through all the (old) steps to installing DS so that's why I'm wondering.

cheers

Gr8 Idea Hunter. Let me know when you finalize it and I will put it on my website and put a note in my sig about it.

I think if all squad commands require their members to install this, we will have a good head start. That way the squads can use the Dedicated servers for training as someone else suggested. Come on fellas, lets get this thing rolling!

One question: Is there anyway to get around the "unable to host" problem after doing this? I know all you have to do is reconfigure the Hyperlobby path to the original. Which only takes 30 seconds. But, It may be a weak selling point for this.

Does anyone know if Jiri is working on a possible fix?

Tried two dedicated servers just a few minutes ago using the FBServer with no joy. Timed out each attempt. They were the GSV and AusFB dedicated servers.

Used Gumby's instructions and link to retrieve the zip. Printed the instructions just to be sure. All installed well and his instructions are clear and concise. Again however, there is no joy on connecting to Dedicated Servers.

With the path set at Hyperlobby to C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\FBL\il2fb.exe I do get the loading screen that advises "launching game...game launched" but time out each attempt.

With the path set to default, C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\il2fb.exe I can connect to all other servers and/or dogfight rooms.

Hunter82 Just made a self-installing zip file. Its not Gumbys method, this is a double click and forgot program. No renaming, nothing, install and thats it.

The name of this file is "setup.zip" It does all that, no directions, just click and fly.
Its being tested now, worked perfect for me, and one other with the feed back I got

No it does not. The registry entries I have supplied are for XP/2K. I'll need to get a 98/ME set also to include in setup. It creates a desktop icon for regular FB also to avaid the renaming or recreation of the icon for users also.

I had totally uninstalled the FBServer and associated registry strings then joined dedicated games and standard games via HL this morning before e-mailing to HD to help test. If there are any issues with those who have d/l'd it let me know so I can correct and add another exe.

OK. Now I am a bit confused, pls help me a bit:
Hunter, could you please fill in the correct asnwers?

YES The "Hunter82" setup is for users (clients)
It allows them to:
YES a) connect to a DC via Hyperlobby
YES b) connect to other IL2FB Hosts via Hyperlobby
??? c) Host with their IL2FB via Hyperlobby
??? d) connect to DC via Ubi.com
??? e) connect to other IL2FB Hosts via Ubi.com

Tried the installation routine on an empty pc, the only thing that in my opinion may create problems is that you program installs to the shortcut folder \program files\ubisoft\IL2 Forgotten Battles
I was not able to change that. What happens if I have not installed IL2FB in that directory?

when doing the install it allows you to select FB path in setup program in next version. The folder installed allows the uninstall of the program entries. This currently is for HL users only as I have done absolutly no testing with this in UBI.com for this.

The file is only a test version right now. I will be getting win 98/me registry info shortly and adding it to exe. The registry info if other than default c drive will need to be changed by the end user or I will add multiples but it gets fairly confusing if all these other options are installed to select.

As of now, the 335th_GR Dedicated server is up and running.

Just a test machine for starters, 550Mhz, 128Mb :-( but with DSL connetion :-)
Upgrade is pending....
Still, with 5 players online and CPU load 5%, no lags, Jesus!!!

Many thanks to a FEW names I can recall, the list is far, far longer ) Hunter82, CrazyIvan, WILDHONEY, TOAD, THX and everybody else who with his postings in HL helped me understand how to make work !

Please everyone visit and stay in a dedicated server.

Unless is Hunter believes otherwise, I think that since the Dedicated Server Patch which Ubi released and made DC open for HL hosting as well, it is no longer necessary to develop such a tool.

If you need precise instructions on how to set up the DC you can look at this thread:
