Just got hold of a copy of EAW but found its unplayable under XP. The graphics run really slowly and shuddery. Anyone running it ok under XP?

Guess I'll just stick to FB in future!

Take a look at this site. Do a search for more info. It is very helpful site.

Good luck, I have had EAW working under XP. But the newer drivers will give an error 7217

I started a thread on this a while back aptly named "EAW" i suggest you search for the thread and in it you shall find the link that tells you how to make EAW playble. However, let me warn you. After i had done everything it told me to, i started the game and yes it worked, BUT i was hugely disapointed and i never played it again after that. The only thing i enjoyed about the trip to memory lane was the briefing screens. It just didnt give me the same feeling any more. I was like you too; never thought id say what im saying about it. It was my first true ww2 flight sim and i wont forget it, but im sorry i ruined a good thing.

That's too bad for you. Did you mod it or anything? Yea, out of the box it's a relic, but the literally hundreds of mods is what makes EAW a completely new experience. Nothing captures the atmosphere of the entire sky filled with B17 formations, something absent in the IL2 series.

Blazer, don't be put off trying it. Give it a shot, and judge for yourself.

EAW runs fine on XP. But I suggest to install Glide Wrapper, a utility that allows you to run the game in Glide mode (used by the old 3dfx cards), much better image quality than D3D. Get a new terrain, Mea****er's soundpack, a decent campaign and a couple of other stuff and you're set to have some great fun with the old lady.

I still have an installation of EAW (heavily modded) on my HD, and in some aspects it STILL beats IL2 hands down.

Here's some more help to get you started:

I used Glide wrapper and now it runs fine. Although the briefing screens are all distorted.

Do you have a GeForce card?

There once was a site that had a detailed fix for the bad briefing screens. I never tried the procedure so I don't know if it works. I think the site was run by Max88.

The nVidia fix is a simple registry edit. There's also a utility floating about the net somewhere that will do the edit for you.

Had 85 vics in the BOB camp, with a Hurri and 92 as a Bf109E driver. Loved that game. Max188's site should have that GeForce fix in the d/l section.

Yes, it does.
And here a couple good places to look for other stuff.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I bought it for Western Front action, had problems with it locking up, then decided it was absolute cr*p & hocked it with a few others to get Battle over Europe, best move I ever did.
But I did buy it after I had played AEP-FB 2.04
"bad move"

256 aircraft at the same time, reason enough to play EAW!

it depends on the who made the game disk if it will play on XP.

dependant on who it was under, infogrames made one, and another company did others.( i forgot who)

one will load perfect into XP,and playable the other..you must install it on a windows 98 machine..once installed, copy the complete program file from 98 OS to XP os.

Really? When it's so much older? What things does it do better?

IMHO: IMMERSION AND CHAOS.

Everything from the briefing screens, to the campaigns to the sight of seeing hundreds of bombers streaking across the sky, like Sillius_Sodus said "256 aircraft at the same time, reason enough to play EAW!"

And call me crazy, but I actually like the terrain mods of EAW much better. But to me, that sense of immersion and chaos holds some magical element that always draws me back to EAW too.

It runs fine on xp. Maybe try running it under compatibility mode. Right click the run icon and choose windows 98 or other.

One thing I like about it is the constant comms between you and your squad. Thats something the Il2 series lacks badly.

i miss the F12 key. there is no function like that here http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

the multicamera "video" always got the right angles, shots at the appropriate time to make watching it fairly exciting. veiwing the battle, and watch it unfold right in fromnt of you was pretty cool.

EAW was a revelation for me. Before it I had spent a lot of money on different flightsims, playing them all from time to time. After buying EAW (and certainly after flying it online) I never played another sim.... I got "monotheistic" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif... I kept my faith until IL2 Original, played it for some time, loved it but went back to EAW, a kind of "Moses and the Golden Bull Calf episode" hehe....

When IL2FB appeared... well... I converted. Never played EAW again. I have thought about trying EAW again just for the fun of it, but I think I will refrain myself.. I have so many good memories about it and I don't want to spoil it by comparing it to today's standards of gfx...

Rest in peace EAW, you were my first game addictionhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
