not sure....however, parachutes were made of hemp during the second world war....reefer was grown like made out in the American West for the war effort....true to form, the weed spread naturally and can be found as "Ditch Weed"...i wouldn't try to smoke it tho

Hemp Plastic - Genius!

- and no you wouldn't want to smoke regular hemp - be sure.

Slightly OT but didn't the Zero have some Bamboo elements to it?

I would not at all be surprised if the canvas used to cover WW1 era aircraft was made of hemp fibre. Hempseed oil was used at least until WW2 to lubricate parts of aircraft engines.

What were the reasons for this switch to petrochemists?

Lammont DuPont's successfull lobbying and close ties with powerfull media mogul William Randolph Hearst, had a great deal to do with attaching the stigma of marijuana to hemp to help push the sales of thier "synthetic hemp" and other petro-chem products.

Lots of good info on the net. Unfortunately, most of it is made availble by people who are also pushing for legalization of marijuana which
helps perpetuate the myth (in the minds of the general public) that hemp = marijuana.

Slightly OT but didn't the Zero have some Bamboo elements to it?

Apparently there was a wartime joke/propoganda about the Mitsubishi Zero's design being stolen from Howard Hughes but put together with bamboo and rice paper.

The plane built and flown by America's first female pilot Bessica Medlar Raiche was made of bamboo and silk.

Being at university, the boyfriend of one girl I liked so much was a fanatic ecologist. I just couldn't stand the guy. Once, some years after that, I found him hitch-hiking and I decided to let him in my car. He didn't recognize me.

He told me he was an active ecologist, and started critizicing petrol companies. As I was driving I felt an ache in my stomach, and had an idea.

Me: -Prrrrrffffff!!! (noisy fart)
Eco-idiot: -Hey! You OK? Ooof!
Me: -Why?
Eco-idiot: -I think I've heard a fart.
Me: -It's the engine. Sometimes it sounds that way.
Eco-idiot: -Oh really? (sniff) And that horrible smell?
Me: -The engine. A new ecological system. It works with methane gas. It's obtained from excrements of big farm herbivores.
Eco-idiot: -Come on! That's bullshâ¡t!
Me: -Exactly. Being also a defender of Mother Nature, I knew you'd find it interesting.
Eco-idiot: -(...)

Needless to say I had no more repressed gases in my belly during all the rest of the trip. The guy respected my desire of not opening the windows, tho, since I had a "terrible cold". He just put his nose under his arm a few times.

Revenge!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

My Baby is a 1979 4X4 Ford F-150 and has been nearly rebuilt form the ground up by me using parts made in the Good Old USofA. LOL, So yes I'm proud of it and wouldn't give 10 times the money and effort that has gone in to it, although I think my wife would glady give it to anyone for free while I wasn't looking http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

what were the reasons for this switch to petrochemists?

Raaid you don't have much retention of what you read, do you. Or perhaps the welded tubular
frame you think was welded hemp as well?

And that picture of the car they show is clearly at least a 30's or later vintage.

Hemp was raised in the US for ship rope and the manufacture of canvas. The fibre is much
superior to any other grown for those purposes and many others. It makes a very durable
paper even when quite thin.

The people who run that site obviously have other uses for hemp. 'Medicinal' uses that have
not helped them in academic, scolarly or logical pursuits, or perhaps the site is the joke
it appears to be. Not that I am against them but hey, don't take that shize seriously!
