Hey guys, Im going to be headed to the udvar-hazy center in a couple weeks for the first time. I know some of you have already been there, but it will be the first time seeing the restored planes since I last got to see some of them while visiting the Garber restoration center/museum, as a kid a long time ago... I remember once hanging back form the tour group to touch the then broken apart Ho 229 V3 prototype! what a thrill. couldnt believe I was touching a piece of Luftwaffe secret technology!

anyway, im going to be bringing my camera (duh!) and I thought I would offer to take some requests from you in case there was a particular plane you wanted to see...

I also wouldnt mind hearing some stories from those who have visited before, I know bearcat has been http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

cheers.

It's an amazing place. The gift shop is far better than most museums I have been to and has some absolutely wonderful books.

Next to the SR-71, they also have performance data traces from the record breaking transatlantic flight to the Farnborough Airshow, which are extremely interesting if you are an engineer, but which unfortunately are in a glass case which tends to defeat cameras thanks to the joys of autofocus...

I live about 3 miles away. I am there quite a bit. The F-105 Thunderchief is pretty cool .

Here are a few old pics I took when it opened. They have added many things since .

I LOVE this shot showing the FD-2 AI aerials on the Gekko. I have a terrific book on the restoration of this aircraft published by the Smithsonian Institute. (Moonlight Interceptor)

Also like the P-61C. Too bad the "C" didn't see any action, or I would love it more.

Mucho thanks.

One of the most beautiful yet mean looking A/C that will ever take to the skies. (No, not the Hayate).

when I visited the Gaber restoration museum I remember seeing a Mosquito and i was really looking forward to seeing it again but sadly it wasnt there... and as far as im concerned no air museum collection is complete without a spitfire. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

also i noticed that in the modern area section there was a very large empty area.. they could definitely fit another 5 to 8 planes.

Correct, and I was suprised to see that it was very nearly the size of the P-47.

Both were dwarfed by the Do-335 though.

BTW, Udvar-Hazy is were I saw the glorious FW190 for the first time. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

The FW is bigger than I imagined and the BMW radial out front is enormous, the airplane itself is truly a design masterpiece. An absolutely beautiful aircraft that I could hardly take my eyes off of. The landing gear is very wide-tracked and very beefy...the aircraft is just a very fine looking machine, and it definitely lived up to my expectations.

I just found this link, from your page that makes it faster to find your favorite of the bunch.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/b...s/72157617059276488/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/biggs222/sets/72157617059276488/)
Pretty cool site, I may archive my stuff there, too. Has it been around long, would it be a solid place to archive stuff like this for the future.

Ah I see, I just went to sign up and it's affiliated with Yahoo.
And I already have stuff there, LOL from when I went to the Dayton Museum, but I don't recall hosting them up on any yahoo medium???

Matter of fact I had forgotten uploading them to here all together.

I'd best bookmark it today. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I love that place - and I'm fortunate enough to live not too far from it. Halloween is a great time to go there - families come dressed in costumes, and they have activity stations all around the place that demonstrate aeronautical principles (making wire guided balloon "missiles", paper helicopters, etc). They also have people who are professional costumers there, and people who built replicas of famous robots, like R2-D2 and B9 from Lost in Space. And of course, the planes.

Hope you have a great trip! As long as you're in the neighborhood - you should go see the Air & Space Museum in DC as well. I can recommend taking a trip to the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant in College Park, MD as well:
