View Full Version : Completely new guy, a bit concerned

So, I have never played any of the IL-2 series, but recently was itched for a new flight sim for a new computer I just recently bought.

After reading a lot of forum posts, I concluded 2 things:

1)This game is the definitive WWII fight sim
2) It's hardcore.

I've already pulled the trigger on gogamer, but I ask the players of this series: Is a new guy going to have fun with this, and not be bogged down by fuel mixtures, yaw recoil, etc. It seems many posts arae very technical. I don't care about gun recoil, or faithful engine noise. Will I be able to take off a bring down a bomber?!?

Thanks for your help. Great forum/community. Game looks great, and can't wait to play.
Cheers.

Thanks for all your responses. I'm hoping my new laptop can support it. (Was it obsolete when I took it out of the box?!?)

Trailers look great.

It better be one heck of a laptop. Don't expect this game to look as good as you see in some trailers. This game has many levels of detail settings so that you can tune it to get good gameplay. Just don't be too disappointed if its a slideshow with the eye candy turned up.

Good luck!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The learning curve starts at low level (thanks for the difficulty switch options), so don't be afraid to hop in. However, it's like climbing the Himalayas. The key for those staying with this game for years seems to the ability to enjoy not only this game, but also ENJOY LEARNING through this game. The technical debates are often the result of people wanting to learn more, and others wanting to share their pieces of information.

People, who have a short life span in IL2 universe, are those who just want to be successful without learning at all.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Welcome aboard. I wouldn't fret about those things. Ya see.... if you don't want to be bothered with things like mixture, and all that technical mumbo jumbo... well.... ya don't have to be. But'ca know..... the beauty of this sim is..... if you don't care about those things now.. eventually you will.

This sim is challenging. It is such a nifty piece of kit that once you climb one hill... you are stoked and thoroughly amped for the next one. So if.. say for debate's sake.... you start off with the noobiest of noobilious settings.... I mean a brazenly open pit in all it's red and blue arrowed, non stalling, one shot exploding, airplane on the map showing glory... well.... after a while.. when that gets boring as h@ll.... -and it will... that's why you .."recently was itched for a new flight sim for a new computer I just recently bought...." Other wise.. why.... you would have plopped that old POS you used to fly... watever it was.... on your "new" PC and had at it- Then you can start to nibble on the more intricate, shall I say.. engrossing aspects of this sim that has produced the leigion of fans that it has... many whom have been here since... the Demo... I'm talking what.... late 2000.. early 2001.... That's what... 5 years.... 5 years.... on one sim... for a lot of these folks.... Now I certainly wouldnt take a bite out of a pile of dung because millions of flies do every day.... but hey man.... we're talking working, breathing, resposibility carrying, job holding, professional people... which a lot of us are.... but we still make time to do this.... nagging wife, pesky boss, real life notwithstanding.... and for some of us it has been years, yet we are still here.. and not onmly still here but actually enjoying the sim..... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif so there must be something about this product that ..... gets one engaged.

You obviously are tired of the run of the mill ho hummm shootemup... puuuulll the triiigger... tuuurn to the riiiight.. turn to the leeeeft.... now shoooooot..... flight sim.

Nahhh man.... you want ...... the butter.... you want ....the cream...
You want a new thrill to take you someplace you have only imagined... and down a few roads that frankly.... you may have never even thought of.... You want This sim...

You just aren't sure yet... and the rabid glassy eyed denizons of this forum... and make no mistake.. I include myself among them..... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

May have alarmed you a bit what with all the talk of turn rates and climb speeds etc.... Most of us are NOT geeks. We just like flight sims, warbirds.... and this sim fits the bill pretty darn well if I must say so myself. And of course I obviously must.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Don't sweat it... and forgive me if I seem a tad long fingered.... I am tired as all get out... and I didn't get to fly like I wanted to because between my PC issues and my job... all I can do with relative certainty of not having a system crash lately is post here... that and did I mention the few St. Paulie Girls I ran into in my fridge once I dragged myself home.... anyway..... get the 46 thing. If you are in the states then order it from Go Gamer.com (http://www.gogamer.com/IL-2-Sturmovik-1946--I--PC-Simulations_stcVVproductId7274576VVcatId444808VVvi ewprod.htm).

46 is the whole shebang, the big enchelada, the whole 9 yards, everything in the series that counts.... no patching no fuss no muss....

You can start out with whatever settings you like.. but if you have a decent rig and the slightest intrest in warbirds, flight sims or any kind of challenge... I'm talking the kind of thing that will make you get out of bed after you turned off your PC and retired... mumbling to yourself... "I can make that landing.. I know I can..." as you reboot for one more attempt to land on that bucking carrier, shoot down that pesky bandit or hit that elusive target... before the AA rips you to shreds... then this sim is for you and in a few weeks you'll be like the rest of us... and then the upgrade fever will take hold and you will be lost.

If you're interested in WW2 flight sims and you have an ounce of patience, you'll love Sturmi like the rest of us. A lot here have been playing this for years and there's a good reason. It's fun, challenging and has legs.

And with the new DVD, you've come at a mighty fine time. Welcome aboard. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
