What is with the new spitfires? I've never seen a spit with that type of intake on it.

My first impression is that they are for desert combat being that they have desert paint schemes and that would make the odd nose a Trop Filter??

O.K. so all the Spit experts chime in and fill a brotha in on these machines, including any differences to the other Spit Vs we have.

That's exactly right. The filter on the Vcs are Vokes filters fitted to aircraft flying in North Africa, and in the far East.

Is there a difference in the flight characteristics though? Top speed change? seems like it would with that unaerodynamic hood orniment.

B.T.W. that 4 cannon spit is flying death, whew...

Basically...when it was decided that there was a need for more resources put into North Africa and the Mediteranian they hastily lashed up the latest Spitfires off the line (brand new 4 cannon Mark Vc's with universal wing armament types) and put the Volks airfilter on it (to keep the dust out and prevent the engine from prematurely seizing up). They didn't have alot of time and it was sort of a hastily done fit. I think speed was reduced by something like 20-30mph off the top.

Most 4 cannon Vc's were modified to 2 cannon Vc's after arrival at Malta as the recoil and performance loss. One Spitfire pilot stalled his plane at 30,000 feet (or higher) on an intercept when one of his cannons jammed.

There was a later field modified filter (Aboukir I think it was called) that was fitted which didn't have just a massive protrusion out the front. Further research on air filters later lead to what you can see fitted on the Mark VIII and IX.

Pingu, the 4 cannon Spit fires all 4 at once.

Tony Jonsson (the pilot in my sig) did fly the 2 cannon version during operation Torch, he mentioned in his biography that the filter altered the flight charachteristic of the Spitfire a bit, but he didn't go into any details about it. He got his first kill flying that version though.

A bit funny, but this did happen to me while testing the "4.0 patch" in the QMB, flying the Mk. IX. One cannon got jammed, and when I opened fire after that, the plane almost turned 180 degrees http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

That sounds about right from what I've read http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
