If you order your NO to measure the depth under the keel there is a faint sonar ping as he sends the signal to the bottom and it bounces back. Is this sound detectable by escorts? I had an encounter my last patrol were the destroyer actually turned back towards me for another sweep after i had ordered a measurment of the depth under the keel. However, i do not know if this was due to the measurement or something else.

Yes the Radar is detectable which is why U Boat captains didn't use it often

I think he was referring to the depth under keel check that uses a sonar ping. Yes, that is detectable. Only use it when either (a) the escort knows your location, or (b) when there are no escorts around.

Rgr that Nukem, was the depth under keel i was refering to and not radar. Thanks for the information, had a feeling that it was detectable.

Happy hunting!
