View Full Version : OT/ Getting blocked.

Do you ever get the impression that life doesn`t want you to be successful? Y`know, something good happens, you go to grab it then - blocked?

It`s not like anyone has it against you or is trying to stop you... just life seems to say, "No, m8. It ain`t happening, that`s not your fate."

Even if you have a talent that makes you think you should get somewhere? But then again it`s not just talent is it? But the will to persevere through all the blocks of life.

It`s probabaly all psychological.

Hmm, answered my own question...

Sorry, pointless post.

Without going into detail, if you're able to post here you're living a charmed life compared to most. Things don't work out for any number of reasons, and that leaves you with only two ways of looking at it.

1. You're doomed, might as well just lay down and die, as that was it it's now over.

2. Thank heavens that didn't work as it just made ten gazillion other possibilities something to go for.

Half full or half empty thing I suppose.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Well, yes. Life can be crappy, but then of course, it could be much worse. For instance, I have a great daughter who for some weird reason thinks I`m wonderful, I`ve got through a zillion pretty dangerous episodes in the past 15 years, Even at my age I reckon I`m fitter than when I was 19...

Normally I wouldn`t post on silliness like this, since I don`t think we should, so I am a little surprised by my own action.

But hey, everyone has their little troughs, even you, LEBillfish. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You need talent and a bit of luck sometimes, but as LEBillfish says, it's not like you're living in an empty barrel eating rice. There will be more opportunities, and who knows, had you gotten this one, you might have missed the really big one.

This is a far cry from trolling because you DON'T have a life. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I don't know how many times I thought life was dumping on me when it turned out she was just steering me in another direction.

Hehehe...case in point. When I enlisted in the Marines I wanted to get into computers/networking so I went open 2800 which basically gauranteed me something in that area as geeks were in high demand. Marine Corps said, "No. Yer gonna be a cable splicer..."

Well, I went kicking and screaming knowing full well that telephony was a dead end career. Now...15 years later...it's the best thing that ever happened to me (next to my lovely wife and children, of course). I'm the senior telecom tech in a group of four techs for a large corporation, responsible for the network infrastructure, PBX programming (just a big computer after all) and, occasionally, I get to use power tools!

Meanwhile, our ISD staff of 50 or so people are constantly fighting for promotions, fighting for training, fighting for office space, and holding meeting after meeting after meeting. They hold meetings to talk about when to hold all the other meetings. And four of 'em were network techs in the Marine Corps! How's that for irony?

Next month I'll be in Mexico for two weeks to oversee the voice/data turn up of a new factory we built and I'll be attending a BICSI conference in Las Vegas after that...

Life is gooooooood.

I too feel "blocked" on some things in my life. Feeling blocked has actually made me block myself once in a while, but I find that when I lighten up and just push ahead with a positive outlook, things work out pretty well. It's hard to do that every day though.

My latest little self help has been this billboard which hit the US streets a few months back.

There's a book called The Road Less Travelled by Scott Peck that's pretty good for getting you in the groove. It's big on serendipity and being open to possibilities and so on. It might help you start to feel unblocked.

Despite its name it really is quite sensible and doesn't expect you to kiss flowers or anything.

Here. (http://www.amazon.com/ROAD-LESS-TRAVELED-Psychology-Traditional/dp/0684847248)

SeaFire, things change. It may take time but things really will look up. I've felt a similar way myself.

Stick at it mate, whatever it is you're down about. Persistance always pays off. It finally did for me a couple of months back and everything is falling in to place. Finally.

I`m the proof that luck does matter. And it`s not a little does matter.I was never the brightest one on paper but I always accomplished what I wanted.Maybe not at the first try or the 2nd but life is going the right course for me.

To answer the question I do often feel something does not want me to be better. No matter how hard I tried some things it never worked.
That said, the above paragraph refers to the important things in life while the 2nd to the little things I always wanted.

But a different attitude helped me always. I`m just a seed of sand wondering around a gloobe. And there`s a lot of other seeds to get in my way.It MUST be and it will be.There`s no special thing that decides that I should be always the winner.I play more or less by the same rules as other people.Understanding those rules and good usage of them is the skill a winner must posess. So it is a view that is a bit further from the particulary personal POV.

Also I think NOTHING comes without effort. Little steps, long way but systematic advancement.

I do not know how it`s in the other world spots but I can say with confidence that where I live information does not play that big of a role. The intelligence is the key.How not to cheat and accomplish the same aim with different measures.

On a sidenote not everyone can make a huge career. There has to be some losers

while it took me a while to come to this conclusion I'm now glad that "success" doesn't come easy,

That way those who just "want" to be successful never will be.Only those who are willing to work hard then fail, work harder, fail again, work harder again maybe again to fail only to be fueled to succeed WILL Succeed.

It's hard for a reason. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

BTW enthusiasm alone will ALWAYS beat natual talent alone. So really if your born with natual talent you should be happy cause it's easier to learn enthusiasm then to learn natual talent http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, Seafire, I do know what you mean. Case in point my Daddy (God rest his soul) was a course gambling man. He played the daily, then illegal, numbers in New York City. One day we were returning from a visit to relatives when he realized he hadn't gotten his last number in.

All the way home we stopped at phone booth after phone booth, trying in vain to get his number in. We failed. Later that night we got the number and my dad would've hit it straight for big money. He sighed and looked at me with a weariness I'd never seen and said.

"Just goes to show you boy... If it ain't for ya, it just ain't for ya."

I've never forgotten that little life lesson.

"You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, sometimes you get what you need"

It's why depression is such a sad illness, robs people of their will/energy.

This reminds me of a quote:

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."

Determination>Talent...unless we're talking about art. You cant learn to be an artist. That requires a natural talent to begin with, which can then be honed.

A few years ago, I was assigned to be my company's field engineering representative for a US Army technology demonstration exercise at Ft Irwin, just north of Barstow, in California's High Desert. In the early summer.

For four straight weeks, six and a half days a week, I got up at oh dark thirty, drove my rented compact car the forty miles out to the base, and then just before dawn climbed into an open (the vehicles ahead tended to throw rocks up into the windshield of the following vehicle, so after the first week the glass was replaced with slitted plywood) HumVee and joined the convoy out to the operations area, where I sweltered and breathed dust, wiped sunblock out of my eyes, guzzled water at every opportunity, avoided venomous insects and snakes, ate MREs, and tried really hard to teach young soldiers how to use and care for our equipment for 10 to 16 hours a day, while the brigade's commanding colonel blamed us for every little glitch (the miserable SOB was constantly having his technical staff change arrangements around in one location or the other for the sake of putting his personal 'stamp' on things, without considering the ripple effect with other units). On a good day, the work was nearly thankless, and thoroughly sucked.

...except for the fifteen minutes every day when the Port O John guy came to clean out and replenish the portable latrines. These guys would come out in their tank trucks, suck out the contents of each portable toilet, replenish its chemical tanks and toilet paper, and then move on to the next location, followed by an incredibly foul reek, which mercifully usually evaporated quickly in the 5% humidity.

At this point, my fellow tech reps and I would look at each other and say "Now THAT job REALLY sucks."

Since then, the memory of the guys driving those tank trucks has served to remind me that while life has served me up the occasional sh*t sandwich, it has not been a steady diet.

cheers

Not a pointless post whatsoever..

I have come to the conclusion if one is suppose to have something you will get it and if one isn't no amount of working at it will get you it..

must be something to do with "Karma"

who you f-d over in a previous life comes back to haunt you somehow.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

since I ain't a "f-you over" kind of guy I truly wonder who I was in a previous life..? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Just to tell you this again..

If it is ment to be you will get it. If it isn't no way will it happen. You may be and will be teased you "might" get it but you won't..

The only way these rules change occassionaly is if you wish real bad for something but i tell you this..

BE VERY VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

watch the movie "Bedazzled" as a good refrence
