Need to had some higher resolutions to your pole. I use 1600X 1200 32bit 75Mhz Avg. 30- 50 Max 844. Why? Just because I can........

Why 1152x864x32?
Well, it's what my Windows resolution is, on a 19" CRT.
And it looks good, and performance is good enough too.

My 40 year old eyes have no problems with it ...
(though, lately on some mission in heavy weather I never saw the ground objects I had to attack ...)

1024x768x32, I can run much higher but then visibility gets porked and I can't see three feet in front of my face. Not a problem offline, but online in full switch servers its a pain.

I like the look of hi res and fly it offline. But the larger pixels at lower resolutions (800X600X32) make it a little easier for me to pick up approaching aircraft. Online, that's my choice.

640x480x32x'Excellent Mode' => very fast and very easy to spot others(this is the main reason). When the action starts you will never notice the resolution. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Same here for both online and offline. My PC is not too happy about 1600x1200 for online play, and I don't want to give up perfect mode and AA/AF either http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif.
Is interesting how people reduce resolution so dramatically (800x600 or even 640x480) just to spot planes better. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
Give up all the beauty of the game just to get an extra kill? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I find that boosting the resolution is less of a performance hit than boosting antialiasing. So I boosted my resolution up and turned down my antialiasing and I get the best of both worlds: less jagged edges and more framerates.

1280x960 here. Not much of a frame hit between that and 1024x768 (@2-3 frames). The ratio is the same so on my rig it just looks like 1024x768 with better resolution.

1280x1024 here on Hyundai L70 TFT/flat panel.Guys used say that a CRT(old style!) monitor on big res like 1600x1200 was the best for sharp images. Is that true or is the flat panel the new daddy?

Online and offline, 1280x1024x32. No AA/AF. I have an LCD monitor so going less than the native resolution (1280) looks disproportionately ugly. With a 9800pro I want consistently good fps online so I run in Excellent mode. I might consider using AA, but I am suspicious of what it might do to dot visibility, and the performance hit might be too much anyway.

Edit conf.ini:

width=1280
height=1024

And maybe change
SaveAspect=1 to SaveAspect=0 (or the other way around, I dunno) to prevent bars top/bottem-left-right in cockpit!

Today, 1024x768x16 is not too bad for me.

Any of you have reasons why you would prefer 1024x768x16 vs. 1024x768x32? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

My eye problem varies day to day. I guess my eyes are in transition from bad to worse. I've been wearing contact lenses since 1982. Just in the last few months my vision with contacts is becoming a problem. With my glasses on, my vision is pretty good, even though the contacts are stronger prescription.

The color quality is better with x32. Just look at smoke and dust effects in x16 versus x32.

Due to a lousy system (AMD900, 256RAM and 64 Meg Geforce 3) im forced to run at 800 x 600x32 to maintain reasonable framerates, although I can sometimes pump it up to 1024 x 768 if the missions arnt too demanding.
(Visibility, Lighting & Ground detail set to medium)
Forget about AAA etc when flying, but I pump it up to 4x when viewing the recorder to nab screenshots.

I can only fantasise about Perfect water etc http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

Wow..... and yet you can still run the sim with such a old rig. Not too shabby. When you upgrade you are going to flip out.

Even if you can't see flicker, a low refresh rate can cause you to get "buggy eyes". Pump it up to the highest your monitor supports for whatever resolution you're using.

Edit: If you have V-Sync on, higher refresh rate can also help frame rates if your vid card is bouncing of the refresh rate.

Thanks for the tips, y'all. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Weirdly enough, 70Hz and 75Hz flicker my screen. 60Hz, 85Hz, and 100Hz do not. My eyes are truly weird now.

I'll see how the game play is at 85Hz.

Hi Guys,

1280x960x32 @ 85Hz on a Mitsubishi DP2070SB CRT

This is also my desktop res.

(1280x1024 is 'out of ratio' for me, so I don't go there unless I have to)

For my eyes, I find anti-aliasing almost unnecessary at 1280x960 and it clobbers my frame rates a fair bit, so I don't bother with it.

I Use 1600x1200 in games like Call of Duty but in FB/AEP it starts to push my system a bit too hard when the going gets frantic. (Even more noticeable in LOMAC.)

I think this is where I'll stay until my next major system upgrade/changeover, due in about 18 months time.

Best regards to all,

panther3485

The poll stinks. A) No one uses 16bit. Those are unnecessary options.

B) Most people use much higher resolutions.

Me? 1680 x 1050. In PF 1360 x 1024.

han freak solo
08-14-2005, 03:24 PM
Obi_Kwiet, you're our only hope! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

All the polls are always limited. 5 choices only, no matter the topic. I just picked out the middle ground shown in the game menu on my rig.

The poll currently shows 9 "no one's" using 16 bit. Educate me on why 16 bit would be an unneccesary option. Really, no sarcasm.

Lstarosta points out, "The color quality is better with x32. Just look at smoke and dust effects in x16 versus x32."

But, my eyes can't make out much difference anymore.

A limitation will definitely be my hardware which is relatively inexpensive compared to many rigs and is 1.5 years old now. By choice, I will never have the latest and greatest rig.

What card do you have HAn Solo??

Most cards today should be able to do 1024x768x32 without any problem. Mine is an old TI4600 but runs great on medium/excellent at 1024x768x32. (with a XP2500+ and 768 ram)

Rather than running it at 800x600x32 I would knock the bits down to 16 and play at 1024x768x16. That way planes wouldnt be so pixellated far away.

I know the 16 bit colour isnt as nice but its not noticable when u are dogfighting at 500kph.

DONT play at 1152x864 res, cards these days are optimised to run best at 800x600 / 1024x768 / 1600x1200. You will get the best performance with one of these, not the strange 'inbetween' resloutions.

SithSpeeder
08-14-2005, 05:16 PM
Hmmm. 800x600 when online and flying cockpit on servers with no icons, 21" CRT monitor. Although the server dictates at what range a dot becomes visible for all, with lower resolution, the absolute area of the dot is larger (more visible).

In other words, if the server defines the range that a dot is visible as 10 km, on an 800x600 screen, the one pixel takes up 1/(800x600) [just under 1/500,000] of the screen.

On a 1600x1200 resolution screen (same monitor size), the one pixel takes up 1/(1600x1200) [almost 1/2,000,000] of the screen--much harder to spot IMO.

As you'd expect, the dot is effectively four times larger at the 800x600 resolution. When playing with clearly better and much more regular pilots than I, I regularly spot the enemy quicker because of this.

And in the heat of battle, you never notice it. But when taking screenshots and such, they do look uglier than when everything is "turned up".

My video card can handle more than my aging eyes can. That's the whole point I started this thread. Right now I'm still doing okay with the 1024x768x16 or 1024x768x32. But, sometimes my eyes can only deal with the 800x600x32.

Whatever resolution I've used from 800x600 to 1600x1200 I very quickly got used to it.
My ageing eyes had a problem with 1024x768 doing anything on the computer with my 17' so I lowered it but in FB it's all the same once you get used to it.

Here's a vote for 1400*1050 @16bit. 32bit cuts my fps (30-350) in half.

Don't fly online, and I use map icons, so visbility is less of an issue- and I don't like surprises. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hmmm, I`m having a similar problem. I was off flying Online for 6 months and started new only about a month ago. I`m finding it much harder to see aircraft targets especially when they fly low against the ground - they just vanish! It was never this bad before.

I can`t figure out whether it`s 4.01 or being away for 6 months or the resolution or... my eyes.

I`m 39 and am wondering if perhaps I need reading glasses. But a guy shouldn`t begin to need reading specs until around 40 - 45 at the earliest and it affects long-sighted people sooner (Hyperopic, I think). I am short-sighted (myopic). This is due to the weakening of the eye musles.

I`m going to return to 800X600X32 (which I used to always have) and see what happens. er... and I have 2 grey hairs already. NOOOOOO!
