Today I dusted off my well worn copy of il2 and have been having a lot of fun noticing all the things that have changed between the original and the latest version of PF.

One thing that really stood out was the sound. I had forgotten how good the sound used to be. The sound in il2 is fantastic, what happened?

Could is be FPS

Or are the later sounds actually closer to what you'd actually hear inside the cockpit, flybys, etc.

Coule be but why not give an option to let people keep the old sound if their system can handle it.

It's fine with me...convince Oleg. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Seriously, I think the program is so large now that Oleg is making tradeoffs of what to add or take away from the core. Sound files can be pretty large, and you combine a grouping of large files along with alternative groupings you'd have even more overhead.

Remember, the PF was on 2 cds and Oleg excluded items for later distribution. There wasn't room on 2 cds to put it all.

The Il-2 sound is okay because there where not so many aircraft flyable.

However, the biggest weak point was and still is, the (engine) sound. CFS really has a strong point, their engines sounds pretty authentic while Il-2 PF sounds a bit 'fake' to me.

people proved that real pilots couldn't hear anything except the engine, so Oleg changed it.

switch off the engine, pump up the volume and you have to old sound, with switches, flaps, gears and whatever

I don't like the realistic "engine only" sound, an option for "unrealistic" quiet engine would be nice

Even the engine sound is very unrealistic...

I still don't think it was possible to hear someone come up behind you while straddling a Merlin or Daimler Benz engine.

It's odd how Oleg wants so badly to preserve realism (a good thing) but relents on letting one hear the sound of a plane coming up behind them.

So much for bouncing someone. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

That's precisely the point, the engine sounds now too artificial, it's a pain...

the one thing I miss from the old Il2 is the sound of the bullets flying past the static camera or F3 flyby mode...but if every projectile has a sound file, well....s,l,i,d,e, s,h,o,w,

I find it weird that I can hear a Mk108 cannon up to 5km away http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/354.gif

This is because your head has been bounced 5 Km away by the 108 shell. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

But on the rare occaision that I get the other guy. I can hear him crash over the sound of my engine. Does this sort of thing happen to everybody? I've always wondered about that...
