I always turn the skin download off..big difference in lag no matter what your connection.

If I get these skins off the internet and put them with the stock skins, will I then see that skin online (if they are using it with the same name of course) without it having to be downloaded?

I don't know. If the skin isn't loaded into the online cache then I don't think that it is exempt from being downloaded, though I'm not positive on this.

There was once a thread here about not renaming skins in the folder to save on time, but since the patch, who knows if it's the same.

A skin downloaded into the netcache of one player can be transplanted to the netcache of another player for immediate effect. I suspect that IL2 generates a unique longstring name from the properties of a particular bmp file.

So if you want other people to immediately see your skins and not have to download them, get a hold of a netcache copy and distribute that.

Above method is a good suggestion. It should also be noted that even if the server has downloads off and you have them on you will still get the skin transfers they just dont display (atleast this is what I am seeing but perhaps its taking a while for the transfers). Wether the transfers are from client to client or thru the middleman (server) I dont know.

Through the server - can't have all those clients talking directly to each other can we?!/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

with skin DL turned off i STILL seem to DL pilot skins

i have aquestion of my own .....

with skin DL off i dont seem to see other ppls skins ( understandable ) but do you totally block all transfers ?

i.e. do you stop your custom skin uploading to them ?

also ..... if a host has skin DL off does it affect him only ? can the ppl he is hosting still see skins ( custom ) of others ?

if host has DL set too off then can others still be abel to see your custom skin ?

The server (host) 'serves' the skins if DL is on. If it is off then you should not see the skins of others, unles the FB coding still shows skins that you already have in your net cache.

As above.

Would be nice to see a definitive answer on this /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I brought this up a couple of pages ago.
How about UBI "sanctions" some skins, download to paint schemes folder and they show up in the pull down menu.
I see a few planes have LOTS of 'factory' choices.
With the add-on coming and ******* and the **** there is certainly going to be serious clammering for some none default skins.

But to answer your question, yes- if the person has the same skin as you do and skin download is on, they see it.If skin download is off they will only see whats in the standard pull down.
If the name is the same (dont rename skins after downloading) there wont be any lag.(skin DL on)

Lets hope SDL can be worked out somehow, so many cool skins it sucks to sacrifice game play for skins.

If the server has it off and you have them on you will still download the file just not display. I played a while back on a beta...no no I...mean not like a 1.1 version server. There was a certain aircraft with the numer 51 in it and the letter that comes after lmno..._ . Anyway I saw no custom skins as externals were off and the server had downloads off. Yet a quick trip thru my cache the other day showed a skin by leadspitter which the only time I have flown with him was on that server. He just recently made the file availiable. Either I am wrong in that the server did have downloads on and I was'nt patient, its just a (not alpha but)... ___ , or skins are still being transferd reguardless, and the on off just determines wether they display. It was like this in the past so perhaps it has not changed. A simple test could answer this.

it doesnt work that way rbj but should, I requested this feature to oleg but didnt get a response

if 10 computers have the same named skins

the game should associate it seeing the plane sending a list of skins rather then sending the actual skin and renaming it 312938938319. Hopefully they will make same skin names viewable with skin DLs off

even with skin dls off it will send pilot skins and custom regiment skins and theres no way to turn that off.
