Hi all,

It was late morning and I was flying with my gunner Ivan over Smolensk. The sector had been quiet lately and all seemed peaceful..

I cursed my lack of concentration, when out of nowhere a Me 110C cut across my path. Maybe he was as surprised as me!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/MB_Avro/grab0002-5.jpg

I pulled up into a climb whilst searching for the enemy! And I saw two of them! Why had I been so asleep??

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/MB_Avro/grab0005-2.jpg

I turned towards the higher enemy and opened fire. My canons had their convergence set to 400 meters. At this range, I had a chance of a hit!

I was lucky! One engine was damaged!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/MB_Avro/grab0007-3.jpg

I followed him as he dived. I managed to destroy him with a couple of long range shots.

With the help of Ivan, I located the second enemy. He was almost beyond my range but I still fired!

A hit!

I closed in and finished the job!!

I reckon one of the AIs most unrealistic and annoying (well until you vaporise them!)habits is when a wingman will glide by you a few metres overhead blindly following his leader...

Yeah the Sturmovik (all versions)can surprise careless 109 and especially 190 fliers...Ironically I probably use the purpose built IL2"I" bomber killer version least of all the series and its perhaps even one of the least used of ALL the planes in the flyable list.

Got a serious kicking flying a 109 against two hotshot russian IL2 pilots on the great YAMA IL2 server recently .When the IL2s fly together in a ring as they did in real life you are in BIG trouble.

Cool story. I recall starting a campaign recently in the IL-2M, and getting more air kills in the first mission then ground kills, three Ju-87s and a 109, and one single tank. Yeah, my air to ground needs work. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I made the mistake when I first got online of underestimating a Sturmovik pilot. Never again. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Hi all,

My mission illustrates the capabilities of aircraft in this sim. We all are aware of the Spitfire,P-51,Me 109 etc. but it's worth exploring further.

The il2-3 with cannons set to 400 meters can be deadly. But you have to be patient http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The Me 110s were set at 'Average' in the mission.

More missions soon...

IL2 is a real killer especially in the earlier scenarios.

The IL-2 is a tremendous bomber killer, and can come as a real rude shock to blue fliers who dont expect them to dogfight.

The Sturmovik makes a suprisingly good B&Z bird in the early war years.

The Russians felt that way in 1942, be sure! It was the premier interceptor in early 1942.

This plane can be deadly.Especily when it is under estimated by the enemy!I've scored kills, and rtb, being able to see through both wings like a colander. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif Gotta love it!!!

Online I remember flying round in a circle at 50 feet with landing flaps down and a queue of 109s being unable to shoot me down. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Besides, it's a very pleasant plane to fly!

IL2 was great bakc in WWII and is even betterin the sim. But always I see it climbing like rocket at high AoA I must laugh!

If there are bombers in the area I love taking an Il2-I. Although not so maneuverable it is a total killing machine when the enemy is in your sights. Plus it has the survivability of the entire IL-2 series. It doesn't get much better than that.

AI Sturmoviks when you request them to 'engage the enemy' will shoot down German aces.

I was playing the Il-2 on Leningrad front and I was pratically wondering when I'm going to die.

IL2 is underpowered and a real lead-sled, but it's armor and firepower are stout indeed and as long as you keep enough "E", it can be a formiddable aerial opponent without a doubt.

I love the way mg's can be seen bouncing off the top armor plate in the thing.

Ha! that is nothing. I was once a Russian A-20 ace! Shot down Me-109's and Me-110's both! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

I flew it a lot in the original game. I remember back in V1.2 I think, just before FB was released, I was flying online over the Vyazama winter map in an early single seater version. I was jumped by a single 190A4. I engaged aggressively and scored a luck shot on his engine, causing him to bail. His comment in chat was priceless... "I've never seen an IL2 flown that way before."

I miss those old days of the sim.

I landed it once only with rudder (ailerons and elevators were disabled). Was on UKD2 IIRC.

Now that takes some doing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I managed it once with no elevators and had to juggle throttles and flaps. I presume you did the same?

I loved it, once when I flew IL2, when I figured that after my gears stucked I could manually pump (like on I16) them down for a nice landing http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif .

That was first time I noticed this stuff is possible.

Yes, because of lack of ailerons I had to combine rudder with engine torque and flaps to change direction and roll. During final descent towards airfield I left flaps alone in one of the positions to get the feeling of descent rate - was only riding it with throttle and rudder.

I hope I still have ntrk of it somewhere.
