Well after playing SH3 for the past month I was ready to go back to IL2 BUT THEN I simply saw Arma at EB games and bought it, I hadn't read much about it and didn't check the forums to see how many, if any problems this game had. Usually before I buy a game now I look into it so I don't screw myself over and buy a carp game, because DOES it happens much more than often. I took the gamble. After installing it was all good, worked fine(which really surprised me). I got pretty good fps on not a normal graphics setting but not rockbottem either. That was what really surprised me I wasn't sure if was even going to have playable frame rates seeing as I have NVIDIA 7300Le for a video card. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

When I first started playing it reminded me of the first time I had played IL2, in about 2 seconds I was dead, and then in another 2seconds I was dead again. The AI at times can seem like they know what they're doing but at other times are plain ******ed, One time I was telling my squad to run across the street to the other side and of course they screw it up, they go and take about 2 steps from behind cover and then they are standing there like the idiots they are shooting their guns not hitting the anything except the ground and they get gunned down by one man. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

It's pretty immersive when your squad mates aren't screwing up. You can here the crash of the waves against the shores see the larks sing and fly (or was that a sea gull?) and here the wind in the trees. There's also lots of other small things they added in there like bullet ricochet, that kind of stuff. The environment is almost completely destructible, you can destroy all buildings in the game and some you can even go into. As for The towns and cities seem to small. The missions are hard (AND DON'T GET EASIERIER) and if you play veteran mode you can't save. I find flying very very annoyingly hard. When you're in a helicopter against a tank or two or three...guess who wins the tanks. They're like snipers and take you out with there machine gun. As for damage model there isn't much except for tanks. Tanks guns can get damaged, and you can become immobilized and a few other things. As for all other vehicles they just get the good old health bar, or at least planes and helicopters do. AND THE AIR PLANES NEED A BETTER FLIGHT MODEL!

There is also a built in mission editor that even the village idiot could use. It can make basically any mission you want, the more complicated you make your mission the harder it gets to make it. I mean this by having to learn how to make scripts and learning how to use triggers.

As far as modding the game goes you aren't really limited in any way. You can make your own vehicles, weapons, change AI behavior (I think) ect.

As for all you movie makers out there you aren't left out of the equation either. From what I have seen you some pretty awesome movies, although you do have to learn scripting sigh...

ARMA is the most realistic shooter that I have ever played and maybe the best of all shooters. But that wouldn't be fair to say seeing as I haven't played Red Orchestra yet. One day when a great flight sim, sub/naval sim, and REALISTIC shooter like this merge we will truly have the most wonderful game ever.

Bottom line great game

So for now IL2 will have to wait (again)

Yeah it's a great game - certainly the best fps next to RO.
However you are wrong about the damage models - most vehicles have a basic, but working dm.
For example just go into the mission editor and place a blackhawk somewhere, then grab yourself a m163 and go for the tail rotor - enjoy.
At least the wheels on cars are handled seperate aswell.
As are all glass surfaces.

The airplane FM is pretty messed up, but at least the irrational energy bleeding and the "two way yaw" are on the to-do list for the upcoming patch.
I can't agree on the choppers though - the only things I really miss ( compared to other heli-sims)are real tourge and a change to the to high compression at higher speeds.
You probably have problems with nocking out tanks because you fight in a sub-optimal way.
Do it like the real gunships do:
Sneek up into firing range in NOE flight ( about 3 km are sufficient with the stock hellfires, if you want LOBL mode just download the mapfact Apache)
Then pop up, hit hard and withdraw behind your cover again.
If they spot you and lay supressive fire, sneak back and approach on a different vector.

Conclusively I'd say that Arma is great for helis; even for the single fact that you have a dynamic battlefield with all aspects of modern combat to fly and fight in.

Up to date, good.
You can read through some threads under the general section here (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?s=67a201b8a4998b545923e27b545a914b;a ct=SC;c=14)
or have a look at this. (http://www.bistudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=49&Itemid=68)

In general the patch will be coming in a matter of weeks after the release of Queen's Gambit ( the first addon).

Btw.
If you'd like some helicopter MP flights, I'd be happy to get you started ( seeing that I use Arma almost exclusively for flying in MP ).

I gotta admit, sitting in a helo with a squad being ferried by a competent pilot has got to be one of the most realistically immersive feelings in a soldier sim ever.

It`s also a first in extra realism with TIR too.

Now that I got a 2900XT Im enjoying the game as I can pretty much max it out at 1680x1050 16:10. If I could only get it to recognize my CH Fighterstick, CH Pro Throttle, and CH pedals I would be excited.

Damn, the graffix suck, don't they? You should really try something like Novalogics' Joint Operations or Delta Force Extreme if you want realistic. The graphics are waaaaay better, and you can fly several helos, even with your whole crew aboard. I have both, but I uninstalled them, and all of my other shooters. I prefer the sims over shooters now.

Thought that too with my 7950GT until I got my 2900XT! Huge difference when you can jack it up!

Always cracks me up when people complain about graphics, but don`t consider that may be it`s their low settings or graphics card capability.

For me... Arma just sucks.
CTD every 10 mins, and it adds little to the genre IMO.
BF2 as arcade as it is (sans realism mods) is a rock solid engine.
I was already riding about in choppers with other dudes in Joint Ops coops.. although the AI is pure suckage in that game.

I just can't like Arma, it's dirty. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif
I will say this though, the concept is good, and player animations are cool, but that's about it.

Project Reality Mod is the only way to play BF2 IMO. http://www.realitymod.com/ Well I dont even call it it BF2 anymore since I only play PRM and its awesome.

Oh and I feel that is one shooter that you can play just fine with an average of 30fps for simple reason the game play is rather slow unlike BF2 for example where you want to average around 50fps. IMHO.

Hey guys, I apologize for taking this way off of it's original topic, but how do the games you mentioned compare to the Rainbow Six franchise?

I have been playing my copy of Raven Shield for a looong time now and finally got a decent computer so I thought I would get a newer game. I like the somewhat slower pace and having to plan your attack aspect of the game where you aren't able to take 50 shots and then can heal yourself with a first aid kit someone left for you, you can't carry 12 different rifles etc. (Don't get me wrong, I still like those games for a fun shoot 'em up night) I had heard that R6 games had gone somewhat arcade and weren't as good anymore.

Any advice for my next somewhat realistic shooter game? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Arma, and trust me you won't be able to take 50 hits then hill with a medic pack. You might just take one hit then you won't be able to stand.

Arma has a massive enviorment to play I think it's about 400km sq.

Lots of people also really like Red Orchastra for its realisim, but I havent had a chance to play that one yet.

In one Arma mission, I had to get away from a BMP/tank destruction mission in the dark. I had to dodge and duck, then creep. I avoided a firefight because death is almost instantaneous. The enemy helo was searching for me, so i jumped into a lake to keep hidden, but forgot about my infra-red goggles. Lost the goggles, most of equipment and I think my rifle. Almost drowned too.

Then I had to crawl (because I busted myself up swimming) in the dark for what seemed like 5 hours (in reality about an hour, I could`ve quit but I was stubborn) through bushes all the way to base.

Arma has got to be the toughest firs person soldier `sim` i`ve ever tried. And I say SIM seriously.

S!

What is the problem exaclty?
The rudder paddles or the stick?
If it recognizes the stick ( can't test right now) and your problem is that it's "one controller only" I'd suggest the following:
Assign/ programm the rudder to give mouse x-axis input, then map the rudder input ingame to the mouse x-axis.
Should work like a charm ( once you fiddeled a little with mouse sensitivity).

I ducked under water and wondered, "i wonder if I can drown?" DOH! Moments later I was gurgling.

Even when I crawled through a shallow pool I took drowning pain from getting submerged for a bit in it.

I just sneaked into the camp, got into one of the tanks, blasted the other tanks to bitsk, tore up the camp and drove home with the tank. Attached satchel charges to it when I was near to the extraction point and blew the thing sky high. It's the oldest trick in the book from OFP campaigns. Did that mission in 40 minutes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
