Saw a Catalina flying from the Suffolk Va airport today ....man that thing is a beast! I went by the Fighter Factory at the airport and they have the following:

B25 Mitchell?
Spitfire
Hurricane
P-40
Catalina
Avenger
Post WW2 Skyraider

All are flyable and you can walk up to them and touch them (its a private collection not a museum)
I was hoping to post some pictures but didnt take camera maybe next time.

Thanks for sharing, I live a 1000kms away so I don't think I'll be able to visit any time soon.

On another note, I think Gibbage is still looking for pictures of the INTERIOR of the Cat- he might appreciate it if you could take specific pictures for him, you could PM him and find out-

The title was Catalina @ Suffolk Va then I changed it to "RBJ Rulez" as a joke, then changed it to --- so it would fade away

What part of the Cat do you want pictures off?

I don't want to bother, but, if PBY project goes ahead, how are they going to implement 1st person hidro water take-offs and landings?

In FB there're no flyable hidros, and they don't even let you use the IA hidros in QMB.

Okay Rhett very cool. Now get a bloody camera and go back /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

A private collection hey? Owned by one person? Impressive. There's a guy here in Vancouver who has a Spitfire and a Mosquito in his hangar. He also ownes a fleet of Lears etc so it's quite a big hangar. I also didn't have a camera when I was there. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Cool. It's nice that some private collectors don't mind if others have a look at the history that they are preserving.

I stumbled upon a link to a webpage with that Suffolk, VA-based Catalina.

There has been a bit of local press here in Australia about a Cat that is being returned here for restoration. It's been used as a water bomber in potugal for the last couple of years. The poor old best is in such bad shape that she isn't rated to land on the water. She is due to do a few flybys over Sydney Harbour in the next week or so (Used to be a large cat base at Watsons bay). The plane is going to be refurbished south of Wollongong and returned to WWII livery.

Interesting that Gibbage is looking for Cat info - I would not have thought there would have been much problem as there are still a lot around (maybe not WW2 original though which is probably what he wants).

The RAAF have recently restored one to museum condition but I do not know how far they went internally. The restoration team at RAAF Amberley would probably have a lot of data though.

If anyone is desperate to 'fly' one there are at least two programmes out on Cats at the moment, both covering several different marks. One of them is a bolt-on to MS Flight Sim/CFS2 and includes some missions I believe.

My father was aircrew on them in WW2 and reading his log book is quite interesting - several 13 to 14 hour anti sub flights.

Oddly enough, I just found that Cat site yesterday by accident. Not a bad one either.
Unfortunately though, it looks as though we won't be getting the PBY for IL2-FB, because it will not be finished in time for the add-on. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
If it goes into the next sim though, Gibbage will try to make it amphibious./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

BTW- Small interesting film called "Below" about a WW2 US Submarine that is haunted...(I know it sounds lame but the movie is a hell of a lot better than it should be, and is actually quite good. I think it was a British production)
The opening scenes contain some interesting/cool shots of a PBY on patrol. Worth checking out.
