I'm sure the P51s will look good, but as far as the rest goes, I predict fail on a massive scale.

"...Lucas (serving as executive producer) was very displeased with TV director Anthony Hemingway's work, and is taking it upon himself to direct some massive reshoots. With these re-shoots come some hefty re-writes which I'm told completely change the main characters and their storylines."

I've got a bad feeling about this... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Sadly for this movie, I think most of us here are such epicures and snobs (I proudly include myself among them) that no matter what the movie is like, we will not like it. I expect - composite, fictitious, trite, hackneyed, stereotypical charterers 'based on' real people (but very obviously NOT real people). Equally fictitious and stereotypically events which will be 'expected' to tell the story. These events will be ticked off. One by one like a laundry list. For example - racist white officers who are drawn with such a transparently exaggerated obvious brush that they are as laughable as the Policeman character was on Sanford and Son. Institutional obstructionism etc. In effect the movie will 'write itself' and put little demands on the viewer. A reliance, (note I said reliance) rather than a mere presence of CGI depicting impossible aerial activity. (like Flyboys had.)

Personally, I expect to like the HBO Tuskegee Airmen - movie perhaps a little more than this effort. At least it did not rely on CGI, despite having all the characteristics I just mentioned.

This will succeed!!! Why?

1) NO Ben Affleck http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

2) NO P-40 vs Zero sequences (which only happens in Hollywood movies)

3) No lightsabers and Yoda http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

"No way y'all is gunna make me fly wi' those Red Tails as escort. Ah'd sooner vote wun as Preseedhent!"

The technology is available today to make a REALLY great WW2 movie from the visual aspect but when little details are overlooked are or just plain wrong...it really does ruin the whole film.
I hope they get the details right in this one.
If they do, it could be a really good movie.

THIS.

My fear is that we will have a movie more based on current politics than actual historical fact,
something Hollywierd is very good at.

If it's anything like the capture of U571, where the Royal Navy and the entire British contribution to WW2 was expunged, expect the Redtails pilots to be white. No need to mention the N-word or that racism ever existed! We'll be lucky if they get any of the names right. It will be a fiction that's for sure.

No doubt, but I'm still wary of this being Hollywood-ized.

Last go-around I was eagerly expecting a modern-effects version of Tora Tora Tora.....and we got a discustingly sappy melodrama in Pearl Harbor. Worst movie ever made.

Maybe we'll get lucky and Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg will do a quality WWII aerial mini series as they have for Band of Brothers and The Pacific. But wait a minute... don't they work out of Hollywood? That can't be good, now can it? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I posted something about this movie two or three years ago. I will certainly see it when it comes out, because I find the subject matter interesting enough to pay the money. I will also reserve judgment until the credits roll at the end of the movie. Coming into it with the attitude that it's going to suck and it will suck for you.

Redtails pics and video from filming in Prague (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=athETK-ba5w)

Lots more video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYN1Kzm3v8s)

I've read on WIX and a couple other places about the reshoots and rewrites. No hard evidence about what, exactly was rewritten or reshot.

Apparently from the start, several of the historical characters have been merged into single characters among other things. While Lucasfilm used REAL airplanes (including the B-17 "Pink Lady"), some people have complained about the (white) pilots wearing masks to make them look like the historical (black) pilots. I don't see a problem; if it was my P-51, you can bet I'd be the one flying it!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'm remaining cautiously optimistic about the film.

Maybe they should have asked Michael Dorn to participate. I'bet he'd do the flying himself too. I heard he owns quite a lot of planes, maybe even a P51. But I guess he's too old to display a young pilot.

They flew P-39Qs, P-40Ls, P-47Ds and P-51 Cs & Ds. They started painting thr tasisl red with the P-47s when they got old castoffs from the Checkertail Clan.. They had that yellow and black checkerboard pattern on them and the only paint in great abundance in the store room was Insignia Red... The rest is history..

One of the rumors is that the problem with the original script is it didn't follow the now compulsory Hollywood mode of one or at the most two larger than life main "heroes" (with flaws and a mutual love interest in most cases) save the world against the odds.

Instead it was scripted more like a British war film where a team of characters work together.

I loved (and bought) BoB, but really didn't like Pacific. To me they were completely different: Pacific contained too many basic mistakes, too much hollywood influence (his mates stopping firing, instead watching the machine gunner (pre MoH) in awe, mid fight?!), and the characters just didn't seem to fit the era (I can't put my finger on it, but they seemed to be acting in the current day, rather than 70 years ago). I thought the scene cutting was awkward, and didn't flow as in BoB, which along with camera positioning made spatial awareness difficult to obtain. The sound was terrible, and required concentration to pick the voices from the other sound effects, once or twice even replaying the same bit a few times would leave me clueless as to what the actor was saying. All those things together left me really unimpressed.

The picture of the Redtails and "Jar Jar Binks" is hilarious. And this is what i am afraid of if Lucas gets ahold of it. What little directing ability George Lucas had was lost in the 70's. There is absolutely no hope for this film if it is in hands.

I am not trying to be pessimistic, it's just pretty much a fact.

If you have the time and attention span to sit through this series on youtube and watch the segements where George Lucas thinks about rewritting major parts of the script, you will find out how absolutely inept Lucas is at putting a movie together. His crew members look on with too scared to have a voice in telling him how much this movie is doomed and end up just saying to him that its pretty much impossible to go back and edit out 40 minutes of stuff from this movie, because its all an intertwined cluster****.

Warning that there are some 4 letter words in this review:

I have to agree. I honestly can't think of another director less qualified to make this a successful film. I don't think anyone needs to be a clairvoyant to predict that this is going to be an epic failure.

I'm at least looking forward to the eye candy!

Now if only they manage to get hold of a couple of the EADS Bf-109s and some Flugwerk Fw-190s, or even an Me-262, we'd have some monumental dogfight scenes. Sure beats bucket loads of CGI, though this is George Lukas so I fear for the worst! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey no problem, someone showed me the link to that video series and I said "okay I will check this out and watch it for a little bit" but they are done so well I had to sit the whole way through.

Those photos like nice... but I am prepared for the B-17 pilot to keep shouting "Stay on target! Stay on target!" as they head for a german factory, as the P-51 pilot disengages his K-14 gunsight after a voice in his head tells him to "let go".

A pilot who has abilities in the force with a disengaged gyro sight is good enough to blow up a tiger tank by shooting 6 50's in its "exhaust port". Be sure. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I think the biggest problem with the IL2 community and war films is basicly this, we KNOW what to look for. We can tell a P-40 from a Spitfire ( well most of us anyway). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

So any aviation film will ripped apart by us. I just watch them now for entertainment. When I want facts, I watch a docu.

That said, I do hope the modern "PC" wave don't mess up this film and it shows what really happened back then.
