Thanks for posting them, sir. I would've missed them otherwise. That's a Griffon engine, right? Are you personally involved with this plane,or were you just lucky enough to take some pics? Maybe the upcoming cockpit pics could be "useful" to certain parties./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

yes it is a Griffon version, you can normally tell them when they are cowled because they have bulges in the tops for the rocker covers, yes i help them out with this and that but it only lives here for the summer, it departed today for its winter home after doing a superb beat up and waggle of its wings down the taxiway, wish i had mt camera with me as he came straight at me low level /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

stuff it here is the cockpit for you, have hundreds of the aircraft

Makes you wonder how many bullet-hits this wonder of an engine can withstand ...

How much difference is there between this pit and some of the other Spit varients? I'm sure some of the modellers would really appreciate those pics. Oh,and please post some of those "hundreds" of other Spit pics./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I have worked on two mk9's and a mk16 and the overall layout of the cockpit is pretty much the same. There are many difference's though. The Griffon plane's office is much more cluttered!! Most of the instruments are the same.I think its mainly engine controls, hydraulics and electrics that are different.
I kinda took it for granted when I was working on them. Didnt take many photo's of the cockpits which i regret now. The only pit photo that i think i still have is of a P47,but that was more like concorde inside.

S!

Salute Taylor

Superb photos. Really get a sense of what a monster this engine was, and how the whole plane was built around it.

Do you have shots from pilot's seat looking through gunsight? This is quite important for getting an accurate idea of what the visibility was on this aircraft.

Thanks RAF74 Buzzsaw

This aircraft was never bult to carry guns so no gun sight, it is a Mk19 and is a photo recce version hence the sky blue finish, also being a 19 it varied quite a bit from the run of the mill Spits, one major respect being it was pressurised so it does not have a side door in the cockpit, the pressurisation on this one has been disconnected long ago. the cameras were mounted behind the cockpit looking both vertically down and out the side.

The Engine in this particular MK19 being a Griffon is a modified version out of a Shackleton but has had the gearboxes from the firefly i believe mated to it internally to remove the contra rotating prop set up that the Shack has, this was necessary as no original servicable Griffons of the correct type were available.

I am a bit limited space wise on my web space to post lots of pictures so i will have to pull most of these down in a couple of days, so if anyone want to use em feel free, the aircraft has gone back for its winter maintenance but when it arrives back in the spring i can do pictures to order if you want of any aspects people want to see, but as i said i do have a lot not posted online anywhere.
Its like HunHunter says, i see these things day in day out and you get used to them so never give it a second thought, its a bit like walking down the street and seeing cars, only of late with this game i have seen people get excited when they know one is about and i have taken quite a few people round and got them a sit in it, etc, but i cant abuse it really.

If anyone wants to upload these images to a modelling site then feel free, have added a couple more images below, you can see the Universal joint and shaft just below the twisted copper pipe at the rear of the cylinder bank, that was the drive to the pressurisation compressor.

The Door open on the side behind the cockpit is for battery access

The prop is a dead giveaway for the Grif as well, turning the "other" way.

Wow! Pics are awesome! Can't wait till we get a Spit. Got some links on the Griffon engine, Interestingly enough, I went to the Rolls site, and they have a Mk XIX Griffon Spitfire that looks suspiciously similar. Are the pics from that same plane? Sure looks like it. The video is cool, although on dial up the video doesn't work too well. The sound is cool, though, especially the lope of the cam. Haven't heard that much lope since a buddy of mine had a 1970 W-30 Olds with a 455...pocketa pocketa pocketa...what a sound!

Anyway, here's the links on the engine:

Here's the link to the Rolls site:

Check out the specs on the engine. Over 4700 ft/lb of torque, approximately 2238 cubic inches, and 2350 hp at 2750 RPM. Flying hot rod! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Enjoy,

Olds
