View Full Version : Burma scenery is GREAT news!

This is brilliant news - Burma scenery is LONG overdue in a flight sim I reckon. Considering it was the ONLY air campaign against the Japanese to run continously from December 1941 to August 1945, I can't believe its never been included before.
The great news is that you can fly virtually all the allied aircraft that were in this long lasting camapign:

RAF 1941-45: Buffalo, Hurricane 1/11b/11c, Mohawk (Hawk 75), Spitfire Vb/c, Spitfire V111, P-47D, Beaufighter, Mosquito. Plus Blenheim, Liberator and Catalina AI.
AVG 1941-42: Hawk/P-40
USAAF mid 1943-45: P-40E-M, P-51A/B/D, P-47D, P-38J/L, P-51A/B/D (I'm not sure on the P-39). Plus AI B-24's etc. Its the only place where the early P-51's were used!

If you're looking RAF SEAC skins for those planes, then look no further than
www.flying-legends.net (http://www.flying-legends.net)
there are plenty to chose from here, the RAF markings in the game are only correct for the early period, later RAF roundels were smaller and just 2 shades of blue. The red and white was dropped because of the Japanese markings.
Unfortunately the IJA aircraft are a bit thin on the ground, especially as there are currently no Army bombers, the Ki-21-11a is sorely needed. But we have Ki-43's aplenty, plus Ki-46 recon planes. In late 1944 Ki-84's appeared in Burma. Navy planes only appeared once; on a raid against Calcutta in 1943, and were G4M's escorted by A6M3 Zero's.
There is a skin in the G4M section, dappled green over light grey, with a Sentai marking on the tail, at FL, that makes the Betty look like a Sally! The best IJAAF units flew in Burma. The aircraft missing are Ki-27, Ki-45, Ki-44 fighters, and Ki-30, Ki-51, Ki-48 and Ki-21 bombers.
The Burma campaign included more ground attack missions than anywhere else too, simply because there was a good road and rail network and production centres.

Early 51's were also used by the Tuskegee Airmen in Italy and Europe.

The Ki.27 is a dead certain addition, Ki.21 a probable. Only time will tell if there will be others.

i believe the p-400 saw limited action. I recall sometime ago reading that in a 1970's timelife ww2 set that I had a chance to breeze through.

burma finally makes a decent historical IJA fighter campaign possible.

Honestly, many of the maps have been disappointing but it's difficult to complain when we have gotten so much for free.

I remember the burma map started out as a question to ianboys (who wasn't interested at that point) and someone got rude about it. A few days later I think, Ianboys decides to do it and here we are! We should all thank him for taking up the challenge despite how it all started http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif P-40E was in service with the US Army in the CBI starting in July, 1942. They inherited all AVG aircraft, including their P-40Es, when the AVG contract was dissolved July 4th 1942

So we don't need to wait until '43 for those E models http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

sadly, we don't have an A model P-51

I'm wondering if this extra scenery will be on the DVD or as a future download - any of you old hands know the answer? Sounds brilliant news on a Ki-27 and possible Ki-21, really looking forward to getting stuck into the MB with those - endless possibilities, including Ki-27's v. Soviet Rata's methinks (not over Burma though!!).
Thanks for the feedback on US fighters too - my knowledge is more based around IJA and RAF

I really am looking forward to this map, and my flyable Ki 27.

Too bad there is no flyable Hawk 75/P36/Mohawk though.

lets cross fingers for the flyable Ki-43-II (cockpit was send to moskau from the guys who made the Macchi pits !!) and an AI Ki-21 - to bring some IJAAF live on that map http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

and a Ki-51 assault plane can be faked by the D3A in the green skin.

At a push a Val in a green, or silver skin with green blotches, can also be a Ki-30 anne! Its a little bit of a pity the Ki-46 was the solid nose model or we could have disguised that as a Ki-45. Still the Ki-46-111 recon plane is very good to have.
Certainly the Ki-27 and Ki-21 is brilliant news if they both come off, and a flyable Ki-43-11 would be neat. There is plenty there to make the Burma scenery worthwhile.
I must admit when I purchased PF recently, I was very happy to see that the Spitfires and a Beaufighter were included, and then a Mossie in a free update, but then when I looked at the maps with the game, I was amazed that there was nowhere to fly them!! So this will make that possible historically. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
