I can tell you that yes the damage modelling is improved in regards to the planes are more fragile where relevant ( excluding behemoths like the Jug )
It registers exactly where you were hit and correspondingly models damage to the parts in that area ( it always did previous to the patch )including the internal components.
Are you referring to will it show exact graphical damage of where you were hit?
So that if a single bullet hits your left elevator, it will show the exact damage representation of that hit?
In that case no, it doesn't show it but it does model the damage from it. ( it will layer a damage texture when that specific area has taken enough damage to justify the texture )

However, planes that have been damaged are now much harder to control, i.e take a 20mm hit in the wing and you will find you pull to the side that was hit and you can't make turns that are as hard.
It is like in the old IL2 days.
A big improvement imho.
