Heyhoo all of you gentlemen...
Why will there be real birds modeled in flightsims? We all speak about that great La-7 and that wonderful FW-190D-9 but hey:
we all fly thanks to the existence of the sparrow, seagull and name 'm
.
I'd think it'd be a great thing to incorporate some birds and flocks of them...
How about you??

Real birds, no.

Simulated birds. Yes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have mentioned this a few times in the past. It has always seemed strange to me that nearly every flight sim i`ve flown have never had simulated birds flying in the distance every now and then.

BIRDS should always be paid a little respect in flight sims because without them we would not have even thought to fly!

It`s also interesting to note that Silent hunter4 has birds, but weirdly has not one single fish in its oceons...

Strange lack of respect for the very creatures of our world that make these things possible...

Flocks of birds on a take off run ought to be interesting! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

In real life you do have to watch out for them. I've had close calls with falcons, hawks of every description and thousands of Turkey Vultures when flying GA aircraft. A Vulture is big enough to severely damage a small plane.

EAW had seagulls flying around.

Not birds, but Janes WWII Fighters had random deer that would appear on the ground. Sometimes they would cross the runway as you were taking off durning the start of a mission, you could shoot them too!

I have often thought of how birds would add to the immersion of a flight sim...in addition to the ways people have mentioned (watching out for birds colliding with your wind screen or prop) it would be cool if flocks of birds would take to flight when bombs explode...or when you strafe a landing strip.

Another cool addition would be livestock (horses/cows) and/or dogs...many horses found useful employment in the military (German and Russian army). It would be cool to watch sheep scatter as you buzz a field... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Ya, that feature was pretty cool.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

BoB had static cows and sheep in fields... They made for nice target practice. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I remember the deer in WWII Fighters. My friends and I would screw around forever just trying to shoot just one! (When we weren't trying to see who could crash the best http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif)

I would like to combine the ww2 deer killing ability with one of Microsoft's "civilation" games feature in that every time you kill a deer some farmer comes out and cleans and dreeses the carcass for you. This adds points to your total squadron food supply! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I've been told that EAW had flocks of birds that would randomly appear.

If you look at the file archives for Jane's WWII Fighters, it has textures and sound effects for barnyard life. I never saw these animals in the game so I guess the feature was never activated by the programmers.

Fighter Squadron: Screamin Demons had barnyard animals on at least one of the maps.

I played EAW offline continuously for about 3 years. never saw one bird, let alone a flock of them. If it was there, I would`ve seen it, since it bothered me even then.

I really like the P39 skin in your sig. Is it available somewhere for download?

you can get birds in FSX, and ez scenery provides them as an add-on for FS9., and yes if you fly into them youll trash your aircraft.

Hey Dr Jones senior brought down a Me-109 in Indian Jones Search for the Holy Grail.

They could be a secret uber weapon.

EAW did not, I repeat, did not have any birds in it. Nor did any of the later improvements.

In WW2 fighters, if you played around with some cfg files one could increase the number of trees, buildings and yes...deer runing around.

one could increase the number of deer to so many that you could see 2 or 3 at any given moment, even runing around in the middle of a tank battle

What other feature would you be willing to give up for birds?

Empires's short lived Flying Corps WW1 sim (which i rather liked before I got Windows XP) had rather large birds that would take flight when you flew low over the trees. It was a good feature. Unfortunatley the planes on the ground seemed to float about a foot off the ground when static though.

Janes Navy fighters series of sims a decade ago had a static moose (male and female) that you could use in the FMB. You could destroy them to, and target them with Mavarick missles.

They also had a giant Mothra type critter and a pterodactyl in it, as well as a neat UFO.

Wouldn't they be sim-birds?

I played the EAW sim for nearly four years and there were definitely flocks of birds. They would usually be seen in the distance during a takeoff run. I never could get close to them, but others did and took screen shots. The birds appeared with the last official patch and you had to put a special line in the configuration file. The birds in EAW were geese.

I would happily give up any hyper-realistic-but-ever-so-dull feature for some more immersion in the game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. Example: I like realism, but for me it's not necessary to have a CEM that is so realistic that I'd have to warm-up the engine first before I could take off, or go through all the proper procedures for ignition.

Having some live animals (and humans btw) is a good idea and adds to immersion. I love the idea of a flock of sheep dispersing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif I think the algorithm to do so would be rather simple.

Rowans "Flying Corp Gold" had birds. When you were taking off and landing a lot of the fields had rows of trees at the edges. If you got too close you could see bird flying out of them.

The arcade WW1 Wings of War which had quite nice graphics and was fun online in my early flight sim days had birds too AND WAIT FOR IT.........Apparently there was a mod/hidden feature that you could activate to get them to defaecate on your windscreen.........
