View Full Version : IL2 - where are all the mods?

As an ex-console gamer, the thing I most enjoy about PC games are the mods. Modders are talented people, but there seems to be none for on Il-2.

Why not? Is it very hard to mod Il2? Or is it discouraged/illegal? (probably - or someone would have done a 20mm LW cannon mod by now... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

Or is no-one willing to touch the sacred gospel according to Oleg? (someone who, after all, gave us the novelty Go-225, B1-1 and I-185 at the expense of the Mosquito, Lancaster and Typhoon....)

Korean war mod: We already have half the planes... just add Migs and stir vigorously (fancy a Twin-Mustang or Panther, anyone http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif )

Pylon racing mod: We've already got the skins for it... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Spanish Civil War/Sino-Japanese war mods for a bit of slow TnB fun...?

Is there nothing that can be done?
(PS: Admittedly, this whinging is from someone who thought BASIC was a knock-off version of LEGO until recently, and Java was a kind of coffee...)

I have been quoted! I feel honored.

You have mods. Just not in the form you know of. Example.

P-38
P-63
P-80
Go-229
Spitfire Vb and IX

All models that I made for AEP expantion pack. AEP is a huge collection of aircraft made by 3rd party modelers. Almost 90% of them.

Also, Dget was a 3rd party program included into FB. A dynamic compaign generator "mod". Some of the maps we have today, and most that will be released soon are 3rd party.

Scripted DF servers are a mod. Score recording is a mod. IL2 skins are mods.

Sure they are not the kind your thinking of from like Half-Life and other games, but they are still 3rd party mods.

The problem is that IL2 is not open. Oleg has stated many times that the source will NEVER be released. Its just to much. Also, Olegs standard of quality is very high, so only a VERY FEW select members of the comunity have what it takes to contribute. We work very close with Oleg and his development team. Also, unlike many "mods", we have been paid for some of our work like in AEP and PF. Even PF was heavly loaded with 3rd party aircraft! F4U, Ki-43, Ki-46, Ki-64, B-29, Emely, Seafire and many others are 3rd part.

So yes, we do have "mods".

Gib

Take a look at Sim HQ and similar pages for the updates that some very talented individuals are working on. Look at the time and effort those individuals have invested in getting 1 (ONE!) model ready for 1C to accept. 6000-7000 polys for the external model, 3000 or so for the cockpit, skins and texturing, LODs (level of detail models, usually 6 i think, all showing the model at different distances), two or more damage levels and EXACTING historical reference collections.

There are no mods because only 1C has the code for IL2 and at the moment they aren't going to part with it for love or money. So no code, nothing to play around with and no mods!

Oleg includes various whims and flights of fancy because he wants to. Its his sim, let him do with it what he wants. All these rants demanding we include this or that (torpeedo bombers, il-10, late war spits, more 109 models, more J-birds ect ) or change this or that dont amount to more than shouting in a locked room if Oleg doesn7t see the necessity.

Those 'fantasy birds' such as the go-229 (or ho-229 if your picky), Yp-80 and 109z were modeled by some talented third party individuals (thanks Gibbage and Capt Haddock to name a few!). They were done to the standards demanded by 1c and Oleg decided that he could put them in the game. The only work for Maddox Games was to fit them in the game and code appropriate (or inapproprite) flight models for them. No mess no fuss and new planes for all. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The BI-1 and two different I-185 models were included because Oleg used to work as a flight engineer in the Russian aerospace industry. The man is acknowledging his roots and giving us planes that most of us had never hear of. They also provide some incredible 'what if' scnarios. I do occasionally use the 185s for late war scenarios and a '46 Allies v Soviet campaign i'm trying to write a script for at the moment. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Korea needs A LOT more than just a few new planes. Several early Jets from both side, USN post war planes, new ships, helicopters, ect. Early radar and IR missles, new weapons and primitive avionics make cockpiot, weapon and flight modelling a new and completely different situation to what we have in IL2.

Il2 air racing is alive and well, there are several servers dedicated to this. If you really want to learn how to get the most out of you bird down low try it out.

Again, if you knew the work load, historical research and deatail that 1c demands these are HUGE projects. remember that the Falkland Islands mod for Operation Flashpoint has taken more than 16 months so far, with 6 seperate modelers and a few scrpit kiddies in the mix and it still isn't finished.

Still, we can but dream....

On a serious note I for one and great many of my friends are glad the Oleg and IC Maddox won't open the code to Mods. Watch the forum the next (and 4768th)time someone starts a thread titled Cheaters on Hyperlobby!!!Those won't just be people mistaking serious Lagg issues or seeing fools that like to hit print screen frequently

You give folks access to open code and pretty shortly your either running punkbuster and the Server admins are constantly running balls out to stay one step ahead of the cheat hackers or you tell yourself "hey I should get me one of those 800mph P-51's with the 8 Hispano's so I can be competitive"

Personally I think keeping the code to themselves is a good thing. If I want the kind of nonsense that goes hand in hand with open codes I'll play COD but for a good coop I like knowing that if I got "Pwned" it was from skill and or luck in any combo not because some twit came up with a new hack that morning and PunkBuster ain't been updated yet to counter little Freddies "Invisi-infinito uber snoober" mod. just my 2 rupies

I'd like to mention I wasn't sniping at the 'modders' (now I know they do exist, only 1C has 'high standards' i.e. uses their hard work and sells it for $$$) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

....and I AM glad we don't have IL-2 Disc Riccochet and IL-2 Aerial Team Paintball http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I suppose I was just indirectly sulking about the Typhoon....

Most of the mods for the IL-2 series are limited to Skins (there are some excellent ones) and utilities such as:

1. IL-2 Shturmovik Stab http://www.users.on.net/~mjtm/IL-2/ (mine)

2. Paul Lowengrin's Dynamic Campaign Generator http://www.lowengrin.com/

3. IL-2 Manager http://www.checksix-fr.com/

4. IL-2 MAT Manager http://www.acesartwork.co.uk/

All the above enhance the game beyond what is shipped.

Matt
