I would like to know what the activation distance is for the different torpedos. There is nothing in the book about this. I have been trying at different distances to learn what it is and it appears to be 500m. I would like to know more please
regards, Mark

Personally, I always allow at least 300 metres, remember to factor in your speed and especially if it's a Destroyer bearing straight down on you at full pelt, then you'll need more distance between the both of you. The torp will need to run for a minimum of 300 metres to arm - any less than that and it will bounce of the hull.

magregory63,

It shouldn't really matter which type of torpedo you fire...the distance needed for it to arm itself so that it explodes properly is roughly 400 meters. Any closer than that and you'll most likely watch your torpedos bounce off the hull.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif You can get away with 300 meters; and not a hair less.

I have had success in to about 280m, but i try to never be closer than 350m or so, better safe than sorry!

The torpedo needs to run 300 meters.

If the ship is off to your left and the torpedo needs to turn to get to it, it will cover 300 meters even if the ship is closer.

If the ship is moving away from you it can cover 300 meters even though the ship is closer when you fire.

If the ship is moving towards you the torpedo might not cover 300 meters even if the target is far away from you. A DD doing 30 kts directly for you from directly ahead of you needs to be 630 meters away from you for the torpedo to travel 300 meters at the slow speed setting.

The extra 30 meters above makes up for the fact that the torpedo launches from 30 meters infront of the periscope. (Type VII)

Lecek is correct.

All torps, except homing torps, must travel 300m before arming.

Arming distance for pink tip homing torps is 400m.

300 meters as stated but always allow a small margin for error, personally I give it an extra 25 to 50 meters. You can fire at a target at less than 300 meters provided boat and target are moving away from each other - but the torpedo needs 300 meters to arm.

Of course there are things that can cause torpedoes to "bounce" off taget's hulls. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
