Except for the poor visibillity, I like the plane also. If it had better visibillity, I would have flown it more.

Sexy in kind of a BDSM sort of way, isn't she? She'll give you a hell of a ride but you better not get careless with her or start taking her for granted or she'll kill you just to remind you who's who.

There is indeed a certain fetishy quality to the Snake and I confess to being one of her slaveboys. At least occasionally.

But I would not say the sexiest fighter ever. Just in FB at the present time. Take a long look at the P-38. The way those twin booms are laid out, the shapes of those two spinners. (Howard Hughes, you might remember, was involved in the design, and this is the guy who designed Jane Russell's bra.) Why, it's practically indecent.

XyZspineZyX
06-16-2003, 10:06 AM
Maybe so, but except for (from what I‚¬īve read) US pilots in the Pacific hated "the Hog", and was more than willing to exchange the P-39 for P-38‚¬īs or Hellcats.
In tests against enemy planes, it was outclassed in most aspects.
The story might be a different one for the King Cobra P-63.

XyZspineZyX
06-16-2003, 10:27 AM
They only hated it in the Pacific, in the thin Russian air "The Hog" became "The OMGTHATGUNISHUGEANDEATSFIGHTERS" course, thats just a rough translation of the Russian nickname.

Were it not maligned and disrespected, It would not be the P39.
Lao tzu flew the P39.
Men who fly the P39 have been shown to have higher sperm counts and are far an away the best dressers.
women who fly the p39 are ALLWAYS devistatingly beautiful, charming and, of course, strikingly well dressed.
The P39 is not just a plane - it is a lifestyle.

It was a good-looking airplane. If looks counted for anything, it would have been a great airplane. And the Russians absolutely loved them, and wound up with most of them. Under 15,000 feet, the P-39, called the Airacobra, was a decent if underpowered performer.

But the Airacobra was mincemeat above 15,000 feet, and useless in Western Europe, where virtually all of the flying and fighting was at double that altitude. ...

But in October of 1942, I was thrilled to be flying it. It was unique, with its engine behind the cockpit, and the propeller drive shaft running between the pilot's legs. It had a tricycle landing gear, unlike anything in our arsenal except the P-38. And the cockpit was more like a car's, with a door instead of a swing-up or sliding canopy, and windows that actually rolled up and down with a crank. You could taxi the thing while resting your elbows on the sill, like cruising the boulevard on a Saturday night.
