View Full Version : VOTE - Most popular user-made campaigns

neural_dream
12-31-2005, 09:35 PM
Each one will rank his/her favorite 3 user-made campaigns. With a point system similar to Eurovision's http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif, 3 pts go to the first choice, 2 to the second and 1 to the third.

Once every day I will post the scores. The "competition" will end in 7 days and of course no doublevoting http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif.

I guess that by the end of the week all these gems will have been advertised and downloaded by many more, plus one of the campaign builders will be proud to know he/she has made the most popular user-made campaign.

Don't hesitate to vote for one you made or one which isn't in the list (I'll add it).

I go first:

1. El Alamein 3 pts
I had just read "Desert Eagles" and was looking for something relevant. El Alamein was perfect for that.

2. Cactus Diary 2 pts
It was well-publicised and I decided to try it although I was playing online only at the time.

3. Weisse Schwalbe 1 pt
Great and original piece of work. The reputation of the two makers attracted me to it.

Wow, I'd have to play a lot more campaigns to do this objectively

My top one would be

Battle over Britain

and a two way tie between
Two Little DUCs and Spanish Civil War

Good grief, what a task. So many there that I've never finished, and even more never started!

Anyway, here's a 1-2-3:

1.Cactus Diary
2.Falco
3.North and South

Cheers!

I haven't played that many user-made campaigns, so I will vote for only two. Understand I would not give these my vote if I didn't think they were well done:

1st - Battle over Britain
2nd - Beaufighters in the Desert

I haven't played all that many, but of those I have played:

1. Battle Over Britain

2. VMF 214

3. El Alamein

I don't look at this as a competition, but as a way to say I really liked these campaigns.

First Place: Castaways by Dubbo (for uniqueness and immersion (and Dubbo is my friend and I beta-tested this campaign for him))

Second Place: Cactus Diary by Bird Brain (for extra special immersion)

No third place as I can't decide from the following list which one deserves it and which ones don't:

Against Overwhelming Odds
Blue
Guadalcanal F4F-3
Hurricats
Straight and True
Straight Down
Straight Shot
Thesus

Wow... This is highly subjective as I have flown just a small subset of the whole catalog:

1 - Lighting Strikes
2 - Theseus
3 - Tied: Against Overwhelming Odds and The Blue

Mention to: Hurricats and The Hell Hawks

I need another life just to be able to fly all of them!!

I'm slightly embarrassed that my only, flawed work has gotten any points at all. Thanks for the kind words, v2.0 of WTCF is in the works and perhaps a third done, but I wish to allow Obelix to get his AVG update out and recognised before I even think of releasing it. I hope he's done soon, i want to fly an AVG campaign in which I don't know what's going to happen next!

Cool idea and that is a great list. Many thanks to HotSpace for compiling all the links! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I am a little surprised, http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif quite flattered, http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif but very pleased http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif to see a few of mine on people's lists with so many to choose from, especially "El Alamein" that I never got any comments on one way or another! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I would just list 3 of my own if it were true, but to be honest I would say;

1) "Cactus Diary" 3 points
2) "When Tigers Could Fly" 2 points
3) "Weibe Schwalbe & The Galland Circus" 1 point

Here's looking forward to seeing the results. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Those who don't have SCW really owe it themselves to get it. It is a nicely complete package, I daresay almost as thorough as BoB

I would like to install the Flying Tigers Campaign but I dont know exactly where to put it.

The Flying Tigers file is unzipped as file name Sk.

When I try to put it in this directory - C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\Missions\Campaign

Windows XP says that there is another file Sk in this directory and that I will overwrite that file. I dont want to overwrite any files so I tried renaming the file to FT and install it that way but I dont know how to access the campaign in game. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Wedge, http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif that's not relevant to the topic of the thread, but you'd better ask the creator of Flying Tigers or read the campaign's readme. The readmes usually say all you need to know http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

3pts: Gaston's SCW campaign mainly for sheer, **** plane dogfighting fun AND the unusual subject matter. All the skins were great, too.
2pts:
Enforcer's VVS Campaign Pt 1.Enforcer's campaign was a great fun time and had a heap of detail on the ground. I didn't watch all the battles closely but the feeling of a larger conflict going on was evident, I thought. Mostly though, i just had fun flying the rata and then the rocket-armed Lagg.
1pt:WTCF by Chuck older. Again, interesting and less familiar subject material, cool map which added to the exocticism of the campaign. i never finished it (I will soon, i just have 30 or so other campaigns to have a look at first) but it really caught my attention plus it had a SHARK MOUTH ad a plane whose canopy is retractable - can't go far wrong with these two things I reckon.

Lots of other Honourable Mentions:
""Cactus Diaries
BoB""
Castaways""(which I am really looking forward to finishing as it was so different from any other one I've seen before)
""Jagdflieger 1 and 2 for lots of combat and for making me learn the 190". It also had gorgeous desert skins.
And the list goes on.

The first time I saw this thread it bothered me a little. It took me a day to figure out what exactly my problem with it is.

I have made several campaigns and I never made them to compete with anyone. I intentionally chose planes (IL-2T, A6M2-N "Rufe" and the SBD-3) that were not "popular", but would be fun to fly if the missions were carefully crafted. I have flown a number of other people's campaigns and thought the same thing about some of them. Since this game supports such a wide variety of aircraft (biplanes, early war fighters, later war fighters, jets, level bombers, dive-bombers, fighter-bombers, seaplanes, etc.)

I think most people choose a campaign based on the plane, the theater or the country, rather than how good it is. That's understandable, its what I do when I download a campaign. As many people here have said, "I have only flown a few campaigns". I think a lot of people simply miss too many good campaigns because it isn't the "right" plane or country or whatever.

Therefore, I think that this competetion should be called most popular, rather than best user-made campaign. A popular campaign has to be good or it wouldn't be popular, but it may not be the "best" campaign out there.

That's why the quotes in "competition". I used the word best in the title before I had decided what exactly it would be about and then forgot it. Thx for noticing. Yes, it was annoying.

This is tuff, since as mentioned, most of us only have so much experience. THere sure are alot of great cmpns out there, but like many cmpn blders, I spend so much time on my own projects......

1. Castaways by HH Dubbo http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif....without doubt the best, most inovative, adrenalin rushing, surprising, fun, hilarious, and at times downright scary cmpn ive ever flown since i started doing flight sims in 95, despite my being a historical based guy. 3-pts.

2. When Tigers could fly......original, realistic, exciting, feeling of optomistic desperation against great odds. (this despite chuckie being an evil evil man who addicts us and then gives us no more "product"). 2-pts.

3. Cactus Dairys by Bird Brain. If youve read "Cactus Air Force" by RG Miller, you will be in the book. If not, you will still be immersed in the most fascinating WW2 battle (to me). BB...dont get cocky....put your towel back on your head and get back to work. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif1-pt.

These were so close, and there are so many more as mentioned above...thanks guys. The recent Corsairios cmpn is in the top running, but i haveint finished it yet. So there.

And i appreciate FSM's mention of my VVS fighters cmpn...still working on pt2. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is tough cause up until a week ago, I only could play them in single player. Now that my rig can hande it better, I'm playing El Alamein, Enforcers VVS Fighters and Ta-152 Berlin April 6,1945. I don't know offhand if the last one is user made, but it's good.
So based on the single missions I've played I'd vote as follows:
3pts-El Alamein
2pts-Battle Over Britain
1pt-When Tigers Could Fly

So many camps, not enough time....

My experience is extremely limited, but here it goes anyway:

3 pts. Battle of Britain (for its impeccable attention to history and all the extra stuff)
2 pts. Fleet Air Arm (for its nice and varied missions)
1 pt. Castaway (for its innovative plot and resourceful navigator)

But really, I feel like I€m a bit unfair here. There are so many campaigns I haven€t played. This thread, with the comprehensive list should be a sticky!

Don't count these as I've already voted but it was hard leaving out 'Corsarios Catrachos', 'Two Little DUCs', 'Spanish Civil War' and 'The Blue'.

Perhaps it should have been a Top Ten list! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

A query
The only usermade dgen you have placed on the the list is the BOE addon westfront. There is Amagis Disaster over the frontiers as well. Is this one meant to be in this comp as well or do you consider User made dgen to be different?

neural_dream

that would count. i just included it, but the list is only to remind as many as possible. The gamers know which ones they liked before they actually read it (I suppose).

Dunkelgrun and Enforcer,

Thanks for your kind comments on my "Corsarios Catrachos" campaing. It is a recently released one, so I'm not sure how many people have been able to fly it, though. Your comments might encourage others to download it and try it.

This thread has encouraged me to try Castaways as my next one. I downloaded a while ago, but I haven't had time for it yet.

I think a few of the regulars may still be on holiday or something, since ive noticed alot of cmpn fliers that havent been on here in a while. Dont be surprised if this thing gets resurected in the near future, when some of them come back....maybe.

and i also just wanted to give honorable mention a cmpn i havent seen mentioned but was really well made and very imaginative....is pretty old, but it was "Shooting Stars", about flying P-80s in a continued war in 46. I apologize to the author for forgetting who made it, but It was pretty cool.

I listed Hurricats as an honorable mention when I voted. However, I didn't vote for third place as I couldn't decide between Hurricats and 5 or 6 other campaigns. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I didn't vote for 'Against Overwhelming Odds' because although it was a real labour of love and I was extremely pleased with the result it has been sabotaged by the changes in the FM. As for Hurricats I just mentioned it so the thread would get a bump. There are better campaigns around, but it is quite different (and hard) so if anyone out there hasn't got it yet then go to it!!

What with doing a bit for Ian's Burma map, testing Corsarios Catrachos and Xmas I haven't had much time lately, but I've taken up a previously started campaign again. Just spent all evening getting squadron dispositions and strengths - maybe that's why it takes me so long to make one of these things http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

I am afraid I havent played many user made offline campaigns.

The one that sticks in my mind however is the one where you fly a P47, near the end you do a couple of missions in a p40. (when they take your p47s back for further testing)

Also you have to 'beat' a Mustang groups score of Kills in one sortie.

If anyone can remember the name of this one then I vote for this as my fav. I loved this one.

Chuckie is right.....the best cmpn will get little flying if not promoted by the either the author or somebody. Some advertising like Chuck is talking about, wiht some dramatic stuff and screenies, really peeks interest. And you should do it in the general discussion, as the misn blder forum is very limited in its use around here. Always advertise, and a little teaser before its completed really gets some attention....Bird Brain is especially good at such.

And speaking of Chuck, he's hard at work on some cool stuff that you guys are gonna freak over when he's done......some interesting work, and alot of it. As I told him, if the cmpn blders were paid, nobody could afford it.

I think the biggest improvement toward such would be better AI that could be better manipulated and more reliable, but the AI here is still better than most.

Inspired of this thread I just started the Battle over Britain campaign. It looks good and I know that a part of Il2 I've neglected will bring lots of fun.

But one question though:

in the first missions I get some training. In the second one I shall excort a DC-3 towing a glider, and then shoot down the glider afterwards. I get a enemy kill message when it gets down (a bit stupid thing as it sits a pilot in the glider...). In the debriefing afterwards a friendliy pilot is missing, shot down. I tried it twice, only the glider is shot down. Is this a little mistake, should I leave the glider in one piece?

btw: it was referred as a tragic friendly accident.

"The Real Deal". Excellent campaign that I actually just finished this weekend. I'm not even a very big fan of the Jug, and I still enjoyed this immensely. Well thought-out missions, and some inventive stuff (even a lil FW190 playtime!). Loved the aged film-reel tracks between missions. Really immersive.

Hats off, Extreme One.

ps: one question. That last mission, where you & your flight are taking off while being vulched by 3 schwarms of 262s...what's the objective there? I managed to bag one of the bandits and I believe one of my wingmates got one, also, but for the most part, they chewed us to peices. After a while, I got a "Primary Target: Failed" message. I survived & landed safely, but couldn't really figure out what I was supposed to do. Get to the recon point in a certain time?

Toss up for 3pts between straight & true and when tigers could fly. PPPLLLEEEASE don't make me pick a favorite! After looking at the list, I haven't even scratched the surface of the offline campaigns http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif. I just now started flying again cause I moved & couldn't find all the %$$@*! computer cables.
1)straight & true - cause I like low level attacks & torpedo runs because there isn't much stock in game, good running commentary in mission briefing & variety in missions & extra brief material
2)when tigers could fly - always liked the AVG & nothing in game on them, historically accurate as possible given sim restraints in terms of maps & plane sets available

For both (only ones I've dl'd so far) it is obvious that a lot of time was spent creating & fine tuning so everything works. Hats off & thanks for the hard work. Now I gotta dl some more missions.

So far I have played only a few campaigns so far (two little ducs and one from vpmedia) but I will give my vote to CastAway only. I am planning to play a lot of them since they are just resting on my HD for quite some time now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

So
Cast Away 3 pts.
That campaign although short, is really done so well that it really deserves to be very high placed.

If I may add one suggestion to the campaign builders -- please, include only quality skins in your campaigns (there are tons of them available I hope that with proper credit given authors will allow that since all thing is free and skins are too); for me biggest draw back are some poorly done skins. I remember one promising campaign that I didn't played only because of that (sorry that I must say that but it contained really ugly skins of which I think I would do better ones with my limited PShop knowledge).

"Best" is SO subjective. Unless one could play all the campaigns it is really impossible to say what's "best". Even if you could play them all taste dictates what is "best" for you.
I haven't had a lot of time to fly a lot of campaigns but of those I have, here are my favorites. All of them show, IMO, fine craftsmanship and attention to detail. The fictional ones are immersive enough to have been actual missions. With all that said here are my choices:

1. Castaways - Absolutely innovative, original, and fun. Excellent and entertaining briefings. Any campaign that starts out with you flying totally blind and about ready to run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere and ends with you fighting for your life against overwhelming odds rates as an all time favorite in my book. Some of the best dressed sets in all of user made missions are here. Many original ideas were used to make this a completely immersive campign.

2. When Tigers Could Fly - My love of the American Volunteer Group and Chucks ability to realize this part of the war within the tight constraints of IL-2 is amazing. Chuck, you do yourself a diservice calling it flawed. Given what you had to work with you did a masterful job of making familiar maps feel brand new. When I fly it, I feel like I am there. I have the sense of isolation and apprehension from being in a completely foreign land fighting an enemy that is technically superior. Without a doubt one of the best crafted campaigns available.

3. Straight and True - This campaign taught me more about navigation and AI management than a ton of tutorials. The awesome difficulty of finding something as small as a ship in the vastness of the ocean is nearly overwhelming. Excellent briefings and all the extras make this campaign do-able. So far the only campiagn I've had to take notes during the briefing just to finish most of the missions. Well thought out and highly immersive.

4. Straight Shot - Another original idea. Launching from the deck of a battleship is singularly one of the most exciting experiences I've had. Flying an awkward float plane and surviving is quite the challange. Even with the "slick" water of 4.02 this campaign is a "must fly". Detailed briefings that must be remembered to sucessfully complete missions is a bonus to the immersion factor.

5. Fleet Air Arm - Many varied missions here and adds the excitement that even if successful, you still need to ditch. One of the first user made campaigns I flew and still a favorite.

There are several campiagns listed here that I would like to try but the time constraints imposed by Real Life just don't allow it.

(Now when Ed MacMahon knocks on my door with that $10Million Dollar check I'll have all the time I need.) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

1). VVS Fighters: i reminds me of my first few weeks playing il2, the eastern front seems to me where Forgotten Battles feels best. also like the challenge of being frequently outclassed. and i love the i16

Also brilliant briefings, immersive and varied missions, where you really feel like your part of a massive war. staggering ground battles, something ive not seen on such a scale before

2). When Tigers could fly: made with a true craftsmans eye, excellent balance between missions, short range intercepts on single planes, and massive bomber formation attacks.

also detailed and well thought out ground objects, as said previously said pretty impressive how chuck has managed to get that feeling of immersion using german and russian planes as substitutes. intelligent design throughout.

3) Weibe Schawble: Check sig! This was another fav of mine, difficult to seperate the 3 really and lots of others. but i love the me262, and this campaign really conveys the sense of desperation and futility at the end of the war. also love the challenge of those forest landings. and the feeling of absolute plane superiority!

oh aye and u get to fight tempests.

Very good idea Neural- I havent had the time to indulge in many campaigns so i cant give an informed opinion. I really appreciate the information gained from this thread though and i'm currently following a couple of links to download some of the popular campaigns.

I survived & landed safely, but couldn't really figure out what I was supposed to do. Get to the recon point in a certain time?

Very good question and one I'm surprised I haven't been asked before.

Basically I was at a loss as to how to end the campaign.

It was only the 2nd campaign I'd created so being very inexperienced I made two big mistakes.

Mistake one - I thought I'd end with an impossible mission, one that couldn't be completed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif(what a very wierd solution looking back)

Mistake two - I thought that the mission I'd created was impossible to complete.
It wasn't. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

So; one bad mission and 49 good ones isn't a bad ratio! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I havn't completed many but here's what I like...

1. Cactus Diary, follows closely historical missions from late summer '42. Great fun.

2. BoB. Hurricane campaign with lots of variety and a bad weather mission I had to tweak http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

3. VMF 214, 1943 in the Pacific with Marine F4U squadron.

All you folks who make these for us to enjoy deserve a big thanks from us who get to reap the bennys.
There are a bunch of others I've started but not far into yet, like WTCF (excellent) and Straight Shot was very cool and very short (Short Shot?)

Thanks all you mission makers!!

Cadet_Bobo,

I am working on a sequel to Straight Shot. It is set in the Aleutians.

Based on feedback I got from a forum thread, I am making this campaign different in the following ways:
1) The primary goal is always to reach the target or start of the search area.
2) The landing recon zone is bigger than in Straight Shot.
3) The weather is more varied. A lot of snow in this campaign.

I keep saying that user comments help make campaigns better. Let us know what you like or don't like about our campaigns.

Very difficult question!

I fly user made campaigns for a variety of reasons; and a campaign can be quite flawed; yet perfectly answer my needes at the time; and therefore be impressive, and score top marks with me regardless of the faults it may or may not contain.

I fly online regularly; albeit mainly dogfight servers; and I'm generaly looking for something in a campaign I can't get out of DF server. That could be an unusual plane type; or an unusual setting.

Anyway; it's almost impossible to limit myself to just three campaigns; and even harder to give them any precedence; but here goes:

1) "Battle over Britain". Any one who buys a WWII prop sim and doesn't grab every chance to fly in the BOB (from either side) has no soul. But it's not just the subject; it's the quality of production of this campaign; from start to finish which makes it my first choice. From the very first mission one is lead into the early RAF. Anything by Extreme one and Polymando is going to be good!

2) "Against overwhelming odds". Again; I was very impressed with the way the designer attempts to introduce and train one for the subject; very atmospheric and a very immersive ending. An overwhelmingly impressive first effort from Dunkelgrun

3)"Polish Campaign" by "Billyprice". It's rare a campaign that can so faithfully capture the utter hopelessness of war. You could be the greatest thing ever to grace a cockpit; yet you know your side has no chance. A saddeningly enlightening experience, as Bearcat says: "Immersion Baby!".

Well; those are my top three; for what it's worth; but I'll have to mention the following; if only to give 'em a plug:

"Swiss campaign" (109's over Jura) by Obelix. Stunningly beautifull; and a theatre I knew little about.

"Tamanville" by "Keith". An unusual choice of Stuka model; and a good counter point to Extreme one's BOB.

"The Shooting Stars"; by Icefire. Again; a plane and a time frame one rarely sees on full real servers; and very well done.

That's my top six; though I could easily mention six more that have made a lasting impression.

As for suggestions; here goes:

Seeing as I like to use campaigns to learn unfamiliar planes; I'm a great beliver in the first couple of missions having a training character. It'd be cool if one could be informed of what trim the type has; what boost system; does it have a gyro sight and how should one use it etc.

I'd like to see progressions to and from sub types in a campaign where suitable. A good campaign should thoroughly ground one in the subject plane; and hopefully the history and the theatre of the setting.

Thanks to ALL the designers!

This is not an easy question to answer. For example I prefer campaigns which are based on dogfights between single-engined fighters but that doesn't mean that the other campaigns aren't necessarily as good in terms of quality. Here are my top 3 rated in terms of my own personal enjoyment:

1. Battle over Britain. 3pts.
2. Leaning forward into France. 2pts.
3. Battle of Ceylon. 1pt.

Please could I ask all users who download campaigns or single missions from Netwings to take a minute or so and leave some feedback for their designers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

First of all, good job on this thread and the one on the favorite aircraft neural_dream.

I am a little disappointed in the number of people who have voted in this thread. Almost twice as many people have voted in the favorite airplane poll in two days as have voted here in close to three weeks. I guess the number of people who play campaigns is a lot smaller than I thought. Even the most popular campaign has only gotten 15 votes.

This thread is definitely reinforcing my decision to quit building campaigns. My last campaign has generated zero responses so far, very disappointing. As a result, I cancelled the sequel even though I have already built 21 missions for it. I will finish the sequel to my Rufe campaign and then hang it up as far as campaign building goes.

Hey Z-C don't give up. You obviously enjoy the challenge of campaign building, and there will always be people who enjoy what you do.
I finished your Rufe campaign and started Straight Down, but got sidetracked by testing Corsarios Catrachos and restarting one of my own efforts.

When I began 'Against Overwhelming Odds' we didn't even have the Komet; just a promise. I had the idea that I wanted to give something back to the community, and as I knew nothing about skinning... Little did I realise that it was going to take me a year in research and mission-building, plus a fair expense on books.
Until it was relisted on FranceSimulation (to highlight Tchaika's skins) I had had absolutely no feedback whatsoever, and this didn't really worry me because it was done and I was pleased with it.

'Hurricats' has had 302 downloads on Flying-Legends, and if we assume the same for AirWarfare only about 600 people were interested in flying the Hurricane in a campaign. Of these, based on my own downloading of campaigns, I'd be surprised if half have actually finished it. There has only been one review - yours, thanks http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif - but I'm not too worried.

I enjoy flying campaigns offline along with many others, but perhaps they are not as many as we'd hoped. So don't be downhearted about the lack of response, there ARE people out there who appreciate your work, even if they don't tell you.

If you really do give up the campaigns, how about building some (more?) coops? We 242Sqn chaps are always on the lookut for new ones, and we're not the only squad who do.

Cheers!

Thanks to all that have voted for my campaigns. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

To have 3 campaigns in the top15 makes me extremely proud.

I'm certain that Poymando would also be really pleased that Battle Over Britain is so popular after all this time.

I still receive the occasional email questioning why the user is flying over The Gulf of Finland http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif (one every 2months on average http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif )

IMHO my Two Little DUCs campaign is far 'better' than the Battle Over Britain campaign because it benefits from all the experience I built up when creating my earlier campaigns. In a way I'm dissapointed that it didn't score higher than the BoB campaign but who am I to judge? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

@ Zeus-Cat - do you really make campaigns purely for other people's enjoyment?

I've always been really grateful for the positive feedback I've received for any of my campaigns, but my motivation for creating them was always about creating a campaign I would like to fly in.
Also the FMB was great fun to use (even though it can't do everything the campaign buider would like it to)

The process of creating something is what tends to drive the artist, not necessarily the 'acclaim' the work generates.

It is a bit strange about the low votes-

I recon that the offline players are the silent majority in this sim. there must be many thousands playing the stock campaigns and buying addons like The last Days and Battle over Europe-I have had nearly 4000 hits for reviews on these two alone on Airwarfare and Tsisqua has had similar results-ok many wont buy but the interest is there.

So that leaves me puzzled in the low interest in campaigns made by the community- the only things that I can think of to stop people trying out these free addons are

1) Poor publicity
2) People unsure of how to install or nervous to install in case messes up main program
3) Lack of time to play due to interest in main campaigns DCG or flying online

This thread should help with 1) and 2) so hopefully we can start getting more to play these.

I hope the builders dont get discouraged- they are a valuable addition to the community and even if you only provide enjoyment for a few it could be just the very plane/scenario they were looking for and so you bring a bit extra enjoyment to them.

Dunkelgrun and Extreme_One,

Thanks for the comments. However, I really do think I am going to hang it up after I release my next campaign. I don't build campaigns solely for other people's enjoyment, but it really helps motivate me when you get a "Thanks for the campaign. That dam-busting mission in your campaign was great. I moved it to my single player folder and played it 10 times so far."

Invariably, we all get stuck on mission #6 of the next campaign, where you have spent 20 hours trying to get the timing right or the AI to do something and its just not working. A little positive motivation really helps at times like that.

Anyway, another big reason is that I finally am getting my basement put back together after a long period of restoration. I can get back to model-building, wood-working and stained glass. Here are several photos of the last project I did. That door is the door to my computer room.

Someone mentioned campaign suggestions.

Well campaign length is my suggestion. Two outstanding campaigns didn't get my top 3 vote only due to their brevity.

I like campaigns to at least break 20 missions. Why? Because a 10 mission campaign is right at the point where I feel truly involved. I need that extra 10 or 20 missions to enjoy the campaign "accomplishments" to the fullest.

hfs,

You are clearly the exception to the rule. Your photo essays are inspired and greatly appreciated. Good luck at school btw. What are you studying?

I assumed some of the more "popular" authors would have heard from people, but apparently that isn't the case. However, I still will be cutting back on my campaign work. I simply have a lot of other things to spend my time on and I really want to work on these things.

1) I have to make a stained glass piece for a friend who is getting married in June. I just bought a new $200 Glass grinder so I can back into action.

2) I would also like to make another stained glass door. The one above took 300 hours; 200 hours for the glass and 100 for the door - all of it custom made by me. Regrettably, I dropped the glass a week after I finished it. I was test fitting it in the door. I had to replace about 20% of it.

3) I have two wooden ship models I need to finish. One is 95% complete and the other is about 40% finished. Hundreds of hours here.

4) I have more plastic models to work on than I can count. 1/35th scale armor

5) Various word-working projects.

6) Fly other people's campaigns!

Hey Z-cat....ive dnloaded all your projects but only had time to fly straight shot, right after it was released. the time thing you know. ive gotten to where i try to promote a project i really like, but i didnt think of that at the time. It appears a bit of promotion helps the circulation and responses.

Ive gotten a fair amount of response on here and a few emails from VVS fighters pt1, and am still working on part 2, but i mainly do this for my own enjoyment, as I enjoy trying to recreate history.....sort of like a poor mans time machine. Also, we didnt hve this kinda thing when i was a kid.

I think a fair amount of folks have liked your projects. Youre right though, positive response helps motivate me, as this is the reason im still working on pt2.

Funny that misn 6 would be mentioned as a stalling point....thats the one thats holding me up right now;timeing thing. thanx for your excellent work though, as i WILL fly all your projects at some point.

Let me clarify my remarks as I don't want to be misunderstood. Positive feedback is nice, but I am also looking for constructive criticism.

After I released "Straight Shot" I started a thread somewhere and asked (came close to demanded) some feedback. I can't quite remember who responded, it may even have been you, or maybe it was bird_brain, but it was someone who is well-respected is the community. Anyway, whoever it was pointed out a few things they didn't like about how I made the "Straight Shot" campaign. It was a little hard getting called out in publice, but the criticisms were valid and I made my next campaign, "Straight Down", incorporating the suggested comments. I also am incorporating the suggestions into the sequel to "Straight Shot".

The changes were simple, but I think they enhanced the fun factor of the campaign considerably. For instance, one comment was that my landing recon circle was too small. The player had to get right up next to the ship with his seaplane to get credit for a landing. A second comment was that the primary goal should be something like a recon waypoint at the target, not a safe landing recon waypoint. This is stuff I didn't think about when I made the campaign, but in hindsight, they are things I probably should have thought about. If no one took the time to point them out, I would keep making the same "mistake".

In summary, keep the comments coming whether they are good or bad.

At least you didn't have the ship moving!!

I like RAF 46 Sqn
I like Cactus Diary
I like VMF 214
I like the Spanish Civil War
I like 361 FG
I like the goofy one where you're Italian fighting Greeks and landing on these unlikely mountain strips all the time.

You get my drift--I like just about all the campaigns and am grateful to the people who create them. Scanning this thread, seeing a few campaign builders disappointed in the response to it, here's me tipping my hat. I don't have the time to commit to on line play--all I get is an odd minute here and there to fly a mission in the twenty campaigns or so I've got going. So if you campaign builders want some attaboys, here's a bunch from me. Maybe my sort of player is a silent majority--or minority--but I couldn't let this opportunity pass and be silent with my praise.

And I believe Extreme One is correct--people who create, for the most part, don't do it for the feedback, IMHO. They get an idea for something, they want to see it in front of them, and since nobody else is making it, they make it themselves.

Cheers,

I haven't played too many, but my favorites are El Alamein and The Spanish Civil War.

By the way, are there any good f-8 campaigns on that list?

Well, after reading this thread through I felt the need to make one of my very occasional posts to a community that I have enjoyed immensley. Thanks to all the people involved over the years. [even rayban jockey]

As I play offline the campaigns are of imense value to me and will be for ages to come as I have downloaded so many to play as and when I get time which should take years.

The best?
There all good but Experten was and is the one for me plus any of the other Luftwaffe campaigns.

So, the main reason for this post is to thank all the unsung heroes who have made all these campaigns for me to enjoy, contrary to Zues-cats earlier posts they are very much appreciated by the vast number of the silent majority, us lurkers do enjoy your hard labours.

And I hope the people far clever than me keep making them for as long as the incredible sim keeps going I will keep flying them.

Salute

pilotpimpf,

You are exactly the kind of person Dubbo and I would love to hear from. We don't expect you to write a book on how well you liked or hated our work, but a few sentences would be nice (a little more would be even better).

Let me say this one last time as I don't think people believe me, for the last campaign I released a few months ago, I have heard ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from any user. Airwarfare.com no longer lists the number of downloads a campaign gets, so I don't know if zero people are playing a campaign or 10,000. I don't know whether it is enjoyable or a waste of time, good or bad, easy or hard, etc.

Once in a while people say thank you to campaign builders in general, but that really isn't the same as getting some direct feedback from a user.

I'm going to stop talking about this as it sounds like I'm whining.

Zeus,

Via this Link to airwarfare statistics (http://airwarfare.com/webstats/awstats.pl?urlfilter=.zip&urlfilterex=&output=urldetail&config=airwarfare.com&lang=EN) you can filter on yer campaign name and check it's downloads, and select a time frame.

(BTW, Just today I busted that dam in Straight and True ... fun!)

Bump!

And a comment: I'm kindly (and slightly) surprised to have gotten some points and comments from RAF 46 and Battle of Ceylon, as I did not really advertise them properly. I'm also glad to have gotten some Honorary Mentions to 'Corsarios Catrachos'

I have the He-111 campaign installed on my machine. I can zip it and send it you Philiscdrw. email me at zeuscat@sbcglobal.net if you want it.

Since it appears that neural_dream has made good on his word that he was leaving the forum, I'll update the vote results later tonight for him.

ok, dumb question....the airwarfare statistics page.....how do you translate That? I mean, i dont really understand the terminology used there, and am curious as to how you get the number of actual dnloads off that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I dont think 64000+ guys have dnloaded my cmpn.....at least i dont think so. The feedback would be really lousy if that was so. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

And i was hoping Dubbo would see this....i told ya that your creation was exceptional. Watch out for those lousy sharks off that beach....or mines from WW2 floating around.

I guess that's the final tally then...

I'm happy to tie for 3rd & have all of mine on the list somewhere. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Dubbo, I think you should definately finish your sequal since you came in 2nd out of all that excellent material! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I think you 2 should settle this in a fight between your P-40B and F4F (that would be interesting). http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

for what its worth, i enjoyed them about the same....Guadacanal is a particular fascination of mine though, so.....

Not all campaigns are on this server, some are hosted ob magnumpc's server. I am looking into providing live stats for all downloads.

Euro_Snoopy,

First of all, thanks for the work you put into hosting this website. You are anothe of the unsung heroes of this community and deserve a nice thank-you from all of us.

What exactly do the following terms mean on the link you gave us?

Viewed
Entry
Exit

EURO_Snoopy
01-29-2006, 10:03 AM
Cheers Zeus_Cat but thanks are really due to guys like yourself who spend countless hours slaving over minute details to perfect their latest creation. You make the game and airwarfare.

Viewed = the number of times download link was clicked, that's the bit you're interested in http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Entry means the site was entered via an external link and not from a page on airwarfare

Exit means left the site after downloading the file

Differences between entry, exit and viewed mean that other pages were visited prior to or after downloading the file.

but what about compatibility?

is for example 4.01 working ok on 4.05? I know that I was trying to play for example cactus diary on 4.05 but it was broken...

Enforcer572005
08-28-2006, 10:13 PM
Cactus Dairy for FB/AEP/PF combined should work in 4.05. YOu need to check the readme file to know when a cmpn was made and what it's compatible with. If a cmpn is made in 4.04, it should work in 4.05. If it is made in 4.05 and includes objects that werent in 4.04, then it wont work in 4.04. CD should work in 4.05 because it was made before it, and everything in it should be in 4.05 already. cmpns are forward compatible, but not always backward compatible.

Now if you are trying to fly the version made for IL-2 FB combined with AEP, and PF(check and see if you are in the readme-I cant remember how it was titled differently), it wont function in pacific fighters stand alone because it uses stuff from FB. There should be a version for each one, since Bird Brain made a PF version, last I heard. Are you flying FB combinded or just PF?

if youre flying the FB version in 4.05, (the pacific fighters version would be called 4.05M I think-confusing I know) it should work fine. You may wanna see if u installed it correctly. What exactly is it saying when you try to fly it? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

If all else fails, find a post by Bird Brain on here (in the misn builder forum alot) and send him a PM. He will be glad to assist you. He is the Guru of the cmpn blders. Cactus works very well and is excellent.
