I thought this was worth passing along. Japanese film makers are making a movie based off of the Yamato battleship. Scheduled DVD release in Japan is August 2006 in Japan.

Trailer: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-nHB_1ua3z8&search=yamato

(Perhaps our Japanese friends can fill us in on details, please?) official site: http://www.yamato-movie.jp/

There's actually a 1/10th (as in one-tenth) scale model of the Yamato in Kure, Japan. It has an excruciatingly obsessive level of detail built into it. Amazing to see...

Dunno about this movie, though. I hope it's not one of those "great ideas squandered by poor execution" types. As for the Yamato herself, well, she never really accomplished anything militarily. She was built, she floated around Borneo most of her career, then she was sunk. So the picture might be more of an opera of the personalities on board the ship than about the ship itself.

Still, I'd like to see it. Hope it becomes availble in the States.

Anyone know if it will be released with English subtitles? Looks like a fun movie, if just to see how the Japanese filmmakers handle the demise of the Yamato.

Film was released in Japan back in December. I've been waiting for the DVD since then.

Two caveats about ordering from Amazon Japan: (1) if you do not have a universal region DVD player, you probably will not be able to watch the DVD (unless they made it in the universal play mode), and (2) this version may not have subtitles in your language while export versions will have them. Yes, but without Ben Affleck, immediately making it a better film.

Thanks, RSS_hidekichi---I was amazed by that scene of the entire crew mustered on the bow to listen to the speech by the admiral or captain. Very moving. Very much want to see the film.

I went to the site that Leitmotiv linked... if I am reading it right it would not be playable on my DVD player here in the US. Is that correct?

The trailer really has me hooked.

Looks like a good movie. I do hope they release it with English subtitles.

Wish I could answer your question, sledgehammer2. Maybe send them an email (let me know what they say!). I have a universal DVD player, but I want to be sure I get a copy with English subtitles. I ordered an excellent film from Amazon Germany and, for once, it didn't have English subtitles. Once burned twice shy! I am going to wait for a genuine U.S. version to be sure all my tickets are punched.

I have not watched the movie yet. From what I gathered watching the trailer.... The old guy is a surviver of Yamato, and the young woman a step daughter of another survivier(?). They take his small fishing boat to the location where Yamato was sunk(?) Another guy with bandage over his eye was injured off Leyte (<-- spell?), was hospitalizerd, but escape the hospital to join the final battle of Yamato (and die?) The homepage of the movie shows the catch phrase, "I will protect her (by participating in the final battle of Yamato), even though I will not be able to see her again." I guess that was the common sentiment of those Japanese soldiers who were led to the battlefields to die in the final year of the Pacific War.

It seems that they created a scale 1 model of a large segment of Yamato to shoot the movie, at the cost of (guess!).... $60k (too cheap?). Some of the actors are highly respected ones, although the cast seems to include a professional baseball player etc. (Ben and Jen don't appear in the movie, but.... )
