Hi,

according to WIKIPEDIA the description of a XO is: "The XO is typically responsible for the management of day-to-day activities, such as maintenance and logistics, freeing the unit commander to concentrate on tactical planning and execution."

MY QUESTION NOW: Does the XO also participate in tactical operations or is he responsible only for planning?

Executive Officer:
The XO is basically the "Right Hand" of the CO. The XO shares the responsibility for all under the command as well. The XO position is one of a support role. The XO aide and guide the CO in matters that are difficult or not easily solved. The XO is also the main link between the CO and the rest of the command. The XO holds all the powers of a CO, should that CO not be present, therefore, requiring similar attributes in judgement, relations, delegation, and leadership. The XO will also provide as well as receive the same respect as a CO.
The XO may also perform a trial in an emergency situation should the CO be gone for an extended period of time. The XO can also perform trials should a superior officer order one for a pilot as well.

Carry On!

The XO definitely participates in tactical operations. For example in a Navy flying squadron, the XO would be an experienced pilot. Normally someone is placed in the XO position because they've demonstrated leadership potential. If they do well in their tour as an XO, they'll probably move on to become a squadron commander.
