Russians get new planes and kick our asses.

Very interesting Kursk/Smolensk/Stalingrad/Kuban maps.

We get to shoot some LL Spitfires.

We get to fly the FW190.

I am with carguy 100% on that. 42-43 is the most interesting

I don't just mean in the game, but in general. Let's say the next IL2 series was set in this period. What would you like?

Is it because of a particular theater?

Is it because of a particular balance of Air superiority?

Is it because of a particular aircraft or plane set?

For Me I'm torn between BoB and Mid war. This was when the matter was really in question and offers the most rewarding plane set and balance.

Well all of them. The Mediterranean theatre's got so much scope. Thing is, I love the E4 more than the K4, but I love the MkIX more than the MkI, know what I mean?

middle war as most air battles are able to go either way, as most aircraft are roughly comparable in the 42-43 era. But also, in terms of the theatres, you have the Mediterranean, you have the Eastern Front with it's massive scale and aggressiveness, and the Pacific in this period was hard fought with new US and Commonwealth aircraft being introduced and the Japanese with still a large number of their best pilots fighting it out.

42-43 was the pinnacle of the war for me, in terms of exciting air warfare in the sense of the aircraft involved, the scenarios, and skill level of the pilots.

32 to 39 which would be china and the spanish civil war .. that would be fascinating if we had the planes and maps

i like biplanes its why i always wanted a malta map http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

overall early to mid war is more challenging and more fun

I also play Flames of War .. 15mm WWII minature wargamimg and even there the late war stuff gets a bit droll .. all Ferdinands, Tigers and KV's.

Overall early to mid war is more interesting to me.

I voted BoF/B ..
but like middle as much, and lately I really like 'end game' a lot. If a Korea add pops up before the next BoB I'll buy it too.

So much fun to fly the P38J against fw190s, watching them struggle to turn that thing until the grim realization sets in that they aren't RTBing today.

I love to fly in the the 42-43 period, but Korea comes in second by only a bit. Who doesn't love to see MG-only jets fighting against prop-planes?

It still fires a bullet, so I classify it as a MG. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

Anything that has a Ki-43 in it. I can't wait to try the Ki-27. It may be my new favorite ride. And before you call me crazy, I shot up two well flown F4U-1Ds the other night, one badly enough I got credit for a kill when he landed, and I landed safely. I dearly LOVE that plane!

'42-'43 for Med, Ost, ETO. '43-'44 for PTO.

Mid War (42-43) is my favorite, what with F4Fs and P-40s vs A6M2s, the end of the TBD's career and the beginning of the TBF's, and Spits and P47s mixing it up with Bf-109Gs and Fw-190As. Plus, at this time, the Axis and Allied air forces were more or less balanced in technology and numbers. By the end of 1943, both were starting to swing decidely in the Allies favor (Me-262 notwithstanding).

Early War (1940-1941) would be my second favorite, since you still saw substantial use of alot of the neat pre-war planes, such as the P-34, P-36, Bf-109E, Ki-30, Ki-27, A5M, I-153, etc.

I'd say 1941-1943. Early pacific action, and the height of the desert action - 3 Sqn RAAF anyone? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif P-40's galore. On the other hand, even though we don't have it ingame, I'd like Morotai and Borneo, Balikpapan, places to use my shiny Beaufighter http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I voted 42-43... but overall any of the Early years of the war from 39-43... Hurricane, Mig and Bi-planes.
And I can't leave out the bombers which fit into the early war years... A-20, Ju-88, B-25 and Betty which are a total Blast for either Ground Pounding or Anti-Shipping.

Second place would go to the late war 45... which is not bad because of the variety of aircraft avalible on either front of the war.

it depends on my mood at the time! I'm quite partial at the minute to 43 pacific, 43 eastern front and 45 western front (Tempest!). I'll fly anyone 190 type whatever the year though and I like flying the P38J against anything in '43. Early P39's are also fun to fly in a 42/43 setting.

It depends..'42 when flying for axis, '44 for alies (of course on condition that those Me262 are banned, fortunately met most time) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

40 - 41 covers it for me...
1940 Battle of France/Battle of Britain & 1941 Early Barbarossa/Leaning Forward into France are my favorite periods...
1942 - Russia/Med & the early Pacific encounters are a close second...but as it gets later and later my interest begins to decline....
Though when BoB gets round to it (if it gets round to it...) 1944 Proper Night Fighter encounters over Berlin...Ju88's/Me110's & Do217's against Lancasters & Halifaxes in bad weather...with primitive radar will be fantastic!

Its funny you know because that rarely ever seems to be the case when I meet a P38, its the other guy who wont be RTB'ing http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

On topic I chose 42/43. The sweeet Fw 190 A4 becomes available and even though it is the slow derated sub 400mph model I still love her to bits - even against the dreaded La-5.

Early to middel war for me. I'm very much a turn&burn-flyer. I know proper pilots boom&zoom, but I can't seem to put my heart into it.

The outcome of the war is still in doubt...the AC can perform w/o "uberness"

42-43 for sure. The introduction of the Antons, 109-Gx, La5 etc,...

The competitive edge was a toss up and the air of desperation was high and the potential outcome was still unknown.

Funny thing though, most actual posters vote 42-43 while the voters are heavily voting for 40-41...hmmm. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

I'm also a mid war fan and voted the 42-43 as most who've posted. But look at the results and you see a different picture. The BoB period is very similar to the mid-war. I'd also love to see a KTO game or add-on.

Definitely a great period.

I also like 1944 Pacific with Corsairs/Spitfires/Beaufighters Vs Ki84's, Ki61's and Zeros.

Battle Of Britain would be great if we had a Spitfire Mk 1 and II to balance the Hurricanes shortcomings vs the 109E.

You just haven't met the smart P38 jocks yet.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I probably like that matchup because it's so dependant on pilot skill. I met some Russian chap in a 190 on a Russian server awhile back and it was one of the best 1 v 1's I've had in a long time. Felt like it went on for 10 minutes and in the end he augered in due to the snap shots I put into him.

Good original post, 1943 is where it's at. I just wish the Razorback Jug had a usable gunsite.

Neither can I. I guess I'm just not patient enough to get up to 20 something-thousand feet, even though I fly planes that are most at home up there.

Though I voted for the Early Years, I really like the whole deal. Planes in all the periods noted are exiting, and planes in each period have something to offer that the planes in other periods don't.

However, I have a soft spot for the early birds and pre-war types. They were simply a blast to fly and look at. I would especially love to fly the Bf-109s with the British engines in them - Kestrals, I believe - and see how they handled with less than 700 horsepower up front!

History is such a facinating thing! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Definitely 42-43...what I wouldn't do for a fully rated FW190A-4 in 1942.

It's a shame that the P-38 and P-47 are not really represented in this sim for the 42-43 years - we really only have at best early 1944 variants of those.
